Apple dumps Intel and shows Final Cut Pro on new Mac with Apple CPU !

Independent benchmarks are the only way. Actually, I get the excitement, but I'm surprised multiple people here are pre-ordering. Apple is generally good about availability, and I can't imagine a months long wait on these units if one waits to order a couple weeks. Personally I'd be waiting until independent sites run them through the ringer... it's a 2 year transition for a reason.

I am also not convinced that Apple will not surpass AMD, though. I'll believe it when I see it, but Apple has the bankroll to do it, and they've been at this for years on the mobile end now. We know Apple keeps secrets. They could be 3-5 years deep on R&D on a full power desktop chip and we all know AMD has been the underdog and Intel has been resting on its laurels. There's a lot of profit margin to be had here for Apple. If they have the best performing CPU on the market, it's not only a strong selling point. It means the best of PC hardware becomes exclusive to Apple, and they can take their pick between thick margins and/or driving down the price to essentially obsolete other system integrators.

I'm also not suggesting this all good news. One company who owns the CPU, the hardware design, and the software is good for the product and bad for competition. All speculation, of course, but I would not be at all surprised to see an Apple engineered desktop and high end mobile chip that neither AMD nor Intel could match. They have the money, the engineers, and the supply chain to make it happen, and it's not as if Intel set the bar terribly high for the past several years.

The next decade in CPU performance leaps and competition may look like 2000-2010 all over again.

It seems M1 graphics are as fast Radeon Pro 560X and few times faster than Intel integrated graphics

Intel UHD Graphics 630 (Mac Mini 2018): 3.150 GPixel/s, 25.20 GTexel/s, FP32 403.2 GFLOPS

M1 Mac Mini 2020: 41 GPixel/s, 82 GTexel/s, FP32 2.6 TFLOPS

A12Z FP32 1.1 TFLOPS
Radeon Pro 560X 2.056 TFLOPS
Radeon Pro 5300M 3.2 TFLOPS
Radeon Pro 5300 4.2 TFLOPS
Radeon Pro 580X 5.530 TFLOPS

I seen that posted on a Mac forum.

If it's not hyperbole, then it would be a first for Apple. :)

Apple did say that they can't vouch for the third party developers. And on Apple-working-Apple, they have no competition. So, real tests will come from people running different programs on different chips and different operating systems. And the tests will come out differently from month to month because someone will release an update. Or two.

It is fantastic news because it breaks up the Wintel domination of the consumer and, aside of some industries, the lower end pro markets. Intel still carries a big stick in servers but that's the big money corporate investment. And even that is under threat from the ARM based manufacturers like Amazon, Marvell, NVIDIA, Ampere, etc. And this is far better than the status quo.

Probably great news for those who need a relatively powerful computer with great battery life.

I have used Mac OS for decades ... and am nursing an 11 year old MacPro along ... hope they scale the M1 to
a point that it will suffice for the next decade.

But honestly the presentation seemed like hosting a group of Moonies from the airport over for lunch. Are there really only 10 people at Apple Mothership? My eyes glazed over and I thought... a hive of those mini’s and Resolve would fly ... woke up from the dream to the drone of my aging space heater Radeon VII churning through electrons faster than the M1 graphics flying around the Mothership ... good thing Texas has its own grid.

Looking forward to a mid range MacPro ... should they ever decide to address the middle ground ... never knew there are so many immersive spaces that are compelling ... no need for bread and circuses

Rant over

Really good news for many

Independent benchmarks are the only way.

Geekbench has some. Here is the interpretation by Mac Rumors:

Apple Silicon M1 Chip in MacBook Air Outperforms High-End 16-Inch MacBook Pro

"In comparison to Macs, the single-core performance is better than any other available Mac, and the multi-core performance beats out all of the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro models, including the 10th-generation high-end 2.4GHz Intel Core i9 model. That high-end 16-inch MacBook Pro earned a single-core score of 1096 and a multi-core score of 6870." --- https://www.macrumors.com/2020/11/11/m1-macbook-air-first-benchmark/

This is just the new Macbook Air, which has no fan.

Hot dog! ...I was so close to dropping $5K on a new 16" a few months ago.

The 16" will still be better for certain tasks, but the days of overpriced computers (which aren't as bad as cameras) are now over too.

[This really is able to happen only in the current state with a monopoly controlling the future and in our favor. That could change though.]

you and me both! pretty crazy stats!

This may push me into using FCPX as well. (well, I was actually about to get an EGPU)

And the even better news is this is a generic benchmark. These new Macs should have stellar performance Most developers write their code in a high level languages and hope for the best when it comes to performance.

Apple on the other has the money to hand code computationally expensive code to leverage the GPU or GPU while also providing specialized Metal instructions that give even better performance in FCPX.

They did show an Mac with an A12Z playing back 3 streams of 4K ProRes at the Keynote. It will be crazy if the new M1 MacBook Air actually outperforms the 16" MacBook Pro in FCPX!

It's so remarkable.

We are witnessing one of the greatest technological transitions in history.

Half-ass computers being made with subpar hardware costing questionable sums have vanished overnight.

___

The base price of the MBA is $999. This is unprecedented if performance is as expected.

If this thing cuts through R5's H.265, I'll lose it. (Because the iPad does and a $15K Mac Pro doesn't.)

Too bad the first three releases are probably the least desirable machines for heavy use and professional editors.
I look forward to an iMac Pro with this new architecture. I won't be getting a Mac Pro as I don't edit enough for clients to justify the cost.

Don't be a geezer, lol...professional editors are now called "content creators" whom are in their early 20s who have like 20 different technical jobs (production, photos, websites, coding, social media).

Highly desirable laptops. Even the Mini will replace many systems.

Apple always knows what it is doing.

The bigger machines will come later after they evaluate where the world's at.

Yeah and apparently the M1 has hardware decode and encode for 10-bit HEVC. This could be the killer system for working with a range of cameras including 6K S1H footage.

I think the most remarkable thing about this is the Apple wants to sell $3000 systems. They must have some amazing stuff planned for next year's systems including new applications that can leverage all of this power!

Yeah, yeah, I know. But 13"? None of the content creators I know get excited about working on a 13" screen, they all want the 16". I might even be prodded to replace my 2011 MBP once the 16" debuts ;-) I figure a decade is long enough to use a laptop.

I'd definitely buy the 16" MBA if they made one!

If we're talking screen sizes...totally.

Just not into the archaic ideology that all professionals need to sit next to a refrigerator to work.

They still make you pay over $2,000 for any amount of pro specs. The base MBP 13” has a 256GB storage!!! Can you imagine that in 2021 for a Multimedia content creator‘s laptop?
