C300: Anybody use Canon CN-E 30-105 Cine zoom with C300?

Trying to get a more subtle filmic look, than I'm getting with Arri Alura or RED primes and zooms. Does the warmth and fall off of the Canon 30-105 help? I tend to run detail at -10 and add a Tiffen Digital Diffusion 1/4, but would like a lens that doesn't make the C300 seem videoish. What about complimentary primes?

The 30-105 lens is really excellent, but I'm not sure it's going to give you that specific 'soft' film look you're looking for. It's definitely a better look than the RED lenses, and different from Alura, but I'm not sure if it's more 'filmic.' That's such a subjective thing, you know. Maybe try an old Cooke zoom, like the Varotal 20-100? Modern coatings really bring out a lot of micro-contrast in modern lenses that some people associate with a 'video' look.

I've been super happy with the look from my Canon CN-E primes, but I'm not terribly hung up on a 'film' look, either. I love the feel and warmth of them. I really don't like the look of RED lenses, mostly because they lack personality.

Thank you Brian. I know the Canon is very sharp, but I think it handles highlights in a more filmic, softer way. The CN-E primes are useless to me because they aren't available in PL-Mount.

Thank you Mitch. I had seen this some months ago and forgot about it. Last year, I attended a C500/C300 training class at Abel Burbank. The 30-105 was used on a C500 and we saw footage we shot projected very large. I remember being impressed with the lens.

I think you'd love the Cooke 18-100…it's exactly what you are asking for. I have some stuff I shot with mine that I can dig-up if you'd like.

Thanks, I bought the Canon 30-105. Probably the better choice for rental inventory than an older, larger zoom, but I will check out a Cooke. Their primes certainly have a great reputation for their distinctive look.

Thank you Mitch. I thought long and hard about the Angie DP 30-80 and Zeiss CZ 28-70. Really like the extra reach of the Canon and I've heard that the Zeiss breathes. Can't go wrong with any of them, of course!

I know for a fact that it is a completely different design.

oh really! it`s just i came to that idea based on their cinema primes... but if u say its new - its must be new.

still my FD 35-105 f3.5 works great on c300, and compared to CN-E 30-105 its just a few hundreds of usd. these old converted lenses are wonderful, what makes me think if their old lenses were so wonderful, why modern are kind of sucks?

They are different designs indeed.

The CN-E 30-105 is a T2.8 and the old lens you are talking about is a F3.5 which is really more of a T4 so quite a difference in speed actually. Mind you though, the old lenses are quite nice also :)

Why do you think modern Canon Cinema lenses are not good?

i meant old manual slr lenses , compared to new modern slr lenses (not cinema lenses of course)! old slr zooms its like a budget cinema zoom lenses, the emulsion used on old canon fd is much pleasant then what we see in modern lenses. hard stops, manual iris (that could be de clicked), smooth focus ring rotation, and even if there is a breathing its very different from modern lenses. modern lenses maybe a little sharper, but i would not say its a plus for photo, but not a plus for video its for sure.

to be honest i use slr zeiss primes now, but only for the reason that in most cases they are cheaper then a good copy of an old fd prime, and editors complaining less as the color is same with in zeiss line of lenses. but still nothing will make me change my fd 135mm f2.0 to zeiss, as in that case fd135mm cheaper , but most importantly its such a sweet lens, real beauty. too bad zeiss not making any slr zooms, only primes.

but zooms, i tried several modern autofocus zooms, and i did not like any of them, sold all of it. but old zooms are really good, i believe its a great alternative to cinema zooms. price difference helps here as well.
