Any news on Barry's book for the 500?

Hey all,

This is my first post here, I took delivery of my 500 in October last year & have been using it very happily since.

P2 is affording me options that until now were just beyond our reach, both in terms of budget and time - we're running FCP, After Effects etc & now we can feed in DVC Pro HD, our clients are knocked out with the picture quality. We work on corporate productions here in the UK for large multi-nationals & organisations and I am keen to push the camera (and myself) to deliver the best possible quality.

I have read with interest that there are books and DVDs available for the 200 with versions for the 500 due out at some stage. Does anyone know the status on this? Failing that, how much of a crossover is there between the information on the 200 & that of the 500? Primarily I am interested in the cine-cam settings, with frame rates, shutter angles etc, so am I right to assume this is similar if not identical on both cameras?

Please excuse my niavety on the subject, this is the first time I have a 'decent' camera in my arsenal!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Martin.

After evaluating the market, I'm not going to do a separate HPX500 book. Too much time and effort for too small a market, with too many other projects currently going on, and the current HVX Book is about 90% applicable to the 500 anyway, so people have been ordering the HVX Book/HVX BootCamp DVDs and been content with that.

Primarily I am interested in the cine-cam settings, with frame rates, shutter angles etc, so am I right to assume this is similar if not identical on both cameras?
99.5% identical. Only real difference is that the master pedestal scale is more finely calibrated on the HPX500 (a lot more increments) and there are separate "color temp" settings for white balance channel A and B.

Barry, are you going to add a special HPX chapter to future editions of your HVX book?
Depends on what new comes out, but yes that's the plan. I updated the DVX Book for the DVX100A, and I'm assuming (maybe wrongly, but I'm assuming) that there'll eventually be an HVX200A and that the book will go through an update for that. And when that happens, I'll add some HPX500A-specific information. Or, if they announce some new camera in the HPX or HVX line next week, that's similar enough in function and operation to fit into the existing book, then that might be the trigger point for going in and revising the book.

Hello, can you please tell me if I want to get the best out of my HPX500 now will the HVX200 book help me, or is there other resources for the HPX500?

Thanks, Jane

dvxuser.com is a pretty hard to bet resource too :)

THe HVX200 book should definatly help you with the HPX500 ... what camera/s where you using previously?

Hi, the Sony Z1 and a DSR500 DVCAM before that. The HPX500 is a whole other world for me. Would be good to know how long before the revision happens.

Thanks, Jane

Jane,
If you are new to the P2 workflow, then Barry's book will be the best money you ever spend. Even if you buy the one for the 200 now and then buy the updated version later, you're still going to be money way ahead as compared to other resources.

Also, camp out here on this site and read, read, read. There are tons of valuable tips to be had here.

Please use the search feature, but don't be afraid to ask questions if you can't find what you're looking for.
