C100: Any chance we'll get in body stabilization on the C100 Mark III?

Canon just put in body stabilization into the EOS M5, but it was left out of the C700. I'm assuming this means chances are slim that it would be in the C100 Mark III. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on if Canon would be putting in body IS in any future cameras that weren't mirrorless, including any in the 5D/1DX/1DC line. I would be so damn happy if it turned up in the C100 Mark III, but I'm not holding my breath.

Is it just easier to do this on mirrorless systems? I love my C100 and I'm looking forward to deciding on my upgrade path once the Mark III is announced, but renting Sony cameras with in body stabilization has me a little spoiled. Having said that, they have enough quirks that I don't really wanna switch over. I love shooting with my C100 and love the color, it's a system I've learned and I've become really confident with. If anything I may grab a GH5 along with (the supposed) C100 Mark III that will hopefully be coming this year.

Does anyone think there's any chance in hell the C100 Mark III with have in body IS?

No, I would be absolutely flabbergasted if they put that into the C100 MKIII. It would be totally out of character of them.

The IS in the M5 is software based. It's not IBIS where the chip is moved to compensate for the camera movement. It's not significantly different from doing IS in a NLE after the fact.

I have the M5 it's a great little camera.

Lens based optical IS with a newer model Canon lens on a C300/C100 is better than the software based IS in the M5.

They have digital stabilization in the XC10. It crops the image slightly and makes the image a bit worse. But the X100 will have a very different sensor and interchangeable lenses.

IF they use the same sensor as C300MK2 & C700 it has some look-around possibility, so possible to do without cropping sensor. BUT many lenses might have issues covering, so not necessarily something Canon would do on a C100 product.

Interesting. Didn't know that. I can definitely see the C100 III having built in digital stabilization if the sensor is at all capable in 1080p. It seems to bee a part of Canon's philosophy for lower end event cameras. The ef-s stm lenses already have really impressive IS built in, but it could be useful for low light fast prime work.

Especially since they have yet to develop any IBIS system in any camera. (Yet another reason why they need to start making good mirrorless cameras.) Extremely doubtful, but as long as the lens I'm using has IS, it's not too bad. I would love to have it on my 18-35 Sigma though.

Canon will not bring in any half-baked solutions to its cinema line. It was the pioneer in image stabilisation technology in its lenses. They are trying to make it better in each version. Infact the focus of Canon is in creating a cinema line of lenses with IS. The first of which was the CN-E 18-80 L IS.

If Canon brings out a solution ie stabilisation in body, then it has to complement the IS in its lenses and not make the IS redundant. One route can be putting another dedicated Digic chip in camera for computing the movement along with the IS and using some of the extra sensor real estate to come out with a stabilised output. That should take time. I have no knowledge on this and am writing this before my morning cup of tea. So add/remove some sugar to the above to sweeten it as per your taste. :)

Canon is the one manufacturer capable of creating some really interesting hybrid lenses that integrate really well with their cameras. No reason they shouldn't have fully integrated 'wireless' systems, that allow you to control the lenses through their EF mounts, especially if they embrace more of them being STM style lenses.

A problem with in-camera (sensor-based) stabilization is that it's difficult for the sensor to dissipate heat. Many people believe goose-down is what insulated you when the fact is, the goose-down is just good at maintaining its shape when moist--the air pockets are what keep the heat in. I'm not a professional, so I have no idea what pro cameras do, but I would think it mostly a consumer feature where short-video times are acceptable.

Another simple engineering problem is the more complex something is, the greater risk of it breaking. Sony isn't known for battle-hardened cameras, to put it mildly. In short, I can't see in-camera stabilization happening any time soon in the C100 line. As the other poster said, you can get it in-lens and of course, most would use a gimbal/steady-cam type setup if the need is great enough. A broken sensor is the last thing any person wants to deal with. I'd rather have my sensor screwed into my body than attached on little stepper motors.

I would guess that the C100 III will be 4K. I don't think it needs 4K, but Canon has to face some irrationality of the market, like when cinematographers take along their GH4s because they shoot 4k even though, next to a C100, they make people look like zombies, nice and crispy to be sure :)

Something that would guarantee me buying a c100 mkiii would be 2k 444. He'll I'd pay 5k for that. It's still not hurting the C300 mkii since it has 4k....

2k 444
Touchscreen dpaf
Selectable focus
Facetracking on prime stm lenses
Movable twisting grip like fs5 or xc10/15.

We have a WINRAR

Thanks for all the input everyone! I'm really hoping one gets announced too. The T7i specs just hit and it has 5 axis image stabilization, so maybe this signifies they'll at least put this into anything they can depending on the sensor. Having in-camera stabilization really is a game changer for me once I used it. I have a set of Rokinon Cine DS primes so they get a lot of use, and I only have the 24-105 that has IS so having it in camera would be much cheaper for me than getting an IS lens for each situation.

unfortunately that rumour spec says 'electronic image stabilization' which as Jon Roemer mentioned in post #3 is nowhere near as good as the IBIS you find in Olympus, Panasonic and Sony

As long as all of my IS lenses keep working, I don't care if they put in IBIS or electronic or none. It would be strategically unwise of them to put any kind of IBIS or electronic stabilization into any Cinema EOS body. Much of Canon's worldwide corporate income is derived from the sales of IS lenses. I am beginning to think that the C100 MKIII is going to be like the C100 MKII and MKI were, an entry level EOS body that does not step on the feature set of the next camera up in the line. Unfortunately this would mean that some of us would go through the same thing as many of us went through with the C100 MKI and MKII. Clients always ASK for the C300 and we have to sell them on why the C100 is just as able, lower rental cost to them, etc. I bought the C100 and teamed it with the Atomos Ninja Blade because Prores is better than the C300 MKIs internal codec, it also provides a better screen to focus with. But it's always an uphill battle and I did lose a few shoots in the past because the producer HAD to have a C300 and I didn't own one and they didn't want the C100, they acted as if I was trying to pull something sneaky in NOT shooting with the C300. It will probably be this same thing going forward, certain producers will still want you to own a C300 MKII. if you have a C100 MKIII and a Shogun Inferno or Odyssey, you'll still have to sell them that it's just as good, just that it cost $8k instead of $12k.

It should have 4k, doubtful it will have 4K 60p because the C300 MKII doesn't, but it's possible. The C100 MKII had 1080 60p when the C300 MKI only had 720 60P. It will have HDMI out, probably, not SDI, although they could go rogue and surprise us all with SDI outputs as well as HDMI. 2K 444? Hmm...that all ties in with the recording media. If they keep conservative, it will still be highly compressed entry level which would still be SDHC, SDCX cards like the Panasonic UX180 type cameras that shoot 4K. I can't imagine them putting CFAST into the C100 MKIII, but I guess it is possible. Look at the past, Canon most probably will not put on any significant features that step on or nullify any C300 MKII features, why would they? Unless they really blow us away and introduce the new C300 MKIII at the same time and tremendously up their game there? Canon always plays it conservative though, there is as much chance of a new C300 MKIII and a C100 MKIII at the same time as Donald Trump killing his Twitter account.
