Any camera "hackable"

Hi to all
I don't know if this is a good place to place my post, but could not find any particular. Moderators please feel free to move it to a proper place.

What I am going to do is to find some camcorder or a mirror-less camera capable of video recording, that I would modify ("hack") to become an interchangeable lenses camera for using it with 35mm photography lenses. Camera for less than 1000 USD.

The idea comes from the fact, that everything that could be done in lenses/optics design, has been already done about 30 years ago (just to mention Leica, Nikkor, SMC Pentax lenses). Now we witness a very fast development of electronics and digital image processing as never before! Therefore putting together todays electronic and old lenses brings the best results (image quality) in video recording. My goal is to achieve that quality at as low costs as possible. So what we need is the camcorder or any camera with image sensor placed relatively close to the front of the camera. The closer - the better, because of so called "focal flange" (simply: distance from the back of the lens to the sensor surface). Focal flanges of the typical 35mm photography lenses are in a range from 40mm to 55mm, so any camera that has a sensor placed less then 40mm off the front (off the filter thread) may suit. Ideally would be at about 20mm distance, leaving enough space for using a mount adapter (like any of the Nex). Other key requirements for the camera features are as follows:
- HD video, 720 lines/pixels vertically at least
- sensor 1/3 or 1/2 inch, 3-4Mpix or more (but not too much)
- frame rate 30p at least or 60i - but real!
- exposure lock and exposure correction
- aperture or shutter speed manual control
- zebra and some manual focus aid would be well seen

Is there any camcorder on the market of that kind for less than 1K USD? I was trying to do that with Canon HV20/30 but sensor is deeply recessed into the body, leaving no space for any lens adapter.

What is the point? You can already get a dslr for under a grand, so why bother with a hack at less quality for more work? 1/3" to 1/2" sensor isn't going to get you the shallow depth that I assume you are after. Otherwise, what would be the point? Still photo lenses on a 1/2" chip will only introduce breathing and other issues associated with using still lenses. If you want the kind of DOF associated with 1/2", get a Sony ex1. The lens on it is great and no duct tape required. If you want better glass, get an ex-3 and a set of zeiss digiprimes.

If you hate dslrs (like me), pony up the dough and get a panny af100. Use virtually any lens and get shallow DOF.

Thanks for your advices but Sony Ex does not fit in a 1000$ budget. My fault was that I just forgot to mention that I am not really after a shallow dof, but after a very long reach (or focal length). With 1/3'' sensor a 100mm lens will become an extreme telephoto that I need for shooting wildlife. So use of exchangeable photography lenses is a priority but I don't like dslrs for making videos.

Have you looked into the GH2 tele extender mode? It crops the sensor to around 1/2" (1080p) and offers a huge reach. If I remember rightly... a 200mm lens, in 1080p tele mode, hits around 1600mm

Here is a good example:

For what you seek, the GH2 is probably the best and least expensive option. It has an electronic viewfinder like a video camera, not a reflex mirror system. It can also easily adapt to just about any still lens format as long as you don't care about automatic lens controls. Any mounts or accessories you buy for it can be used with an AF100 or other Panasonic m/43 video camera that comes down the pike by the time you can afford something better. Nice little camera. No hacks required that might turn your investment into a pile of junk.

Yeah, GH2 looks very promising! Thank you guys, I am reading now everything I can find about it. Are there any adapters available for still legacy lenses, Pentax mount preferably?

Guys, does GH2 or GH1 have any aid like zebra or focus assist in video mode? And how about iso limit in movie mode? In manual it is unclear...

All right guys - you've made my mind. I am going to buy GH2 tomorrow!
So I will be thanking you or I'll be cursing you... :)
