Anyone get an iPAd yet?

Okay, for anyone who gives two s%*ts, here are my thoughts on the iPad after a full week on the road.

First, let me just say that the device has the potential to change the way I use a computer in my daily life. What I mean is that like many people, I find that laptop-in-lap has become my default setting. I would surf without much purpose, reading random articles and forum posts, but not being particularly productive. Now, I certainly can and do "work" on my laptop, but being between projects means I have little need for video-editing and photo-retouching power.

With the iPad, I found myself much more "purpose-driven" in my computing. Instead of refreshing the "new posts" link and waiting for Pookie's next great "find" or Mikko to post (yet again) in the Avatar thread, I purchased and read Ebert's book "The Great Movies." I started writing in a journal again. I sat closer to my wife and watched the latest episode of Lost.

Basically, I discovered that the iPad might not do everything I want a laptop to do, but in not doing everything, it does some things so well that I find myself wanting to use it much more often than my laptop.

And of course I did refresh the "new posts" link, just not nearly as often as I would have otherwise.

Second, there simply is no better way to read books or watch handheld digital content than on the iPad. The screen is incredible, with rich colors and a wide viewing angle. I watched movies on the plane to and from Vegas, and I showed samples of my work to reps at NAB. To say everything looked great would be an understatement.

Third, typing on the screen is not that bad for emails and quick blog/forum entries, but a bluetooth keyboard is a nice accessory to have.

The wi-fi signal is decent, but could be better. I'd also urge anyone thinking of getting an iPad to wait and get the 3G version. A mobile device without "everywhere" access is more limiting than it should be.

Here are my "must-have" apps…
- Evernote
- ABC Player
- NYT Editor's Choice
- Netflix
- iBooks
- Kindle
- Bloomberg
- NPR
- Accuweather

Overall, the only real issue I ran into with the iPad was the wi-fi. Sometimes it worked flawlessly, sometimes it had a hard time staying connected. At home, for instance, it works without fail. At the Vegas airport (free wi-fi) it worked perfectly. In my hotel (NYNY) it was spotty and dropped the connection quite a bit. This may not be the iPad's fault, but it was an issue.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. In fact, I think the only time I'll travel with a laptop is when I need to edit (video or photos) on the road. The iPad can essentially do everything else, and it's just more fun to use and interact with.

By the way, this was typed on my iPad.

i was watching an interview (done a few years ago) with steve jobs and bill gates and it was interesting to hear some of the ideas that he was talking about that eventually got implemented into the ipad. anyways there is this really awkward
moment between jobs and the interviewer where you can practically see him thinking to himself, "i can't believe i'm being interviewed by this idiot." start at about 2:50. :cheesy:

Agreed... Jobs looks like a prick.

Anything new is fun at first....give it time...I'm holding out for a few generations because it will dock nicely in my new iCar!

The same can be said about those who worship at a CEOs feet because they make great products. And this is certainly the case with Jobs and Apple. I have five Apple products in the house solely because the technology is great.

I don't personally have the foot-fetish. Make me a useful product and I neither care how lousy you are, nor how wonderful you are. I'll buy the product. I won't think of you, while using it.

I agree with the two previous posts.

I really don't care about who is running whatever company, including Apple.

Just give me something that works, works well, and makes sense.

Tried one yesterday. Keyboard was my biggest concern before trying but worked perfectly. Loved Keynote. Its a fantastic device to show Video, too. I can see myself taking this for presentations to clients.
