I've been interested in getting an external harddrive bay tower, something that can connect to my Mac Pro via eSata. Anyone recommend any towers they've purchased for extra HDD space?:dankk2:
How about these? http://www.lacie.com/ca/products/product.htm?pid=11113. I might pick one up as a I know a guy who works for Lacie and can get me a great deal. Have heard some issues with reliability on this board, though.
My honest recco would be to steer clear of eSATA solutions with the MacPro. I have a quad-core Mac Pro and was running a FirmTek eSATA external drive setup, which worked well. To connect to the internal (motherboard) eSATA connections on the MacPro, I used a NewerTech connection product. It gives you two eSATA ports via the top PCI slot, but it does take some effort to install.
While eSATA works fine, I really think you'll be best served with a PCI-based RAID setup, something like a CalDigit (or another brand). The speed I get with my CalDigit HDPro is ridiculous, and it's fully-protected RAID5, which I don't believe is readily available via eSATA.
Just an opinion from someone who's been where you are.
And after looking over CalDigit's site, I'd say look at the HD Element with their RAID card. I doubt you'll find a better combination of features/performance/support anywhere.
I'm very happy with my SeriTek/5PM with a RocketRAID 2314 RAID Controller. Great speed on a MacPro and yes... RAID 5 is supported. I liked it so much, I got a second one. Five Samsung HD103UJ 1TB drives are about $100 each, the enclosure is $520 and the RAID controller is $180.
