Any Vegas Users Interested In Color Correction Tutorials?

I've been wondering how to calibrate a PC monitor for the correct color. I was noticing that when I view the same image on different PC's. The image colors aren't the same. Any ideas?

You definitely want a calibrated monitor when working on anything visual on computer. The standard tool for monitor calibration is a colorimeter. There are several available by various manufacturers ranging in price from under $100 to around $250.

Pantone (link) has a nice range of tools to start you off.

Also when it comes to correction, I have been trying to get everything neutrally balanced, and then after that was done, I thought one was supposed to change the mood with color/contrast. Is my workflow incorrect?

I think there's confusion between color correction and color grading.

Correction is the first part of what you said; grading is the second, stylistic part.

But a lot of people say "correction" to mean both.

As for the workflow, my take on it is this -- it's all about figuring out what's different between the image you have and the image you want, and then making the changes. For me, I don't make it neutral first; I go straight for what I want.

I could have added Grain I suppose?

Robert,

I really like the results you posted. With the exception of the shot underneath the girls head you can hardly see any shadow. Furthermore, I think that your shot really adds this very menacing feel and look to the whole shot. Very nice stuff and I'm impressed.

Thanks for your help and starting this thread. I'm looking forward to seeing more examples. This is actually a good challenge because we're using the basics. I also use magic bullet (but not for this exercise).

I overuse MB, hence one of the reasons why I'm excited about this thread. I know that anything MB can do I can do, but it just comes down to learning how to do it.

I'm excited by these shots already.

10 mins:

Interior.jpg

Going for a "morning" look...

Levels, Secondary CC on the pillows, glow.

Exterior.jpg

Just trying to bring it to life...
Levels, Secondary CC (water, grass, mulch), Color Balance (reduce blue cast), Contrast.

Looking at that second one, her face is a little too bright. Might take that down. I love this thread.

OK, well I went after the exterior and it just doesn't look good. I pretty much started wtih a color curves, went into color levels, two layers of secondary color correction on the scarf and grass. I need to play with this some more, but hey, 15 minutes of playing around...

I like the way the image leans towards primary colors (i.e. the blue railing). What plug in seemed to affect that primary blue the most?

Horse,

Your exterior shot looks really good as well as the colors on the pillows for that interior shot. The lifeless originals are really popping and look much better.

What do ya'll say we shift this thread from neutrals to some specific looks (such as warmer, cooler, ect.)

Thanks, Jeremy!

I'll try a few different looks this afternoon and see if I can come up with something that doesn't suck.

I was going for 'A Scanner Darkly' look. This is as close as I could get. If anyone is able to improve on this, I'd really like to know how to do it. I also think that the render time on this could be incredibly long.

Robert,

I gotta agree with Horse. I really like that look that you came up with. It reminds me of those commercials that look animated on top of the film stock. Very cool, very stylistic and interesting.

Tonight I am going to try to do a couple of looks and see what I can come up with.

One thing, is there anyway that we can get Horse, Bennis, & Hudson to post the settings that you used to get those results? I am really curious because mine look similar, but just lacking that extra ummph.

I was trying to get an overcast sort of look, but I think her face is still a little blue. Any ideas?

Color Corrector:
-Low Angle 344.1 Magnitude .226
-Mid Angle 344.7 Magnitude .354
-High Angle 88.1 Magnitude .465

Brightness and Contrast:
-Brightness -0.04
-Contrast 0.04

That Richard Linklater/rotoscoping effect looks awesome. I've tried to get something like that for a long time. Looks very much like the scene from Waking Life with Jesse and Celine.
