GH4 Another "Sexy Beast" Lens : Olympus 40-150 f/2.8 to Ship in November for $1499

Well, the explanation from Panasonic was that due to cooling requirements IBIS isn't possible. I'm not sure I'm going to believe that 100% since on the one hand charging extra of OIS in lens is not a bad thing for them, but then again making a lens simpler to produce isn't a bad thing either. I do know that extreme cases like the BMPCC with its active cooling means IBIS is definitely out.

So when you click the link to B&H the lens shown looks considerably different than what was posted. Was the OP's image like an early mockup?

No, the difference is the picture I posted has the retractable lens-hood installed, where the B&H Photo is the same lens without the hood. ( the lens comes with this hood and a storage case )

I see no reason to not store the lens with the hood on all the time.

I was going tp[ purchase the 35-100 but heard reports of 'micro-jitters' with the OIS - how's yours?

It does have slow moving micro-jitters that aren't too bad as long as you don't shoot in ETC mode. Hopefully Panasonic will fix this with a firmware upgrade like they did for the 12-35mm lens.

Ahhh I see now, I should have noticed that. Thank you for the clarification!

Is the lens really that heavy to require a tripod mount? I believe I have used much heavier FD lenses on my GH cameras than this lens. Anybody know how that tripod mount will get in the way of rails and cages? Does it come off for those of us who use rails with a lens support?

Mounting the lens to my support systems could be a major pain when I need to swap lenses. Something I'm sure the event video people are not taking into consideration. Forget about quickly swapping lenses. I hope I'm wrong but I just don't have enough experience with lenses that require mounting to a tripod via the lens and not the body.

If this thing is parfocal I'm in!

I was playing with this Olympus lens today at the Vistek Pro-Fusion Video Show in Toronto. It's a gorgeous lens and not really very heavy considering the range it covers.

The Olympus rep stated that the 40-150mm f/2.8 lens is parfocal, and from my brief hand-held tests it does appear to hold focus throughout the zoom range.

Also, there was no aperture flicker as I zoomed from wide to tele and back again, so it looks like this will be a very usable lens for video.

The Olympus rep said that this lens will be in stores around the middle of November.

...I have to write Santa right away so he will know what I want for Xmas this year. :-)

TheDingo. I really wish this wasn't the case because now I have to get this lens!

I want a broadcast style zoom in the native MFT format. I dont care how big it is it would be amazing to go from 12-200 (MFT format) at f2.8. Maybe it's just me but that lens would never come off the GH4
Agreed. 12-200mm f/2.8 parfocal zoom with a broadcast style servo zoom handle, fast autofocus and OIS would be amazing. It would also likely be 25 lbs. and cost $30K, but I'd sell my kidney for it...

I bought, and immediately returned, the Panasonic 35-100mm due to the horrid OIS for handheld video work. If I have to shoot with sticks, the 40-150mm is appealing as it has longer reach for the same price as the 35-100mm. Maybe the popularity of the Olympus lens will convince Panasonic to reconsider fixing their 35-100mm lens.
