Another HVX Review

Bob has delivered it up clear and simple. I do miss the science bob but maybe this forum is rubbing off on bob. I too have been saved and converted upon viewing this camera on an HD monitor with two kino's and a 350. Amazing!

While you guys are digging deep into some hidden agenda in my post, notice I used my full name and place of residence.

A tad defensive aren't we? An innocent man has a clear conscience.

I suppose you'll try and say it's mere coincidence that "Simi" and "Sony" both have four letters and start with the letter S.

Why don't you just admit you're a Sony rep? We're so on to you Lazur. Give it up.

I thought that the Sony camera out performed the HVX, even though it was shooting on tape. We shot a music video a few weeks earlier with the Sony and I was very surprised and how well it performed. <http://www.plumwerks.com/secret/video/introduction.html>.

I watched the music video, Steve. It looked very cool. I liked the lighting and the inventive camera moves. What did you use to make the camera turn/spin? I also liked the look of the wardrobe, props (including the clever use of clothes pins) and the mood created by the band. It kind of reminded me of Tim Burton?

I was not crazy about the motion of the video. I think that interlaced video looks a little cheap (I'm not attacking you, I'm just commenting on how I feel about interlaced video versus progressive video). What's your take on that?

I've rented the Sony camera and the images are very clean and of course look great on a HD TV, but more of a TV look, rather than the magical look of film. That's why I'm going with the HVX200 (including variable frame rates and DVCPRO HD -- which holds up well on quick camera moves and action). When I used the Sony, it didn't handle motion well.

Thanks for the comments on the video.

We're all proud of that video. The musician came to my friend and asked him what he thought about doing a music video. My friend rounded everyone up including a Dp and costumer. No one was paid. It was shot on one day in about 12 hours for 60 bucks. That was the price of lunch. The Sony was chosen because it was free. I work as a machinist and built a steadicam, dolly-crane, barrelroll attachment as well as other items. For some shots we had a video projector, projecting patterns over the musicians. Maybe that was what you were seeing in some shots. It is small so it is hard to tell. But yes, give me 1080 progressive.

Please guys, I don't work for Sony. I just think it's a good camera for the price.

Steve, didn't I see you coming out of the Sony building the other day... just kidding...

Actually I'd like to see your dolly-crane with the barrel roll... if you could post stills of that in another thread that would be interesting...

Thanks Gary

ok, here goes. after reading all the bru-ha-ha, the pros and cons about the hvx200, i finally got to play with one at evs and here is my take. my purpose for this camera is a little different from most people on this post, (i think). i was very interested in how the dv50 24p looked. and i can tell you, according to what my eyes saw, it is the best bleep-bleeping sd picture i have ever seen in a camera of this size and price. now remember, i'm not talking shooting in hd and downconverting...i'm talking shoot-edit-dvd all in dv50, you will not believe this picture. and i was looking for the noise, really couldn't see it. and this was in available light in the evs showroom. i don't think the average joe looking at the dvd will notice. probably because his jaw is on the floor from looking at the picture.
and btw, i got to play with the jvc hd100. i'll tell you what, nice bleeping camera. for right now i'm turning my z1 and pd 150 in for the jvc because i can get that one now. i want my progressive 24p and 30p back. saw the sd 24p picture on the jvc and for my money, i'll take it over the dvx, with all it's quirks. now when my tax return comes back, i might just keep the jvc and buy the hvx outright. but to recap, i really love the hvx, and i'm starting to love the jvc.
just a side note...hsr has 2 jvc's for rentals and i was told that as soon as one comes in, it goes right back out. they can't keep them in long enough to fully charge the batteries.
just my opinion guys.

Maurice,

Were you viewing the HVX200 playback on the camera or via external monitor?

thxs, Steve

it was on a panasonic hd for 720p footage. awsome picture in dv50.
oops, my bad. external monitor.

Steve,

Great looking video BTW. Amazing even if it is on the sony.. JK. The camera rolls and the wide angle moves on the instruments look rock solid. For a day and 60 bucks, I'd say they got a hell of a deal. I'd also say that the blacks look nice and rich and dark...

I would recommend to anyone who was interested in the HVX200 not to jump in but to rent one and see if it meets your needs. Me, I'm going to keep dreaming about a 2/3 inch chip camera that I could afford and maybe pick up a Sony FX-1 to play around with.

I’ve been reading DVX User.com for some time now in anticipation of this Panasonic camera. Thanks to all that have kept me up to date. I hope this post helps someone.
It helps! Thanks for your sincere report, Steve, very very useful. And REAL brand agnostic, as well. Congrats!

I'm grateful!
Emanuel
