anybody shoot on the Leica 14-50mm f 2.8 zoom?

Its supposed to be a great lens. Came with the Panasonic L10 in a kit which now fetches up to anything over £600 on eBay just because of the Leica lens.

If you see this lens for a good price don't hesitate to snap it up. Quality will be sky high.

Sorry, does anyone know if OIS works even if you use a non standart 4/3 to m4/3 adapter (aka the one you can ge ton ebay for cheap)

THANKS :)

(and happy new year)

I would expect that, but haven't tried...

What I know is - people connect Panasonic lenses with OIS to E-P1 and use lens stabilization (they turn off body stabilization). And it works.

(Happy New Year!)

Hey Rabot,

couple questions.

Did you need to buy the official Panasonic 4/3rds adapter, the one with the electronics inside, to be able to use the Leica lens or can you use those cheaper 4/3rds adapters off Ebay? And is the aperture ring, a manual/physical one?

Do you have any footage or stills from this combo?

Thanks.

I had to buy the official adater since the focus only work if the camera is on, and after reading some stuff, most people told that the aperture ring only work with the L10 or whatever the camera that lens came with.

BUT, after putting the lens + adapter on the camera, it looks like the aperture ring do work!

For footage I have that already uplaoded on youtube:

If I remeber well, those must be either 640 or 1k iso, 1/50 or 1/60 shetter speed, 2.8 of course. FullHD. Converted to 24 using compressor, but something got wrong cause the footage I get is way better now.

What you have to know is that le focus of this lens do move when you zoom in or out, so for movie it's quite wierd.

Hum, now for picture I do have some but nothing worth seeing since I'm no photographer or anything, maybe if there's anything you'd really wanna see?

How does the OIS hold up? Is the extra stop and better glass worth a shorter range and lack of autofocus?

I'm always torn on zoom lenses for the GH1 - I don't have a kit lens and want something faster, but am not sure $650 bucks is worth it for a 3.5 lens :( I'm wanting to get a t2i just so I can get a stablized lens with a constant aperture.

Ideally I'd want the 14-35 SWD since it's f2 and wide enough to be able to handhold without needing OIS, but it's 1900 bucks. Decisions decisions. Kit lens is too slow, but honestly, if I'm outdoors or in ample light, the kit lens is my ideal setup.

Is the Leica 14-50mm that much sharper than the kit lens in your opinion?

I still can't believe NOT A SOUL has posted footage with the 14-35mm SWD F2 - I know it's expensive, but I'd figure there'd be at least one sample or thread by now on the Olympus super fast zoom.

Hum, the thing is, when I was shooting with the kit lens, I turned the noise reduction up (witch mean -2) cause of the people here, and I found out that much of my footage lacked detail, and now I'm shooting with it on 0 or +1.

I beleive both have the same sharpness imo (FOR VIDEO), but the still I like my picture better with the Leica. I haven't done any particular test tho.

The OIS does work, once again haven't done any test, but turning the switch on an off and shaking while recording shows a lil diffrence. I can take pictures at like 1/5s and it works pretty great.

I think switching is all about preference, since I shoot alot of shows and indoor stuff, f4 simply didn't cut it.

While f2.8 does, and even 3.5 works. (again, it might look under for some, but works for me)

The entire clip was shot using that lens. For low light I suggest watching toward the middle, that sequence only was shooted under a single neon light.

Prolly at that setting 1/60, 800 or 1000iso, f2.8 or 3.5 (depending on zoom). Once again, it got color corrected, and such...

If you check at then end you have more conventionals shots where you can see the overall sharpness and such...

If you have any more question, please ask :)

Thanks - the f stop is my biggest gripe - I really want the kit lens since outdoor stuff I want no other setup than to have it's sharpness, focal length range, and great macro capabilities and autofocus, but don't want to shell out heavy cash for the Leica in addition only getting a stop difference and losing everything else...buying zooms is so hard for the GH1.

If they made a 35-50 OIS 1.8 lens then I'd just get that and stick with the kit lens, but can't wait on phantom lenses :(

the Leica does look like it has better latitude, the colors and contrast just look better - more detail in the mids and the highlights don't seem to get blown out and flare as much.

It's a great lens honestly, just wished it had the single shot focus at least.

That lens is kinda harsh to focus with and for some reason, the whole focus pulling is never smooth for some reason, even if you turn in in a constant it's just not made for that... for some reason.

Greetings, I have just purchased the Leica 14-50mm (f.2.8-3.5) for my GH1. I have found that the lens seems to zoom when pulling focus as you mentioned in your post. Did you find a solution to this problem? This zooming when focusing means the lens is no good for me, it is a shame as the lens is sharp, wide and fast!

I would greatly appreciate any response.

Regards

Sadly, the solution I found was to buy the Olympus 14-54 MKII and sell the Leica for 550 Usd.

There is no lens that will keep the focus when you zoom in out out execpt the autofocussing one, and I don't trust it that much. (I never made scientific testing about them, but i have acces to the little Panny 14-45 ad the Olympus 14-54 and I'm never tolly satisfied with the Panny result.)

The leica lens is ideed really good for photo, but when it comes to video or using it on a gh1, it has its flaw. The olympus is a much better choice, and hopefully Panny will release a M4/3 version of the leica lens.

Sorry for the sad answer :(

Just wondering how you are liking the lens and how you are working with pulling focus on the olympus

I often use the single shot af. Its not so fast and can start hunting, but in well controlled ligth there are no problems.

Manual focussing can be done and you get use to the focus ring speed very quickly!!
