Anyone doing sound separate on their HVX200a?

I'm shooting on the HVX200a and use the camera to also record sound. The sound is not bad except for two problems: 1. The sound guy is attach to me since the headset and mic is coming out of the camera. 2. The long cable if it touch the pole you can hear it so the sound guy has to keep the cable away from the pole and of course you can't do any real running scenes with someone attached to you LOL.

Okay so now that is out of the way I was thinking of getting the H4N this will do two things for me 1. Release the sound guy from my side. 2. Sound guy will have less cable to deal with and run with the sound gear.

So the question I have ----- Is anyone doing separate sound with their Hvx200a? If so do they find this helpful? I know editing will be like the old days - film one line and sound on different line coming in separate. I know that other are using this set up for the Canon 7d and 5d.

If someone is doing this setup do you turn off the camera sound? Is matching the two together work fine for you? I know I will need to use the slate board to match up the sound.

Thanks

I have done both.....I think both are good for different kinds of shoots.

In Camera Sound -- If you are the one responsible for levels, wireless lav mics where you just set and forget, small run and gun situations. I mainly use this for generic corporate work when I'm alone or need small crews.

Digital Recorder for sound -- Larger productions where you have a dedicated audio specialist who will adjust levels during the shoot. Also when he needs to be in different areas that you are. I mainly use this for short films etc.

Without a doubt it will be an extra step and can be really annoying when you are trying to sync sound from a separate recorder to your video....ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS record nat sound in your camera anyways....this will make syncing a lot easier for those tough shots when an actor's mouth isn't on camera.

Also, use slate/clapboard. This will also make it easier to sync. If you dont have either, just do something that will make a loud quick sound that you can shoot. For instance, a few times I just had the actor clap their hands once. No right or wrong.

Yea, something like a Tascam field recorder would be your best bet as I believe the Zoom only has mini stereo input and I highly doubt a sound guy would like that.

Why do people have to post when they obviously don't know what they are talking about? The Zoom H4n has XLR inputs.

Just worked today on a RED MX shoot doing sound. I decided to rent an H4n and it worked wonderful. Sound quality is awesome, long battery life, easy to adjust, clean preamps.

You might want to move this to the audio section.

You can build or buy a snake cable that will separate the cam from the audio person. A snake will provide a headphone return cable for the boom op and the opportunity to add a mixer. If you can use cables that is always better, but if you are running around, you might also consider wireless. Do a bit of research before you buy a Zoom, there are other products out there.
