C300: Any chance the C300 MKII can do 4k/60 with a future firmware upgrade?

cameras should be much better moving forward (like starting with the C200).

Still have to get those prices down though unless they are just looking to make pieces for museums.

Have you ever had the chance to use the C300MKII? I don't think the C200 is even close to the C300MKII for so many reasons.

I've had a chance to use almost every camera in the world, ha.

Totally hear you and respect your opinion (everyone's opinion). I used the camera back in 2016 a few times, and I don't think it's anything special over the C200, although I do like how the buttons light up.

If you need high-quality HD or 10-bit recording or proper timecode, etc. I hear you loud and clear, but I would choose the C200 any day for my own work. And I always thought the camera was insanely overpriced when it was released and it's still way too much for what it offers in 2018.

I shoot with both cameras side by side quite a bit. I agree with NorBro, sorry C300 MKII owners, if you compare Apples to Apples, Cinema RAW Light looks better than the XF-AVC at 405 Mbps. Not to mention the superior ergonomics. If people would look at the C200 as Canon intended, as a Cinema RAW Light camera at a cheap price point that also happens to shoot proxies, they'd see what an amazing value it is. It was never intended to go head to head against the C300 MKII. But for long form broadcast types of shoots that cannot support Cinema RAW Light, the C300 MKII is still a better tool, even with the infernal clamshell and awful AV cables hanging off the side.

One of the worst and most annoying things I think any camera has ever had...just beyond dumb, ha.

IMO, I always wanted the C200's XLRs and the C100's LCD on the body. No cables!

I far prefer the external audio and video. For example, today I put the camera on a second shooter slider and put the monitor on a stationary arm. I regularly put the monitor on an arm off of the camera so that I can get it positioned where I want it and change settings without touching the camera while rolling. I use the monitor on a gimbal. I regularly change the monitor location depending on how I'm using the camera. Sometimes I just leave it off. I also use the touch screen monitor with the C300 II and have the smaller audio unit if I need it. I also use a helmet with a bunch of mounting points and I almost never use the top handle on the camera despite having a quick releaste NATO handle setup.

Frankly, I agree that the handle and clamshell design is not ideal for the C300 II. It sucks. Luckily, the fact that the audio and video is not directly connected to the camera means that I don't have to use it in that configuration.

It's workable, it's just a clunky, bad design. Depending on how I use the C300 MKII, it can be a huge bother or a non-issue. C200 ergos are much better though, I bet the C300 MKIII will be a lot like the C200 as far as layout.

Ha, ha! It feels like it's overdue, maybe NAB next Spring or CineGear?

Yup and I bet it'll do higher than 4k (maybe 6k) at 60+ fps in CRL or ProresRAW (longshot on the prores) with the all-important broadcast codec. Canon's biggest problem with a potential mkIII is not making the C700 irrelevant, but being clearly better than a C200. It actually sounds like that will be difficult to do...

All they would need to do is a put a full frame sensor in the camera and you would have your new MKIII. And that wouldn't make the C700 irrelevant unless you already assume that the C700 is irrelevant due to it's price bracket. The c700 is a different market.

C300 MKIII
Keep the 10-bit 4:2:2 codec
Keep the second CFast slot so you can dual and relay record CRL
Keep TC and genlock
6K imager, S35 would still sell fine to this market, hardly anyone needs FF
How about something fun like four full sized XLR audio inputs, nobody else has that.
The smart move would be to make it $10k to $12k out of the gate instead of $16k that they usually do.
The other smart move that would differentiate it from the C200, make it a small, lighter version of the C700/FF shoulder mounted form factor, bag the stupid still camera form factor. Of course that would make it hard to mount on a gimbal though.

Wireless LCD screen...

C300MkIII
Form factor between C200 and C700
RAWlite
60/4K in all formats
120 fps 4K in full sensor RAW lite
integrated touch screen LCD- C100, Ursa Mini Pro- there are other designs
built in wi-fi / bluetooth
wireless video monitoring- greatly improve on WFT-E8A functionality (built in of course)
cinema style positive lock EF mount- standard
greatly improve highlight DR in an "out of the camera" mode (Sony FS5M2 "venice" emulation). A lot of clients would prefer straight out of camera image.
"smarter" autofocus
Keep it as light as possible.
Integrated baseplate, or factory designed baseplate ala Wooden Camera Unified.
Quick release top handle option
wireless audio integration, option.
brick battery option

Fun...

I do not think it means what you think it means.

BTW why didn't those mini-XLR inputs ever take off?

You're not as much of an audio nerd as I am. I miss four XLR inputs like some of the Betacams had. Very handy for EPK/corporate kind of stuff when there isn't budget for a sound mixer. Mini XLR never took off because you have to have a dorky adapter cable hanging there to plug in full sized XLRs.

I like how you think Karl, these are all good. I doubt we'll get many of them but one can wish!

I don't think Canon is going to start decreasing the photosite size on their Cinema Camera sensors in order to increase the resolution. I think they will follow Arri on that. Personally, I prefer high ISO performance over resolution at lower ISO's for the work I do. From my understanding, sensors have hit their size vs ISO performance vs DR limit due to photon shot noise. In any case, Canon has a bunch of full frame lenses they would like to sell

Eh, as long as they don't go with lemo for sound input then I will be happy.
