Anyone want to cheer me up?

Well, an update on my situation. Things are looking better.

The live sound world is calling me back. Apparently a few people heard about my degree, and the venues I have worked as a live sound engineer. Next week I am doing sound for a 7000 seat venue, sold out. No idea of who is performing. But it's work. Hey, putting that degree to work. And getting paid too.

I ran away from that world a few years ago.....hated closing bars down, and having inebriated fools try to tell me my job. (had a knob on the board specifically for them that I could turn up "Better?").

Chances are, i may have to step out of the film aspect for a bit, to build up a nest egg so I can cherry pick film audio gigs around my schedule. But won't be far away. And still won't let anyone slip anything by me here. DVXUser is my home, and I will protect it.

Doc, life is odd. There will times you hate where you are and other times you're having the time of your life. I can't stand the desert, but I'm here now, almost two freakin' years. Only know a few people. Poor as heck. But the one thing I keep in mind is that what is NOW is not FOREVER.

While something may last a month, half a year, a year, whatever, it's not forever. A whole life is a long journey. Just have to go through the lows and get through them to get back to the highs.

What separates successful people from the rest? On Oprah show she stated there was one common denominator - they never give up, they never give in and they keep pushing forward.

You build from where you are now and keep going. So you're in a bad part of town. I was too from 5-18 lived in the ghetto back in the 70s. My brother still there. Some move on, some don't. Depends if you stop or keep moving.

You'll never be homeless, you know you can say that, now just grit your teeth and move forward.

But is there a time when one should give in and give up? It's a dirty thought in our society, but one I don't think gets examined enough. Now by give up, I don't mean kill yourself, but re-evaluate and push off in an entirely new direction. I'm sure there are also plenty of success stories of individuals who tried something, failed, and became successful at something else. Obviously by my sig line it's something I've been thinking about.

I hope you watched the "Fork Lift Driver" short Doc! It is one of the best german short films ever! :D Don't think it's a normal instruction video!

Great to hear things are looking better Doc! Keep on moving, something good will always come at some point. Life keeps changing.

But is there a time when one should give in and give up? ...

It's is a luxury these days in that if it's your hobby, and you can afford to keep doing it, and if it makes you happy, by all means. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. If it makes YOU happy, that's it. I don't care if my neighbour doesn't like cutting grass so why should I care if he doesn't like my drawings?
In the end, do what you want. It's your life.

//And be willing to accept the responsibilites that go with that. Like I say, if you can.

//To answer the original question. Quite whenever you want. Or take a break and wait for the passion to come back. Sometimes it's just circumstance and burnout. A lot of things. Ony one can answser that question.

Doc, 3 guys walk into a bar....

......
[Taken from the web. Not my words.]

Ok, in one of the schools that I attended in the Navy, I sat next to two guys, one was nicknamed the Doctor, one was called the Reverend and my nickname was the Canadian. So here's the joke that became associated with us.

A doctor, a reverend and a Canadian walk into a bar. They each order a beer and go sit down. Just then, three flies fly into the bar and land on each one of their beers.

The doctor looks disgusted and pushes away his beer. "That's just unsanitary!" and he orders himself a new beer.

The reverend just smiles, "No, that's not for you my little friend." Waving his hand he shoos the fly away and continues to drink his beer.

The Canadian grabs the fly, holds him over his open hand and yells, "Alright, cough it up, eh!"

A Producer, a Director and a DP walk into a bar. The bartender asks, "Whatta have?"...

The Producer says, "Hmmmm.... What do you guys think?..."

The Director says, "A beer... no... a glass of wine. Ok, maybe a shot... Uhh, do you have any wine coolers?.... Hmmm Ok.. a beer. No, a glass of wine....."

The DP says, "Give me an hour..."

Batutta - I do think there are times you need to step away from a project, an idea, a concept or even a dream, HOWEVER when I mean "don't give up" that's to state you keep pushing for something MORE. You don't settle. You don't say to yourself you'll never get anywhere.

I had a friend who is a screenwriter. A few years ago she was really down on herself because she hadn't sold a script. She did have a script coverage business and I told her, look at what you've got RIGHT NOW and make it BIG. Not to tell her to lose her dreaming in selling a script, but to refocus and keep pushing forward. Well she turned her small script coverage service into something huge.

She got so popular that she took Hugh Jackman's overflow. She wrote for the Huffington Post. She held workshops for Warner Brothers. I don't think she ever sold a script but she kept pushing and that is the point. If one dream doesn't come true make something else happen but don't stop.
