Apple acquires Silicon Color

"Announcement: We are pleased to announce that all Silicon Color technology and intellectual property, including FinalTouch color correction software, was recently sold to Apple."

Interesting. Shake discontinued, Silicon Color acquired, I have the feeling there's some wonderful upgrades on the horizon for Final Cut Studio.

Yeah, Finul cut will be releasing a high end version aimed at the top end of the market I think. They may price the software in the double digits positioned with the likes of avid etc.

I think that would be good news. After all Apple did to the NLE market what Red will do to the camera market.

NAB 2007 is going to be a very big deal. I expect Final Cut Pro 6.0 and shake 5 around that time. A super high-end Final Cut Extreme sounds great and everything, but considering that 4.5K will soon be in the hands of those without $10,000 for extremely high-end software, I would not be surprised if we see integrated 4K+ REDCODE support in the next FCP version.

For all we know, RED could be chatting with Apple right now. A boy can dream, right?

Final Touch (or an Apple variant of) will likely be rolled into either Final Cut Studio 2 (or whatever replaces it) or the new high-end Modelling/Animation/Compositing package that's probably replacing Shake. Don't expect packages that are way out of reach finacially though, that's not Apple's way. I think we could be in for a treat come NAB...

No, no, Shake is discontinued as said by Apple. It will be replaced by something new. So if I may dream: FC Studio with a Motion/Shake hybrid and FinalTouch build into FCP, ready for 4k with Redcode support running happily on an 8 core MacPro. And don't forget that 4k display.

Actually I think Steve Jobs is the person to love the Red camera. I would be surprised if they were NOT thinking at Apple how to let Red work with FCP.

The least you can count on is that something like FinalTouch 2K will be affordable for a lot more people soon.

Wow, when did Apple announce shake's discontinuation?

With regards to Apple/RED interaction, I suspect that there are already discussions that we'll never be aware of.

From Wikipedia:

"At the same time, Apple also announced that they would end support for Shake, as they begin work on the next-generation software, rumoured to be known as codename Phenomenon"

Maybe not discontinued as you can still buy it, but no support anymore. That's why they lowered the price to $499

Looking at FinalTouch for the first time and looks nice. If apple manages to put that into FCP for a good price then that's really good news.

My guess is Shake and Motion will combine to form Phenomenon.
Interesting news regarding Final Touch. Looks like we'll need to save for more than just a Red camera and Lens :-)

That would be a big price cut because its currently approx $25K for the 2K license.
Its all speculation for the time being, apple is very secretive. They bought up company called Silicon Grail a few years ago that had a film compositor called "Chalice", they had already bought "nothing real" who made a similar package called "shake". The products from "Silicon Grail" were never seen again.:(

If Apple are developing their own DI solution then it could be the end of FT. But I really doubt that would happen the product is too good and there are too many users.

Well thats allways been the case. Highend means $$$$$

Well, what about RED? I wouldn't say it's cheap but certainly a lot cheaper than the competition.

Avid used to be $$$ and they lost a lot of market share to FCP. And Adobe had to come up with Premier Pro to at least compete a little.

Apple is not the company to sell $25k software. My bet is below $3k.

Which makes me wonder.

How many copies of FCP do you suppose Apple sold?

Some times selling things cheaper, you'll sell more units and make more money than selling at a higher price. So maybe this is what Apple is going to do. Let's hope so.

I´ll bet something like 1999.- for some Final Shake Pro -ish something.
And Steve saying "and its available now" in January at the whats it called?

Jochen

Nobody knows what the price will be, we don't even know the nature of the software.

I can assure you that it will NOT be released at MacWorld in January. Pro hardware/software gets saved for the pro events, consumer stuff gets saved for the consumer events. The new software will likely show up at NAB in the same way that Aperture showed up around Photokina and iStuff shows up at consumer-oriented events.

They claim 500,000 registered copies of Final Cut. Presumably including educational, Final Cut Express, etc.

Still, even 100,000 * $1,000 = $100 million (spread over several years)
I have no idea what their margin is. Also, you could include the cost of the Apple hardware as part of the margin (or not).

2- Integration between Final Cut Pro and Final Touch should be a lot sweeter.
XML = ugh.

Hopefully FT will also pickup Motion's plug-in architecture.

Final Cut Extreme which will be tied into next generation Apple Hardware and Leopard. This could be exciting but guaranteed to be more expensive than we're used to. Question is, will there be a non-extreme version?

Steve
