Any P90X people here ?

Also started on the 1st ... two days in I'm sore as can be but I'm still in :)

I am woefully out of shape, and by all rights should have probably started with a lesser program. But I want to push myself so I'm sticking with this. I can't do as much as the people on the video, but I'm making sure I do every exercise they do. I also can't do it as well, as fast, as high, as whatever as them, but I do the best I am able at my current strength and fitness level, then push myself as far as I can beyond that. When I just can't anymore I stop, I usually try to pick up the last few with them if I can, but if I just can't then I don't.

I don't have any aspirations of competing in any body building competitions, I just want to feel healthy, have strength and energy, and be able to tie my shoes while still breathing :)

Two days in, 88 to go!!

Question. So after 90 days you're looking fine and ripped, how do you maintain it? Do they have an outline?

not in one set. i'm trying to get back into the habit after about a year of doing nothing. my personal best in one set is 45, but yesterday i could only manage 18

We're enjoying it so far. Currently on the "lean" program. Both of us are very sore, and I always get a lot of indigestion during the work-out, about halfway through.

It's the first work-out I've done that I actually enjoy! Most work-out's I find very boring, not p90x.

Also started on Sept 1st so today is my rest day after 6 days straight... my muscles aren't as sore as first 2 days but I felt great after each work out...

Finished the first week, today is also my rest day. Days 3 and 4 were the worst in terms of soreness, but I seem to be past the first week soreness and now into the workout soreness. In otherwords I'm still feeling a little sore, but it's not prohibitive from doing other things any more. I can stand up with out groaning and can climb stairs without holding the hand rail :)

The biggest benefit I've discovered so far is that my mind feels much more alert already. I was getting pretty lethargic and run down and my mind was so tired all the time. After 3 days I was already noticing how much clearer my mind was and how much better I felt over all.

I feel really good after doing one of the workouts, I'm almost sad there isn't one today (there is a stretch exercise you can do on day 7 and I still may, but not obligating myself ... I know my body needs a break) because of how good I feel after.

Week two begins tomorrow, I'm actually looking forward to it. I hate it while I'm doing it, but I love it at the same time :)

This is not the only way to get into shape, but I would highly recommend it for anyone looking. The workouts are serious and intense, but they are very good to show alternate ways to accomplish it, and good to stress that it's ok to take a break if you need to. The thing that sold me on P90X was when I heard Tony interviewed on the radio around the time I was first looking into it. The interviewer had already started and was talking about how he wasn't able to keep up and Tony told him not to expect to do as well as them when first starting out. He said they (the instructors/demonstrators) were not able to do as much or as well when they started, they have been doing it for a long time and are now at a higher fitness level. He said, just do as much as you can and don't worry about the rest, then the next time push to do a little more and eventually you will find you can keep up with them.

During the workout they often recite this motto, "Do your best ... and forget the rest". That is the right mindset. I've worked out with trainers who berated me for not doing as much as them. But they were in great shape and I wasn't, so how was I supposed to keep up with their level? And no, it's not an excuse to do a little and sit back and watch. You should push to do as much as you can, and I do, but I have no ego in this. I know I'm not in shape, and know I can't do what they can do ... yet! :)

On to week 2!!

Endorphins are fun. Can't beat endorphins.

In my experience trainers who actually berate you are not the people with whom to train...

Still going, just started week 3 yesterday. It's killing me, but I love it. I already feel big improvements in the various muscle groups throughout my body. I'm getting stronger and feeling better every day.

I have been avoiding the Recovery Drink because it contains Whey Protein and I'm lactose intolerant. But I recently read a study that said Chocolate Milk is a good recovery drink, and that chocolate soy milk has the same ratio of carbs and proteins. Wondering if anyone else has heard about this, what you think about it?

I also read another recovery substitute: 1 tbsp of soy powder mixed into 8 oz of apple or grape juice. Thoughts?

I'm not a big fan of soy milk etc because of the things I hear about soya-plant hormones (estrogen analogs) that one can absorb via consuming soy products (non-fermented products, anyway).

Unless you are super-lactose-sensitive whey products shouldn't be a problem because whey is the protein component of the milk and lactose is a sugar which is separated out during processing. But there may be sufficient traces to cause trouble if your system is very sensitive (my Mom can't even eat hard cheeses, which have practically no lactose left in them at all...)

There are rice- and almond-derived protein powders etc that are good alternatives.

Good to know about Soy, I didn't realize there was reason for concern. I'll have to check into that more. Thanks.

From what I've read there is a difference between Whey Protein Isolates and Whey Protein Concentrates. The isolates have a negligible amount of lactose (less than 0.1 gram per tablespoon), but the concentrates do contain lactose and the amount can vary with each product. If I remember correctly the recovery drink contains whey protein concentrates.

Any thoughts on the protein powder (whether soy, rice, almond, etc) mixed with apple or grape juice? I also heard just drinking a glass of Orange Juice after a workout gives similar benefits.

I'm not trying to get all heavy into body building/nutrition/etc, but from what I understand the body benefits by taking in something like this after an intense workout. I'm just trying to take care of my body and try to avoid getting hurt or sick.

Thanks

I mix the protein powder into water (it's horrible chocolate flavor, which makes for a satisfyingly awful chocolate-chemical-water beverage; I put in as little water as possible so as to have less of it to ingest).

Generally speaking you do want to consume a good serving of protein after an aggressive workout so as to provide your body with muscle-repair/growth materials when they're going to do the most good.

I'm not sure about the benefits of plain orange juice since it's very high in sugars. I suppose you'll gain a short-lived energy boost but it doesn't sound like a great idea to me. So far as I understand it you want that dose of simple/complex carbohydrates *before* exercising so as to put some fuel in your bloodstream for the muscle tissue to draw upon, for energy. Versus the kind of first-thing-in-the-morning-before-eating type of aerobic exercise that's aimed at burning fat.

Yea, that's what I thought too re: OJ ... but what I was reading lately seemed to indicate that the sugar is not an issue during the 30 minutes after an intense workout. It's all so confusing though, so much information and everyone saying why the last guy I read is out of his mind crazy :)

I know I need to increase my protein intake in general and especially after my workouts. So I'll have to try these different options out. I am fairly lactose sensitive, not the worst, but it doesn't take a lot to trigger; but I may give their recovery drink a try. I just hate to have to buy even more lactaid medicine than I already do. But if it's tolerable that may solve my problem. Otherwise I might try your solution .... and continue to research and learn what I can.

I haven't researched this but perhaps gelatin (Jell-O, etc) could be a useful alternative source of protein. IIRC that's just about all it is. Depending upon the brand it's either mostly agar, or rendered cattle bones and slaughterhouse floor sweepings...

I found someone selling the individual packets of the P90X recovery powder for a few dollars, so I can try it out. Much better than spending $45+ for the tub and finding out I can't tolerate it.

Eat a turkey sandwich and call it a day.

Glad to see you're taking care of yourself, LJR.

Take some pics along the way to serve as encouragement.

I must'a misread the title.....

I have completed three weeks of P90X and feel stronger than I have been in a long time (still a long ways to go yet). I've been doing a lot of research into nutrition, trying to become more educated so I make better choices overall. I want to be able to change my diet in a way that is beneficial but is not so radical a change that I can't keep it up ongoing. My goal in this process is to make moderate course corrections that I can maintain as permanent life changes.

I found a product called Isopure which is a Whey Protein Isolate and is guaranteed to be Lactose free. They have various different products with different amounts of protein and carbs, and it comes in flavored powders or premixed fruit flavored juice drinks. I grabbed a couple bottles of the premixed drinks and while I was there the clerk showed me another brand that was also lactose free, so I took one of those as well. The second one (I can't remember the name) they told me to not refrigerate, that it got chalky and tasted better at room temperature. So as soon as I got in the car I drank it ... WOW! It was bad ... and hard to drink, but I drank it. So I was a bit concerned about the Isopure, but they actually weren't bad. There is still a bit of a funny taste, but I think that is because of what it is. I've tried two of the flavors and both were quite tolerable, something I could continue to drink.

The two I tried were zero carb and 40G protein. I drank each within 15 minutes of my very intense workout and noticed I felt better later than I had been before. Also the next day the muscles were less sore than after previous workouts.

I've been looking into the products for a couple reasons. One, I need a recovery drink to help build the body up after my workouts. And, two, I'm not getting anywhere near as much protein as I need (and too much carbs, but I'm working on that too).

I've been doing workouts 6 days a week that are very conservatively estimated to burn 600 calories. And I've dropped my intake to between 1500 and 2000 calories a day. Yet I had only lost about 5 pounds and then held at that place for a week. Since doing all this investigation and then making these additional changes (boosting the protein and trying to greatly reduce sugars/carbs) I started to drop some weight. I lost 3 pounds just over the weekend.

So I know I'm on the right track. And I know this high protein/low carb isn't a long term thing. The body needs carbs, especially when doing heavy workouts. But right now I have so much fat stored I need to reduce sugars and carbs so the body is forced to burn those first.

I've learned a lot, and have a lot more to learn. It's interesting and I want to know enough to make smart, informed decisions; but at the same time I don't want to get a degree in nutrition, so I'm trying to keep the information relevant to my real, every day life.

Maybe at the end I can write a book to add to the American Diet Fad Revolution! ... The DVXUser Diet :D
