C100: Anyone else Got Moire and Aliasing?

So overall hugely impressed with this camera. However I just shot a job in 25p on the internal cards and started to review the footage direct from the C100's HDMI on my Plasma.

Pretty disturbed to see obvious aliasing in fine details like roof tiles and electrical lines. Its was better than the Canon 7D, but its not something I have ever seen in Sony F3, Fs700 or Red footage. And was something I thought had been effectively eliminated.

As this was direct from camera could this be a 25pfs not playing nicely with HDMI thing? Anyone else got experience of this?

I haven't processed the footage in FCPX yet, so will be anxiously waiting to see it after that.

I'd wait until you import it to be sure. I have never seen this with my C100. I had the Black Magic prior to this and that thing would alias and my C100 is nothing like that at all. In fact, in the 2 months I've had it I never noticed any aliasing. Good Luck. This is not normal and it must be a setting on the TV or a mismatch in HDMI handshake that can cause this.

Fabric yes, talent was wearing a white and black tightly striped shirt, it was very noticeable.

I have not seen any moire as of yet. And I shoot lots of architecture with every pattern and fabric you can throw at the camera.
Maybe a very minor aliasing that most cameras would pick up. If you have moire, post the sample.

It does happen, certainly. And it absolutely does happen in the F3 and FS700 also. Red has worked very hard to eliminate it.

Look at a properly-shot resolution chart for any camera you're considering; if you see the fine detail represented in orange/purple then that's an obvious sign that the camera will indeed show aliasing on fine detail.

Obviously the C300, F3, FS700 etc are all vastly better than the 7D in this aspect, but they all do exhibit colored aliasing on fine detail.

I think that the aliasing may be due to 25PF. I had the same issues but it seemed to go away when I shoot 24p

Probably, I've seen aliasing from my C100, but if it happens it's so insignificant that in practical terms it's not there. I shoot mostly PF30.

Turn sharpening down. If its at the default 0, there will be some ailiasing I've found. -10 looks great, and I'd say you can go all the way to around -4 and still be good. I've found around -7 and -6 sharpening to be a good compromise.

Yea I definitely had moire when my sharpening was at 0. I have been using -10 with no moire but it's a bit too soft meaning I always have to apply sharpening in post. I might go up to -4 and try that.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Great to get some feedback.

i'll post some examples. but I suspect its the 25p thing going awry here and there, and that I haven't messed with the camera's default sharpening settings so I imagine they are set to 0..

looking forward to see what this camera can do with a Ninja!

The aliasing depends on the lens used. With very sharp lens (like Canon 24-105 4 L IS) it can appear when you set medium aperture and criticaly focus on some very tight pattern. It's because the OLPF is not perfect, but it's always tradeoff between sharpness and aliasing.

well having now finished the project it looks like it was an issue between the 25p AVC HD and the HDMI out from the the camera. final render has none of aliasing problems i first saw - which is a relief!
