Anyway to monitor audio with headphones on 7D?

Is there any way at all to monitor audio while filming on a 7D via headphones?

I could have sworn the H4N had a headphone jack...

The H4N can monitor audio during recording and playback.

The 7D, by itself, has no headphone jack and cannot be used to monitor audio during recording or playback.

Thanks Barry! That's great news! I was getting worried that there was no way to monitor audio on the 7D!

Now I just gotta find a good deal on a H4N... :)

Oh, just remembered, how do I go about syncing the audio from the H4N with the video from the 7D? I heard about a program called "Plural Eyes"...(I think that's what it was called?) Any ideas?

Thanks again!! Much appreciated!! :)

Plural Eyes can do it, if you're an FCP user. It'll do it a lot better if you can chain the output of the Zoom into the mic input of the 7D.

Hah! Brilliant!:) I never thought of that...I've been shooting with my 5d2/7d and H4n as off-board (2nd system) audio, straight to the SD card, slowing it down .01% in Soundtrack Pro/Audition and THEN plugging it directly into my FCP timeline.

Thanks Barry...I feel like a boob (Never even crossed my mind, mic in, ext out to the 7d)! That's a perfect solution (and helluva way to same some time in post with the Zoom). Does the internal gain control (in 5d/7d) have any negative impact on the SQ routed out from the Zoom? IE, in a quiet passage, will it STILL crank up the sensitivity and hence the noise floor? Or does this somehow bypass the AGC control in the camera?

Thanks again!

I wrote Plural Eyes a month or so back and they told me they were working on a Windows version. Still nothing but w8ing is all there is to do...I couldn't find anything else out there.

Feeding the output from the Zoom into the 7D won't affect the AGC at all. It will still pump it up and drop it down. But it will be soooo much easier to match up the waveforms in post.

On a 5D, if you're running Magic Lantern, I think Magic Lantern can turn off the AGC...

i would go with the h4n patched into my 5d..... but how about a constant dial-able ( high frequency) sound gysmo. ( like only a dog can hear ,as well as the leveler on the gain for the 5d. ) i guess the h4n would show that level as well so you could dial it in close to to reg sound level. ya how about a dog whistle might even do the job. we can call it the -JUST BLOW ME.

A timecode slate is $1200. You don't need a timecode slate! :)

You can get a basic slate for $50, or you can even buy the sticks themselves for $27.

Or, you can go the total no-budget way and just clap your hands at the start of each take.

For something like a DSLR, which is recording a scratch track of audio anyway, you don't truly need a slate; the slate was used in film as a visual reference because film had no audio whatsoever. But when we shot some productions on the GH1, I would just bellow out what the scene and take number were, and then clap to make a "sync mark". You don't even have to have the clapping be shown on-camera, as long as the camera hears it and there's a sharp distinct brief noise, then you can look at the audio waveform and see that spike, and then line it up with the Zoom (or other external audio recorder) audio's waveform spike, and you're good to go.
