Anyone get a A7siii yet?

And of course, that's the one I was most interested in. :furious3:

How is the AF on the others?

It's pretty good. Fast and accurate. Eye AF works as well as any other lens.

I think the Samyangs i have are a little more likely to drift from the subject you select with touch tracking onto an adjacent subject. But I just lower the subject switch sensitivity (or whatever it's called) for these lenses vs the setting I use on my sigma 24-70 or tamron 70-180.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased.

The samyang 45 1.8 is supposed to be stellar. The sony 50 1.8 is ok I think, I cant remember. Viltrox has a 50 1.8 coming out now but I haven't read a review yet. Then there's the sigma 50 1.4 which is now like $700, although I'm confident sigma will redesign the lens specifically for mirrorless and come out with a better, smaller version.

I also think that samyang will release a new 50mm f/1.4 with better AF. But I haven't heard it rumored and I'm guessing that their 24mm f/1.4 will come first

I rented the top of the line sony GM 50mm 1.4. Heavy lens. Also noticed a bit of focus hunting when the lens was on the gimbal, compared to my 20mm 1.8. But the 20 mm is pretty much useless on the slider, so I;ve got to get an interview/slider lens at some point.

The lower level sony 50mm lens gets a lot of demerits online for slow and erratic AF performance.

Generally, larger-aperture lenses have worse AF than smaller-aperture ones (perhaps this is invariably the case?) I think it's because of the weight of the elements or the complexity, but I'm not sure. the sigma 35 f/1.2 is a gorgeous optic, but you can see the motor stepping through its intervals even in a wide shot.

Also, newer lenses generally have better AF (although I suppose it really just depends on the motor design). I'm not sure when the GM 50 came out. (The Rokinon 50 f/1.4 was the first autofocus lens they made for e-mount. They must have screwed up the motor or physical design somehow, or else it could have been fixed with firmware updates. Their next couple lenses needed a couple firmware updates to become reliable but then were good. And their 4th or 5th lens release was good right from the start. This is the history according to Dustin Abbott, anyway.)

The Sony 85 f/1.8 is supposed to be the best 85 for autofocus. The Rokinon 85 f/1.4 is actually supposed to be slightly better than the GM 85 (based on a keeper rate on a running dog test if I recall correctly, which doesn't tell you everything about every type of focus behavior). I've gotten my info mostly from the reviews of Dustin Abbott, who is relatively thorough and has relatively standardized reviews. And a very low amount of time-wasting fluff. Plus, most of the reviews are available in written form.

The Tamron 70-180 has amazing autofocus. I wish it had IS (or VC or OSS or whatever) and it's probably not THE prettiest telephoto zoom out there (but it's still pretty - it's hard to go wrong with a telephoto zoom.) The AF is great.

If you want a normal lens and dont need f/1.4, I would recommend the Rokinon 45mm f/1.8. It should have very good AF. Also their 75mm f/1.8. They ahould have better AF than the 35 and 85 f/1.4 I got, but I wanted minimal DOF and the AF is good enough.

Also, I bought the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 FE and it has very good AF as well

But I'm thinking that the rokinon/samyang 45 would do you good

I still don't get 50mm FF lenses. How expensive, the size, weight, lack of AF performance. The 50mm has traditionally been the sharpest, lightest and inexpensive lens you could buy. I'm even talking about 35mm film days, yes that was Full Frame! There's no reason why 50mm 1.8 shouldn't be fast enough and great. Optically it's the simplest angle of view to build. I was watching a video that was talking about that manufactures make most of their money on the lenses. So maybe this is just them gouging the heck out of you because they can.

I've been off/on the A7Siii for about 2 weeks now. Besides the color science lagging slightly behind Canon, I have no regrets about switching.
This camera checks a lot of boxes for my mid-level corporate work. Combined with the Ronin RCS 2, the arca-swiss/manfrotto plate combo lets me go from sticks -> gimbal -> slider effortlessly. Huge time saving on set or around clients. The 120fps is sick, nice 3rd party Small Rig options, autofocus is crazy good.

I shot these snippets for my kid's YT page, but they're helping me get comfortable with the rig before taking it out on paid gigs.

Nice John.

What slider are yo using these days?

Thanks Matt HNY...

I've been using a small edelkrone Wing Pro. Maybe 10" of travel. For what I do in 120 it's plenty.
However, this camera's eye-tracking is so dammed good I might need to up grade for interviews LOL

I just picked up an A7SIII. Haven't had the chance to film much yet, but does anyone think Sony will ever give it S-Cinetone in a future FW upgrade or are they going to protect their cinema line products?

I doubt they will give it S-Cinetone. But hey what do I know. Didn't the cameras that have it have it from the outset?
