Anyone going to miss DVCPRO HD...?

Anyone going to miss DVCPRO HD...?

I must admit it is on my mind a bit as I anticipate the move into AVCHD.

When it was mainly a consumer codec in low end cameras..' I called it "devil spawn" because of the issues it caused in NLE forums.

DVCPROHD has been a great CODEC and served me very well. Its been so easy to deal with and edits like butter in my Adobe Suites (CS3 - CS5)

The thought of moving away from it kind of freaks me slightly.

I have been assured that P2 is still a big deal commitment with Panasonic and I guess the AF100X will turn up with P2 slots sooner or later. Meantime I guess the external recorder devices will utilise the P2 technology with a choice of recording to the CODEC of ones choice. Including DVCPROHD.

It still will be. I convert my avchd footage to dvcpro hd because I like butter !

Seriously...you cant edit it "native".

That would be a show stopper for me.

My tests indicate that I can edit it native so far... but then ..I still havent done keys , serious CC or FX etc with it.

Havent even tried it in AEFX either

I think that for some jobs, the small file size of AVCHD is going to be a godsend.

Shooting documentaries with P2 cards (and no budget) was a nightmare.

There must be 100 great codecs out there. Why would you choose this one? It's an old holdover from Panasonic's tape days when you couldn't put a full HD signal on a tape. There are MUCH better options out there in the tapeless world. Even Panasonic has moved away from it to AVC-Intra which is a MUCH better tapeless choice.

You can't encode to AVC-Intra from NLEs or After Effects though, right? I'm always envious of Mac users who can export lossless to ProRes and all it's flavors. My best option is QuickTime Animation codec which is far bigger and takes longer to encode and decode than DVCProHD, which encodes and decodes like butter at any resolution and program. Alternatives like DNXHD also take forever to encode.

I know, a debate for an NLE forum. I'm just always on the lookout for a better codec to be using.

I don't own AE so I couldn't tell you. If you really want an AVC-Intra codec, you can buy it. Kind pricey though.

ProRes is not lossless. It's DCT compression just like DNxHD.

Of course. SD would be even faster. DVCProHD is 1280x1080 or 960x720. Of course it's going to be smaller and faster. It's holding 40% less information than a full raster codec.

Not on my machines. What are you doing?

There's a million. What are you looking for? Maybe the Matrox I-Frame codecs would suit. They're a heck of a lot better than the DVCProHD at the same bitrates. And free.

Where did I say that it was the best of all codecs ......and Panasonic can choose do to what ever they want geuss what so can I and even you for that matter.

@ Shooter yes you can edit mts in real time just try 36 hours of footage and post back if it works !

Not saying that its not possible but for very large projects Id still work with dvcprohd !
