Apple dumps Intel and shows Final Cut Pro on new Mac with Apple CPU !

...I've come to the conclusion it's expensive insurance for a very unlikely event.

I truly felt this way until last year when I was on three editing deadlines at once and our cat, who was sleeping on his bed on top of a file cabinet next to my editing desk, fell off the cabinet, bed and all, in the middle of the night. He fell onto my 2017 iMac, which plummeted to the floor, shattering the screen into hundreds of pieces.
Totally a freak accident, had never happened, he was okay but I had to immediately go buy a 2020 iMac the next day to keep on deadlines. Due to the Pandemic, it took the local Apple Store a month to source the replacement screen, I had a few weeks of Apple Care left so it only cost me $99.00 for the new screen. Editing and live streaming computers to me now are just like cameras, you always have to have a spare, ready to jump in at a moment's notice. I have a MBP but it's a 2011, ancient, no way I could edit 4K on it.

I was thinking of my situation where I have a few weeks to turn around a project. I didn't mean to say a backup isn't important. I just wouldn't spend $5,000+ on an iMac Pro, a second low end iMac for $600 sounds more prudent. Wow that was some crazy cat story.

And people wonder why I have dogs instead... ; ) Yeah, they have to go outside a few times a day, but they don't crawl on top of tables, desks and cabinets and I always know when Amazon, UPS and FedEx are here. Lol.

A $3k top iMac and a $150 TB3 hub adds more Tb3 ports and still easily saves $2k. The extra bandwidth will be missed by some but unless one was adding a few eGPUs and super fast storage arrays it likely is not a loss for many. For those that need that level of bandwidth the Mac Pro is a much better choice now.

Well, I paid $3300 (open box at Microcenter... who from nearly day one sold the base model new for $3999) for my iMac Pro in 2018. A comparable (even today) iMac spec'd with the 10-core processor, 5700XT, 10Gb Ethernet, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD is $4599. The iMac is also going to be louder because it's not as well-cooled as the iMac Pro.

A comparably-spec'd Mac Pro (add the W5700X GPU and 1TB SSD) is $6999 before you buy a screen.

Neither of those is a complete winner over an iMac Pro for someone who needs more than two Thunderbolt ports. I run two SSD storage arrays, a PCIe bridge box to drive my SAS LTO drive, a second LG Ultrafine 5K display and a Tb3 dock to get some extra ports (second NIC, Firewire, a lot more USB-A).

Can I do all that with an iMac and a Thunderbolt hub? Probably.... but it'd cost me a good chunk of cash for essentially a lateral move.

...Wow that was some crazy cat story.

I felt bad for him, he is such a GREAT cat, pretty much the personality of a dog Run & Gun, he's 100% opposite of any cat I've ever seen. He wants to be with me 24/7, licks me to death and has an incredible personality, he's an entertainer and people pleaser.
He could 100% be one of those companion animals they bring to visit hospital patients and old people. I've been a dog person all my life but growing up on a ranch, we always had cats to kills rats and mice and I love
cats as much as dogs, they are both better than we humans deserve.

He didn't set foot back in my office for a month, it freaked him out. He was asleep and next thing he wakes up falling through the air onto a big computer that goes crashing to the ground. Poor guy.

I read this as he has the personality of run&gun as a dog. Not "of a dog, run&gun." Then started imagining run&gun as a dog in a cat's body. I must be tired.

This story is why I'm so afraid of potential gravitational energy. I have a phobia of things falling over or falling onto other things. We're all just one flying cat away from destitution.

CatDog - not nickelodeon's greatest cartoon. Still put in some serious hours.

There is little reason to pay for the 10 core CPU on the iMac. Plus I wouldn't pay for the ram and SSD upgrades from Apple either. This brings the cost down a lot. While the iMac Pro may have come standard wit that it doesn't mean every user needs Apple to provide that out of the box. Most video editors use some kind of external storage for projects and don't use the internal storage for actual work.

I'm also not 100% its tru the iMac is louder. The iMac Pro may have had better cooling but it asl used older generation components. The 5700 XT produces a lot more output with less power usage than the Vega cards did. While there may be some noise difference I'm not sure its a big enough factor to keep it around.

I agree the Mac Pro costs a lot more but I think the point is if one finds 8 cores and 5700 XT to be enough for what they do there is the iMac as a perfect solution. If one needs a lot more processing power they were likely going for the 18 core which did cost a bit more. Jumping from a 8 core iMac to a 10 or 14 core iMac Pro may not be a significant enough gain to make it worth it. The iMac with 8 cores, 5700 XT and 10gbe plus 128 GB of after market Ram is $3530. That 128 GB is a lot more than the 32 GB of the standard amount with the iMac Pro. You could upgrade to the 10 core but it really isn't worth it for the cost. Adds very little.

Initially only the good discrete video cards were reserved for the iMac Pro. But once Apple decided to replace the Pro line with the MX1 they let it languish and instead updated the regular iMac with 5000 graphics card as the bridge. This reduced the performance difference in the short term but after they upgrade the Pro line with the M1X, the performance gap will be restored.

Back when I was thinking of getting their latest standard iMac, the reviews recommended not to pay for the higher performance cpus because they generated more heat causing the mac to throttle, resulting in no performance benefit. This thermal throttling issue commonly seen in laptops. This limitation was probably one of the main reasons Apple decided to transition to the M1.

Hahahahahaha...

Well, I am pretty loyal and and I usually won't turn down a belly rub, either.

I grew-up with an Irish Terrier and two cat's. And I currently have four dogs. Sometimes I think I'm just working to pay for dog food and meds. Flea and heart worm prevention every month for four dogs is not cheap... Thank goodness Amazon delivers the dog food right to my house, now.

I haven't followed Apple's plans and I don't know the context of their prediction (I do watch that channel from time to time), but if a M1X Mini comes out soon then everyone's lost their mind.

You just cannot buy anything anymore without having something better ASAP right around the corner.

There is also a new M Mac Pro

That's all good...only the 1% are buying computers over $5K, $6K these days (or those not using their own money).

I guess it also depends on what sooner means. A fall 2021 announcement with late fall/early winter shipping would be a year.

That was my thought exactly, having just bought a 16GB M1 mac mini. But the M1X version will surely be at least a few hundred bucks more, so there's that.

But the main thing is - I needed an Apple backup machine NOW. (Actually, it's probably long overdue.) So, I'll have no buyer's remorse if an M1X version comes out soon.

And I think that's the way to go - don't buy anything if you can afford to wait

I thought you personally primarily bought it as a back-up in case anything would go wrong and you had a major deadline?

Nevertheless how is it?
