Help! Best noise reduction for FCP?

Hey,

I've got a few problem shots that were underexposed on the HVX-200 camera, and when boosting the mids and highs back up to normal with a Color Corrector filter the shots get very noisy.

I'm on FCP 6, and I've tried the Nattress G DVNR filter, and the RE: Vision DeNoise, which seem to work OK, but not too great.

Might it help significantly if I worked in Color with the new Nattress G Smart DeNoise reduction filter?

Does anyone have a favorite filter to lessen noise? Please share your settings too.

And are there any filters I could apply selectively; ie. not to skin tones but to other chroma/luma values, so faces stay sharp?

Are there any software filters I could apply with a 'power windows'-type zone cut out? That might be another way I could apply the effect to everything but my interviewee's face.

It is my experience that you really can't do much about noise in compressed formats like HDV and DVCPRO HD. Denoise just seems to make it soft and not much else.

You could apply a denoise filter to the clip in FCP and then put a clean version on the layer above and use a mask filter with some soft edges to so that only the subjects face shows on the top layer. You could also do this in Aftereffects if you want a tighter mask.

Hope that helps

There's a demo of the Nattress Denoise filter for Color on his website, which you can download to try this for yourself. The filter has an edge preservation feature, which may address Steve's concern about such filters merely softening the image.

Color's Secondaries Window allows corrections to be applied selectively, has power windows, etc., that you asked about. It could be worthwhile for you to spend some time with that application for your purposes.
