C100: Any experience with these lenses? 28-300mm 70-300mm 100-400mm

I've used the 70-200 with the 2X extender, it made the images surprisingly ugly and soft, and that was even on low res 1080 video. Have never tried the 1.4x but hopefully it is sharper than the 2x. I may buy the new 100-400 II, the IS is noticeably better than the old push pull 100-400. 28-300 is a consumer lens, questionable build quality for pro use. The 70-300 isn't bad. If you need the reach, the new 100-400 II is going to be the standard. 70-200 is good but if I needed more reach, I would buy the new lens and use either or both

I have the 28 -300mm lens, I use it mostly for events for when I'm stuck at the back of the room and have to shoot someone speaking at a podium. The lens allows me to get a good medium shot of the speaker and then pull out to wide shot from time to time to show the room. Things happen quickly at live events and I don't always have the time to switch out lenses.
Pro's: Being able to get a half decent wide shot and good telephoto without changing lenses.
Con's: Heavy, push zoom to change focal length, no constant aperture goes from 3.5 to 5.6., not great for handheld work.

Have you tested the new lens out? Or just read other rumblings about it.

How much do you hate / like the push / pull to zoom?

Thanks for the replies.

I was not happy with the performance of the 70-200 f2.8 L non IS lens and the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM (version 1) lenses with TCs. The version II ie. 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM with 2xII TC works well. I use it a lot with my C300.

I also own the EF 100-400 f3.5-5.6 L IS USM lens. It is a good lens. However, if I need a bit more focal length than 400mm and am forced to handhold, then mating a 1.4xTC with the 100-400 works. However, the quality drops slightly. So I prefer to use my Canon 400f2.8 IS lens with TCs and mount it on tripods for distant subjects.

I prefer the 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM with TC as that gives me constant aperture and good results while zooming in. I am likely to get the new 100-400 for the better IS and I hope it will be more useful with 1.4x TC than it is with the existing 100-400. Will test it whenever I can get one.

So if I were in your case, I would have bought a 100-400 f3.5-5.6 L IS II USM lens or the 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM with 2xIII TC. If the later, then obviously I would have sold off the existing non IS 70-200.

I'm don't like the push / pull to zoom. It's a lot more difficult to do a little push in or out with the push zoom. Once in a while it's nice to be able to quickly punch in and out or even just a small zoom in or out to reframe and it's not smooth with the push zoom. With my other lenses I can easily reframe and the repo is usable, with the push/pull zoom the reframe is never usable.

We've got a 100-400, used it on a C100 at an airshow. Needs a damn sturdy tripod, but it has IS which is useful. Great image quality, I prefer it for static shots as movement can quickly complicate things..

the 70-300L is a wonderfull lens and perfect if you need that extra bit of reach.
image quality is tack sharp and the "IS" is realy handy on the long shots.
If you don't mind pushing up the iso? the 3,5-5,6 fstop won't be a problem.

No, its not shipping yet, but I have used the older version. The new one is similar, just adds ring zoom and a much better IS system (1.5 stops on the old lens and 4 stops on the new one). Push pull zooms are awful for video shooting.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I've ruled out any push / pull & narrowed it down to the new 100-400mm if enough budget or the 70-300mm (or maybe the 70-300mm & another lens like the Sigma 18-35mm).

I had the 70-300 4.5-5.6 IS, this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/397663-USA/Canon_0345B002_EF_70_300mm_f_4_5_6_IS.html not the one you linked to. It was a really cheap lens that took okay images but it's construction was flimsy so I gave it to my father in law because he needed a longer lens. The white 70-300 you linked to, is pretty nice. I had a chance to try it out at a shoot in LA. Pretty solid offering, just wish it was faster but all of the zooms above the 70-200 are slow.

I have the 100-400L with my C100 and I love it. But, the range is not optimal for my use. I I were to do it again, I would by the 28-300L.
