GH3 Any word on GH3 cage?

Looks to be the GH2 cage that guy built a couple of years back and never ended up selling. GH3 appears to fit very nicely. I really liked this one. It looked every bit the quality of the ReWo.

By far the best cage system I saw at NAB, IMO. I really, really like the quality of their stuff. The one thing they couldn't answer though (and I didn't speak to Ryan directly) was whether you could access the GH3 battery in this cage system. If so, I think we've found a remarkable cage system for the GH3. In addition, because it's not "custom" you can easily swap out other camera bodies using different sized rod risers if necessary.

Chenopup,

Thanks for sharing!

Unfortunately I was out-of-country so couldn't make NAB. What other GH3 cages caught your eye?

Best,
B

Well there aren't any dedicated GH3 cages out there, so everything is all subjective. Letus has a generic cage that they showed which is pretty much just top, bottom and sides and could handle most of the smaller dslrs, however it seemed to be made to go with their MCS system and wasn't set up (at the time) for just a cage, rail configuration.

I like Genus' top handle but don't trust the hot shoe on the GH3 that much to just float a handle off of it.

Aside from Wooden Camera, there wasn't really anything else that stuck out and really looked like it would fit the GH cams as well. Bummer. I have a Gini cage for my GH2 and I absolutely love it but as far as quality, configurability, I think Wooden Camera has it nailed. Would love to see someone still do a cage like "Jake's Cage" though. That was top notch.

Yep. GH3 door opens on this no problem (per what he says in the video). I was super impressed with their gear, which is why I shot the video.

Inspired by this thread, I purchased the small quick cage from Wooden. Really nice - light, grabs the camera well, great access, compact, etc.

Added a rail and a 90-degree from other kit - experimenting with an improvised HDMI lock and a mount for my follow focus.

Very nice! The extra parts look almost like they're stock. What are they from?

Hope you'll post some more photos once you've added your other gear.

Ha! Don't tell Wooden but those two bits are from that cheap as dirt Polaroid shoulder stabilizer. I will add a few photos once everything is assembled. I am away for the next two weeks so I will add them then.

Was out in the setting sun with my Small HD on an adjustable 6" arm. Everything is very solid and vertical rod makes a great grip off the body.

This is the plan:

Pulled that image from Cheesycam. Basically, I have another 90 which will come off the back of the rail, grab a cable clamp from plumbing supply, etc. Super easy to align height and distance of the rail for the clamp. A little clunky but absolutely secure, cheap, and definitely not more cumbersome that other pro solutions I've seen.

Pics of final setup in two weeks.

This, coupled with a rail mount, might be an interesting solution.

Of course, it costs $40 and you don't get bonus points for coming up with a DIY solution.....

Actually, you could probably just buy this piece:

and screw it into one of the 1/4-20 threads on the bottom of the plate. It's $19. From their site:

The JerkStopper Thread Mount has 1/4"-20 male thread that can easily be attached to... any other 1/4"-20 device or support..... The included aluminum lock nut allows the JerkStopper to be rotated and secured in any direction for easy customization.

Nothing too exciting but here is what I came up with for now - a little clunky but totally effective, parts I already had plug a $0.27 facet washer from the hardware store adequately dremeled. Yes, the hard rubber washer gets stuffed into the block which then clamps down on it, securing the HDMI cable.

Really like this cage - light, strong, not too much. This add-on works fine for the single-rail follow focus I use. Happy enough for my docu work!

Regarding the Swedish C Cage, looks like another great option but I'm glad for the lower profile of this cage, really beefy baseplate, larger and more versitile top cheese plate - still experimenting with what arrangements work best.

That looks pretty fantastic solution to me!

By the way, I see you've got the camera straight piece on the back, so it looks like you can't flip the screen closed unless you remove it. Is the piece necessary to keep the camera from rotating? Or can it be used without this piece?

You can certainly remove the "straight piece" on the back and the friction of the mount points are plenty secure. That piece certainly ads but it isn't needed if you want to manipulate the screen.

Found a photo of the S Chameleon rigged up and it looks pretty slick: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cablefreak/8728932407/
Would love to find that HDMI cable, then perhaps use the stopper you posted above on the inside of the vertical part of the cage? I agree that it is pricy for what it is, but so is all of this! ug.
