GH13 Anyone use prime lenses exclusively with their GH? Made me fall in love with it again

So true... So true.... I also hope that more manufacturers come out with some other options and I"m leaning more towards investing in glass that I can use on a variety of cameras. I love the micro 4/3rds and plan to stay for a while, but with the quality and cheap adapters, I figure that makes a logical investment.

Oddly enough, I'm starting to feel that's the beauty of it...limited budget, force yourself to work your magic and produce something....but would love to get my hands on some Pentax lenses as well!

I've been letting my friends know what I"m looking for and I inherited a 50mm 1.8 and a 135 2.8... Got 'em for free. .... Keep up the search and you'll find some too.

I can so identify with the obsession of looking for primes. I love'em... 20/1.7, 50/1.8, 100/2.8 but my go to all time favorite - 35/2 fd lens. Whats a zoom lens :-)?

Absolutely
Thats the true benefit with the older manual lenses
you can use these old lenses nicely on nex system as well as m4/3...Im hoping for other companies to produce similar systems.
the panny lenses are great but limited to m4/3 due to electronic connectors controlling everything.
When you have a prime lense that has full manual control not restricted to one system it has more of a future investment ;-)

Primes are all I've got! I bought a GH2 and suddenly found a use for all my lenses - out of storage came the Bolexes, of course, surprise primes from the Pathe, maybe even the Krasnagorsk and Hitachi Betacam and Eyemos lenses will be adapted! On the first weekend I received the GH2 my living-room looked like a workshop.
Love the look but I've managed to prolong the learning-curve. I need a simple zoom with auto-everything while I learn everything else.

I was just happy I could put proper use to my FD/FL glass. I tried the optical adapter for EOS, but fell from satisfactory compared to m42, nikkor, zuiko. I sold the GH2 for what ever profit I could get from it to fund more glass that can be shared between my 7D and ready for GH2.

I still have all my adapters for m43 and batteries so I still want one in the future.

I went out to the local "market" of used camera lenses and all of a sudden there were no more fast 50s to be found! I saw exactly ONE Nikon 50 f1.4 in so so condition, and no f1.2 lenses at all (of any brand).
I have a Canon FD 50mm f1.2L and an 85mm f1.2L that I found on ebay for $550 and $700. They're both superb lenses, but for video, they really only make a perceptible difference when shooting in low-light conditions. Those who've found themselves priced out of the used Nikon, Pentax, and Canon FD markets might want to consider Konica Hexanon or Minolta MD primes. These high quality lenses can often be found for less than $100 and with m43 adapters work just as well on Panasonic G-series cameras. I currently use both Hexanon and FD primes on my GH13 and find the Konicas to have a bit higher contrast than the Canons, which I like when I want to emphasize harsh lighting.

Can you name some of these lessons so I can ebay search them? Like Konica 50mm f1.2 etc...thanks!

Yes, I'm exclusively using primes.
Some Leica M lenses, plus a fantastic old Apla. I've gotten great results (beautiful colour) from an old Kodak c mount.

I read recently where somebody claimed that lenses, when used on a GH2 in ETC mode, have their marked focal lengths multiplied five (5) times - not 2.5 times as I'd been calculating. This would mean a "normal" lens (taking the old 50mm lens on a 35mm camera as a benchmark) would be that lens that is marked 10mm. This would mean we're have all been looking at primes that are too long. Can anyone confirm this?

If you take in the original 2x crop produced by the sensor, then yes, ETC will creat a 5.2 equivalent when working in 1080p.

Thanks! Now maybe people will cease waxing lyrical about using 55mm lenses to use on their GH2 for ETC video! I keep a spreadsheet for my my lenses and have just changed the column for the 35mm equivalent formula as follows:

Pentax SMC M42 Takumar 55mm 55mm 35mm equiv 286mm
Schneider-Kreuznach Cinegon 11.5mm 35mm equiv 59.8
Schneider-Kreuznach Xenon 25mm 35mm equiv 130
Keystone-Elgeet Prime 25mm 35mm equiv 130
Angenieux 17-68 reflex 17mm 35mm equiv 88.4
[Zenit] Meteor 5-1 f1.9 17-69 Zoom 17mm 35mm equiv 88.4
Fujinon crux 10-120 ENG 2/3” 10mm 35mm equiv 52
[seeking wide] 4mm 35mm equiv 20.8
[seeking wide] 8mm 35mm equiv 41.6

[oops! I think I might have just instigated a rush on 4-8mm lenses, sorry]

I got the whole series of Zeiss Jena for Pentacon Six for incredibly small money, I wont tell how much....they are huge and heavy but I love them! I also have Nikkor 50 and 85mm f1.8 which are superb quality and of course the 20mmf1.7 pancake and the 14-140 that came with my GH1. The Voigtlander is next...

hey..

since you used Meteor 5-1 f1.9 17-69 Zoom lens on GH2, I would have some question..

Is it possible to use iz on the GH1 without vignetting?

How is overall feeling about this lens? Any sample shots??

Many thanks,

david

I only use prime lenses on my GH2.

Canon FD 50mm f/1.4
Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95

With those two I'm planning on shooting an entire feature film soon. They match up very well, and are excellent in low light. Plus their focusing rings are buttery smooth. Here's a recent sample of video I shot with those lenses (ignore the crappy audio.)
