GH3 Anyone used the JuicedLink Riggy-Micro RM222 with a GH3?

Howdy, folks!

Just wondering if anyone has used the JuicedLink Riggy-Micro RM222 with their GH3:

I'm mostly interested in the quality of the audio when recorded directly into the GH3 through the Riggy-Micro, and how it compares to the audio quality of an external recorder (Something like the Tascam DR-40 or Zoom H4n). I record long takes for concerts and other events where I need my audio to sync perfectly with the video, and I'm having trouble keeping the audio in sync with my Tascam over long stretches. I'm thinking the JuicedLink Riggy-Micro might be the answer, but wanted to check with y'all first to see how it sounds & operates.

Any testimonials are greatly appreciated!

I have it. I sold my Tascam DR-40 b/c I was having the same issues with syncing that you had experience. Sold it back to B&H for $100 and used those funds to buy this.
It is EXCELLENT. Real strong and clear audio. I love recording multiple channels and mixing live on the spot. Battery life is also excellent.

Let me know if you have any more specific questions as I use this on a regular basis with my GH3.

That's good to know. Thanks!

Oh, it just occurred to me that I can connect the Line Out minijack from my DR-40 to the Mic input on the GH3. Would that work? It would save me the cost of the JuicedLink, even if I don't get the handy knobs. But that way the audio would be in perfect sync, right?

Yes, that will work, but you are going to have to add a 20 dB pad to bring the LINE level signal from your DR-40 down to a signal level that the GH3 can deal with. Straight LINE level is too strong for the GH3 mic input.

Something like this would probably do the trick: Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N - Line to Microphone Attenuation Cable for HDSLR Cameras : $27
That's a great suggestion! Do we know if that cable works well with the GH3 and the Tascam DR-40? The product description only lists Canon, Nikon & Pentax DSLRs as being compatible. And it says it's for the Zoom H4N, not the Tascam DR-40.

There's also one for the DR-100:

Would that be better suited for the Tascam DR-40?

This cable has been designed and tested for the gear listed, but very likely works just fine with the GH3 too. There's nothing special about the input and output 3.5mm connections, though the amount of audio padding is designed for the Zoom H4n recorder. The GH3 likes a strong audio input signal ( ideally around -20 dB ), so this cable would be a good match.

There's also one for the DR-100

The Tascam DR-40 cable has an additional 10 dB of audio signal padding, which will produce a signal closer to a true MIC level signal from the DR-40 LINE output, but this won't help with the GH3 which needs a strong audio signal to achieve a low-noise floor and to minimize the effect of the AGC circuitry built into the GH3.

Amazing! Thanks so much for all the info. I'm purchasing it right now, and will report back when I've tested it.

I don't use a Sescom line to mic attenuation cable, just a regular mini jack cable and it seems fine really. I always record onto the Tascam as back-up anyway (with the -6db dual recording feature ON) but no problems going into my GH3 that I know of. Will look into these cables you guys have been discussing though.

Good to know. Thanks! I'll let you know when Sescom cable arrives (which should be today) to see how well it works.
