FS7: another Sony Look or not thread

Which ones are Cine EI Slog3 or Custom & what gamma? Also which shots display the dreaded nuclear Sony look?
Shots have been color corrected to look similar in FCP 7 . Sorry they all look a bit darker than they did in my home monitor .
Remember - Custom Slog3 is also a possibility .
The woman was shot with the same lighting same day. The 2 shots of the man were shot on different days with similar lighting but levels , back light etc could be different.

Not sure what Gammas and modes but of the repeatable shot (women holding the chart) I like the 1st one best then 3rd one. The 2nd one is terrible. What mode is that?

I just added the note that Custom could be Custom SLog3 ... perhaps?
btw - no power windows used in correction - pretty basic stuff .

Very curious why you'd start a new thread for that?

The other thread was long in the tooth and people might be bored with where it was going . These are different pics so I figured it might get more fresh views .
Gonna take a stab at it ?

His face looks "baked", as if it was exposed to too much sun and/or had spent too much time in the tanning booth and was thus unnaturally and excessively tanned. I suppose some makeup artists favor it for some of their clients. I have seen several actors/celebrities (unfortunately) wearing it immediately after coming off a set and, in person, it looks very odd. However, if someone filmed such a face, then it could look like that third shot and so it would not be due to the color science of a given camera.

Actually it might be my color correction trying to match the other shot - particularly because it's darker on the web . I'll give it another shot & you can see if it's still baked . What about the others - no guesses?

This is lightened up a bit. Hard to adjust it because the web is darker or perhaps has a more contrasty gamma. . Could also be him sweating through the cheap powder I gave him. Or maybe it is the camera setting? This is closer to how it looked on my Apple Thunderbolt Display

I'd say the first one's Cine the second is custom. The next two are difficult to compare due to different angles and subjects. I'd say the second guy shot is Cine EI and the first is custom.

Me too.

I like this kind of polls. Only next time try to make the shots in the exact conditions. Custom and Cine, makes comparison better.

No one has Yet commented on whether any of the custom examples ( if there are any ) typify the "nuclear " horrendous Sony look and flesh tone . It should stand out like a sore thumb right ? Please include if you see this . of course it may not all be Sony

Why grade them though Lenny? Doesn't that sort of prove that the Sony look out of camera needs grading as to not look a certain way we're trying to avoid? Put LC709A for slog2/sgamut and LC709A for slog3/sgamut3.cine on the images and repeat the comparison.

Ok but if I had to guess the first two of the woman are slog and the third one of the woman is custom mode with HG.

I'd guess the two shots of the man were not even shot on a recent Sony camera.

As for "nuclear" I feel the scene of the woman doesn't really have enough color variation to exhibit what some would consider nuclear. You can see it in the three color swatches pretty easily but not in the rest of the image because the colours are skin, wood, and white walls. Go to a shopping mall, car dealership, or somewhere there is more color variation and it would be a bit more obvious.

Cheers,

I graded about what I typically would on any shoot . Nothing dramatic . Maybe graded is too strong a word . I wanted them similar enough so that slight differences in color balance wouldn't matter .

I've always been interested mostly in how people and flesh tones are depicted and unless I'm mistaken there has been plenty of discussion about that alone being a big part of the dread Sony look . it shouldn't be something a minor correction would change . You don't want to look at SLog straight out of the camera and even adding a LUt would entail other basic adjustment .

Re - " nuclear" needing a car dealership or something with a lot more color . lots of people have also condemned it's horrible plastic flesh tones . I'll say more later but first want to get more responses . Have 1 or 2 other tests as well .

The last three have the typical nuclear top-end that you see with the dreaded Hypergammas. Highlight rolloff in the first two is notably smoother, though the colours are majorly skewed between the two.

I'd guess that the last three are custom mode, and the first two are a mix of the modes, with one being Custom/Slog and the other CineEI/Slog (though I couldn't say which is which).

At risk of sounding like an ass, the skin tones and skin rendition on the woman are really awful. Well at least I don't like them. They look nothing like the male images. The image of the woman to me seem so wooden, crunchy gradations, plastic skin, sony look.

I'm again very sorry to knock your work.
