An article in PDN (Photo District News) about d90 and dSLR's

I read about this one in the new issue of videography online, from an article in Photo District News--

PDN article--

Discusses the use of the d90 and the 5DMkII by still photogs to add video into their mix. Another reason why it will be Nikon or Canon with a pro dSLR that will bring us what we need--not the prosumer GH1 4/3rds style cams.

An interesting article and a well done d90 video by a pro photographer.

I don't know, I think what it shows is that people with talent will make whatever tool they have work for them. This guy is a pro, and I know it's not the camera that's making him look this good. Give him a GH1 and he'd do the same. Talent over tools.

My point is that the pressure to provide full professional control and codecs on a dSLR will come from the high-end pro still photogs that are getting into providing video footage along with their stills for assignments. Theses are the guys who Nikon and Canon will pay more attention to than most of us on the dvx forums.

Oh okay, I thought your point was that it would be Nikon (who doesn't even need video to sell cameras to a mass market) or Canon (who doesn't want to cannibalize what video they do have installed, obviously) that will bring you a Pro DSLR with video additions-- not the prosumer GH-1 4/3rds Style Cameras.

Since your last like ten posts are missions AGAINST the GH-1 specifically, I thought that's what you meant. It makes a lot of sense, though, what' you're campaigning.

But now that I know you're saying that it will be professional photographers that will be the ones that these two companies listen too, I can get behind that mission as well.

Oh wait, Canon already has manual controls floating around, and they aren't giving them to you.

Oh... and wait... I guess the GH-1 already has full manual controls... stupid prosumer 4/3rds style cams. Gahd.

Did I miss something??

I am on a mission against the GH-1? I'm campaigning? Just trying to put things into perspective for those that seemed to think that the GH-1 is the ultimate in motion picture cameras.

It really isn't personal (Though I guess some think it is)!!

Thanks for putting things into perspective, Robert Altman. I see the light: a 4/3" 16:9 sensor'd camera with manual controls, a host of other abilities is inferior to other productions with larger sensors, no manual controls and their own set of limitations.

You're on the right track. We applaud you.

I'm about to put my GH-1 up for sale and go back to the D90. Dunno what I was thinking.

That was a pretty ignorant reply. The point he's making is that the gh1 is a really nice video camera (not great mind you) but it won't make any still photographers choose it over the nikon and canon, even if they're thinking of starting incorporating video in their work, and the slr market is driven by photographers, that's what he's saying. Right? Whether you like either or not is beside the point.

Thank you!

My point with this thread was the interesting coverage in a pro STILL photographer zine--and how that may put pressure on Nikon/Canon.

Exactly - second that. I´ve made some similar comments in this posting here (but in another context):
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1644700&postcount=256

For some professional photographers the video feature will be a welcome opportunity to expand their range. But they used in the past Canon or Nikon and they´ll do it in the future, no doubt at all.
And if they read something like that, they have had enough (concerns mainly the photo part):
http://lemon.soju.co.uk/g1/why-i-returned-my-dmc-gh1/
"However I soon found that my GH1 had a problem - it would occasionally give false focus confirmation: the camera would report back that it had achieved focus but the resulting image would be out of focus. This happened both in spot focus mode and when the camera selected the focus points."

And for fashion and stillife photographers i.e. video isn´t relevant on the present time. Maybe in some years. Now, they need "toys" like this Hasselblad:
http://www.hasselbladusa.com/products/h-system/h3dii-50.aspx

That doesn´t mean, that the GH1 isn´t a real good opportunity for indie filmmakers. Like Isaac said "
people with talent will make whatever tool they have work for them". And this tiny pana offers a lot, that most of us have wanted. For me personally of course in the next Nikon, no doubt. But if Nikon totally fails, let´s see...

This got me thinking...

Who is Panasonic targeting with the GH1? I can't imagine they are going after the photographers? So are they going after people who are shooting video with DSRL's but want more control and not getting it from Canon or Nikon?

If this is true, maybe Panasonic is getting into the game early to try to steal the market from the others...eventhough there is some talk about the low bitrate, artifacts at 1080p and all the rest. Heck it convinced me to dish out $1,600.00 and pre-order one eventhough I am totally happy with my d90 and the images it is giving me. Call me crazy, but the d90 with all it's flaws has convinced me that this is the way to go...(for me)

I have yet to see any indoor (or outdoor non flowers) video from the GH-1 that even approaches the film-like color of the d90 or the Canon. Even your "thrift store" short Kholi looks like just a video with dof and you are a pro! Honestly, my $150 kodak m0133 hd720 has better color saturation than the gh-1!

I was sooo excited to buy the Gh-1 because of all of the horror stories I have heard about the d90. But the GH just doesn't have that "film look" that I am looking for. So I guess I will wait for updates from Nikon or I might have to just deal with the hassle of the d90.

I have been lurking this forum for a while and have seen almost all of the gh videos and I am really not impressed (even phillip blloom's desert and kuai shorts were color corrected and filtered out extensively and still look like video!) If you disagree, please prove me wrong and post or list some videos you feel are as nice as the d90's.

Robert I agree and I am an example of what you are saying. I shoot with a pair of D3's and all pro Nikon glass. I use to work in the TV industry in the 80's and now looking to start doing more video work as well.

I have been watching the market for some time and interested in a HPX170 but if Nikon were to come out with a D-700x that had a full frame sensor and shot 1080p video I would buy one in a heart beat.

I will have to respectfully disagree. I do own a d90 and I have downloaded some of the GH1 videos and watch them on a monitor and they look as "filmic" as the d90. I have to agree that the colors coming from the Panasonic are not as warm, but regardless it has a nice look to it.

I downloaded the "Thrift Store" film and watched it on my NTSC monitor and it looks gorgeous. The "Thrift Store" film convinced me right there and then to pre-order my GH1...yeah, I might be crazy because I was about to put my order for the Canon 5D MKII.

I will prefer any day controls over workflow.....There is always a workaround for workflow and companies such as Apple or other editing companies are always quick to come with solutions for that. On the contrary, I might grow old waiting for controls from the Canon or Nikon....

welcome to the boards. I think... anyway

A) GH-1 hasn't hit stateside yet. When it does, there will be more footage up. Let's be realistic: stateside is where the magic will happen.

B) D90 doesn't look like film to me. The only one that does have film-like quality to me is the MKii, and that's because it resolves much more, or seems to, than either of these cameras. The D90 looks like DVX footage with interchangeable lenses, uprezzed to 720, the GH-1 looks like EX-1 footage with interchangeable lenses and the MKii looks like RED footage @ 1080.

C) Please remember we live in a digital age. Just about everything in your life can be customized, that goes for camera settings as well. I prefer to shoot desaturated or slightly desaturated. Oversaturation is a bit amateurish to me, personally. My favorite movies were never oversaturated, and had somewhat muted palletes. Disney movies, that's what Oversaturation reminds me of. Secondly, dealing with Skin Tones and Digital Medium is an outright headache. Getting proper skintones is of utmost importance to me, and I find it easier to do that if I shoot with a slightly muted pallet to begin with.

There's a D90 movie trailer floating around, the guys skin is yellow-orange. I dont' know why, but that doesn't look right to me. With the GH-1 I can get accurate color and quite easily, surprisingly.

Lastly, use what you want. I think you may be mistaken about my involvement in this thread: Every time I see Robert post it's something negative, specifically, about 4/3" Sensors. LoL

And he started this thread with it, then bumped it because nobody responded.

I really think you should just shoot with whatever camera allows you to shoot. Or what limitations you're willing to work under.

None of the three out are perfect, quite far from it. I could easily drop a Pro and Con list and you'd be able to visualize it much more so.

For me, right now, the GH-1 is the best all around camera. Doesn't mean it's the best all around image (coughMKiiCough) but it's the best production camera to me right now.

Anyway, I'll let Robert continue.

PS-- Super8 has it right. The real way to watch footage is on an actual television.

LOL that's not what I meant. Just that there seems to be a higher concentration of indie filmmakers or wanna-be's like me here in the US. So we're more than likely to actually shoot something controlled.
