just wondering if this is a valid workaround for the "crippled" 17mbs 25 fps on the gh2 ?

Well... A big surprise today on the new Atomos website. The Ninja does NOT support 1080p25. Ridiculous!!!
Isn't Atamos UK (25p) based company? Strange then not to include 25p in the initial version...
Hi Martin
The Ninja does support 1080p25 but this has not been included in the first release of the software. It will be in the next release which will follow shortly. We will try not to be so ridiculous in future.
By the way, we have had reports of successful recording with a GH2, but we're waiting for more reports about exactly what was recorded before claiming any success with this camera.

Well, Dave, that's incredible good news. Especially about the GH2. It's a matter of patience on all sides. I hope that my Ninja arrives this week. I shoot exclusively 24p with both the GH2 and the EX1R, so i can also let you know - same day - what and how the GH2 records.
Martin.
We're looking very closely at the output from the GH2 and some of our users are getting very good results with the Avisynth scripts that you can see on this forum. I wouldn't worry too much about the 10/8 bit thing. If the picture from the camera's compressed footage is good, it will look even better when recorded on the Ninja at 220 mbps or whatever. The number of bits is only one of the factors in determining perceived quality. On the lower costs cameras, even if they did output a 10 bit signal, you may find that the additional two bits only contain noise and very little additional information. ProRes is a 10 bit codec, and HDMI can carry 10 bit signals. Even if we receive an 8 bit signal, we make it 10 bits by adding two zeros. This may sound a bit pointless, but it does have advantages, because every subsequent stage of processing will be done at 10 bit resolution, so dissolves and gradients will look better. Note that this can't improve the original image, but if you then put, say, a vignette or filter effect in, the effect will be done at 10 bit resolution.Don't get me wrong. Initially I was excited about the possibility of uncompressed 10 bit real-time recording. But GH2's crippled HDMI output killed the fun. Hopefully you get it right about the software controlled hardware fixes the issue. If it works, that's very very cool.
