C200: Anyone read or heard anything about the firmware update for the C200 for February?

Strangely silent on the web about the supposedly upcoming .MXF wrapper firmware. Will the update also cover any of the glaring limitations and plain mistakes in the initial firmware that need to be addressed as well?

I don't think it's strange. I can't think of many vendors that provide concrete release dates. We'll hear about it the date it's released I think.

I just find it typical that upon the release of the camera in the Summer, there was a lot of discussion and debate about the firmware update for Febraury 2018 and now we are a few weeks out, radio silence.

True, but all the discussion and debate in summer was between people *outside* of Canon. I don't think anything has changed, other than people realizing that working with raw isn't so hard and that the C200's mp4 files are surprisingly good.

Agreed. Also the revelation from Newsshooter that the update would not fill in the codec gap meant that it's kind of a non-event if that's all you're waiting for. Having said that, I am curious about the update and whether Canon has changed their minds in light of the EVA and all the PR flack they took for protecting the C300 II.

I said it before and I'll say it again: The EVA will be in trouble if Canon adds a broadcast codec to the C200. Canon knows this and that could conceivably make them change course like they did when they added C-Log to the 5D IV.

Agreed, it puts Canon in an interesting strategic position. Makes me wonder though, lines like the EOS Cinema line, for Canon, seem to be mainly prestige products, they don't provide a significant percentage of corporate earnings to a behomoth like Canon, Inc. I wonder if they really care about sales of a camera like the C200 versus the EVA 1? If they wanted to, they could crush EVA 1 sales with the C200 by adding a solid mid-range codec, but it would then compromise C300 MKII, MKIII sales if they gave too many features to the C200. I have to say, after playing with the EVA 1, I think it is a great camera, but it's compromises, for me and how I work, are too many in comparison to the C200. The C200 for me, is a superior value too, it was up and running for a lot less money than the EVA 1 would cost me with having to shell out an extra $2k for an EVF. V90 cards for the EVA 1 once it can shoot the 400 Mbps, are more expensive than the CFast cards for the C200. If I was more of a narrative filmmaker who worked with ACs, I think the EVA 1 would be better choice for me. The Wooden PL mount, the better mid-range codecs, TC i/o would all be better than the stock C200 and I love the look of the EVA 1 imager and color science. But for run & gun and documentary filmmaking, the C200 is a better camera for me, I kind of heacvily rely on DPAF.

If Canon puts 10 bit 422, EVA will be dead and others would be in big trouble, like Sony :) That's why I think that will never happen, because it never happened before with the leading company. That's why Panasonic and Sony are giving every option and feature on the planet, but almost all of them are half assed. Canon is not giving everything, but most of it's options and features are industry leading..

Plus there is that Japanese business cartel theory that some DVXers (myself included) know is in play. Japanese business segments collude with each other to control an overall market. Some things that would be illegal or highly discouraged in Europe or the U.S. as far as business practices and laws are not a factor in Japanese business. I encountered this when I made a documentary about the Japanese sport of Drifting in 2004, American fans were apoplectic over who judged and how Drifting events were judged in Japan and even in D1 events here. Totally what American sports fans would call "fixed".

Yes, I remember Japanese gentlemens agreement from the 90s that no car can have more power than 280bhp, they are very strange..

So many cartel theories and the DVXUser King of Cartel theories DLD is nowhere in sight? Is he restrained by Trump?
