Anyone get an iPAd yet?

One question emerges based on the reports.

What were the circumstances when the overheating in the direct sun occurred?

Apple specs indicated 95 degrees.

Without knowing more, how can anyone conclude that there is a widespread significant issue over any other device in the sun
I'm not sure anybody's saying that there's a widespread overheating issue. The other poster just asked about it, and I pointed out that there are several reports online.

The circumstances of the reports don't seem to be anything particularly extreme.

Yep, I quit using Internet Explorer on my PC and use Safari now, much faster.

Safari?! thats now ancient, Chrome's javascript is much faster in fact its the fastest engine on the planet.

The fact it actually compiles the javascript to native machine code on the fly is one of the reasons for its ultra speed.

Even with a ton of heavy CPU applications eg MS SQL Server, 3Ds Max, Visual Studio 2008 & multiple RDPs I'm still browsing at near instance speed (while a full scan of AVG is running) plus five other tabs in different browsers.

I'd like to see how well the ipad renders my HTML Pixel Table format now that would be a good test:

see here about Chromes V8 engine:

Interesting theory by an author and former programmer about the future of computing and how it relates to the ipad--

http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2010/04/why-steve-jobs-hates-flash.html#more

Interesting but, the authors premise is entirely based upon Cloud computing, there are alot who don't think that highly of cloud computing (including myself) (having worked with it):

I think the bigger change is going to be opensource sofware and Open Source Hardware, I think I'll go blog about this...

I think casual everyday computer users who just need basic function, that always works, will migrate more and more to cloud computing because of its ease of use. Once people get used to not having to ever install an OS, or software, or do any maintenence work, they won't put up with buggy OS's and all the other junk that comes with it.

Cloud Computing is the future, period.

As we have more and more devices that become more and more portable, we will want all of our data everywhere, on every device, always in sync.

Backing up is a PITA and half of consumers don't even do it.

We already "cloud compute" with Email, Social Networking, online drives, Pandora Radio (in a sense. Apple is rumored to be working on a streaming iTunes service where all your purcased music would just stream from the cloud to your device, ie Pandora, but you own it). And we are doing more and more with things like Google Calendar/Docs and Apple MobileMe. Google ChromoOS will really shake things up.

The drawbacks don't outweigh the drawbacks of current computing and in the coming decade the kinks will be increasingly worked out. I think "home base" computers with localized data and what not will ALWAYS be there and an important part, but I think cloud computing will become the predominant form of computing within the next 15 years.

Chrome VS Safari on Windows: Chrome wins
Chrome VS Safari on Mac: Safari wins

The noticeable speed difference of Chrome VS Safari in the Mac world is negligible and the Safari features and interface win out. The gap widens a bit in the Windows world and it will largely be a matter of taste, but the speed benefits of Chrome show up more in Windows.

FWIW I use Safari on Snow Leopard and Chrome on Windows 7.

Regarding the overheating issues - iPad has been praised in reviews for keeping VERY cool. In fact, it is fantastic when it comes to staying cool, even when watching non stop movies and intensive tasks for hours on end.

Regarding the heat problems in sunlight. Don't know much about this. I would suppose it represents a pretty limited amount of people that are using their iPads in very hot operating climates. I wonder how their laptops fare in those same conditions. I'd be interested to learn more about this.

Chrome would lock up on my PC every 5th time it would run. Went through 3 installs, I don't think it's there yet. Could be all the java crap that is bothering it? dunno. I'm really happy with Safari on a PC.

Okay, its official. I played with an ipad and I still don't get it. It is an over-sized iPhone. Cool? Yes. But revolutionary and magical? hardly.

It's going to be the must-have costume accessory at Star Trek conventions, though. I expect that a couple hundred little suitable Flash loops have been made for the purpose, already. Not to mention skins.
