ML Support for EOS M

ML Support for EOS M

Just a note - the EOS M is listed as supported by Magic Lantern on the ML main page:

http://www.magiclantern.fm/

Supported Cameras:

5Dc, 5D2, 5D3, 6D, 7D, 40D, 50D, 60D, 500D (T1i), 550D (T2i), 600D (T3i), 650D (T4i), 700D (T5i), 1100D (T3), EOS M, 100D (SL1)

You can download the latest build by camera here:

It also looks like the EOS M and T4i can do a bit of RAW. Although the "pink dots" from the on chip autofocus sensors need to be removed in post. And, of course, DS cards are slower than CF cards. That is available in another location, from the forums.

I also came across this blurb from Roger Cicala on the T4i and EOS M Live View autofocus:

"that when focusing in LiveView it is obviously faster than and just as accurate as any of the other cameras, including the 5DIII and 1Dx."

Cheers!

Im using EOS M with focal reducer/speed booster and it works great, its almost exactly like 550D but sensor supports crop zoom recording so i have 4 setups:
1.Normal EF adapter without glass
2.Normal EF adapter without glass + crop zoom
3.EF adapter with focal reducer
4.EF adapter with focal reducer + crop zoom

VERY happy with it, its almost full frame now, i modified nex speed booster, works perfect even clicks into place.

Unadog, thanks for the info. I've been away from this forum for a while. Have to try the M with Magic Lantern. I've been using my M for about two years now. I have to say, that it is my favorite camera to carry, hands down. While I have better video cameras, and a 5Dmkiii that outperforms it, since the firmware update of about what, a year ago now?, the speed of the autofocus on the M has been totally fine. The image quality is just superb. The camera is tiny and can go anywhere and reminds me a great deal of my old Leica's I grew up on. A viewfinder would be a great addition like the Fuji cameras have. But my only recommendation is to just protect that back glass with a case.

I have no need to upgrade to a "new" M, but would love to see what it offers when it comes. Canon really did no good to this camera by bringing it out before it had it's autofocus right. Hopefully the next one will be right out of the box.

CORRECTION: I just loaded ML last night on the M, and did get clean HDMI out of it, when actually recording. Not the best for live webcasting, as when you are in pause the screens seem to come back, but it does allow clean output on record. A big plus.

I have the EOSM, and I installed Tragic Lantern to get all "I" frames along with a boosted bit rate.

The all "I" frames capability is great, because it eliminates the blocky artifacts that result from inter-frame compression. With Tragic Lantern, the GOP (group of pictures) can be set a "1" so that each frame is its own picture -- it doesn't combine artifacty elements from other frames.

The added bit rate further reduces artifacts.

Here is a recent EOSM test with these settings (and with the Fujian 35mm CCTV lens!).

Unfortunately, it is not practical to enable sound on the EOSM when pushing it to this extent. However, I record audio separately on a Zoom H1 and just slate each take.

I have a couple of EOS-M's and all of the lenses including the lenses not being sold in the states. For those people who already shoot with Canon DSLR's, this camera seems like a no brainer as b-cam. It's stupid cheap in the US. With magic lantern, it is very functional as a video camera. It's light enough and small enough to stick anywhere. All of the native M lenses have the newer IS that is dead silent and allows panning for video. The focus rings are all drive by wire, but this actually makes it easier to adjust focus in small increments. Plus, the zooms are parfocal. And you can always stick your ef lenses on it with an adapter. The video quality and LCD screen are slightly better than my 60D. Throw a small handle and a loupe on the camera and it becomes very easy to handhold.

The problems are the short battery life and the limited features without magic lantern. Also, it is awkward to hold without some sort of grip attached. Still, I love the thing.
