Another C5DMII Project

Was that shot 30p? Has a video look to it... or I guess I should say a distinctly non-filmic look to it.

Didnt think it was too bad. Sound quality was good. I liked the key lighting, seemed to have lots of spill about though. There was no backlighting, which would add more dimension. The old guy was rather flat. But overall Id say a fairly good choice of shots.

Thank you for your comments.

@Max.
Yes, 30fps. This was a few weeks before the 24fps update, so we had to roll with 30fps.

@Noel.
Thank you. I'll take not too bad. :)
It was my first attempt at lighting and I know I have a ton to learn. The spec commercial shows that as well. First time with the Canon DSLR's too, so it was a great learning experience all around. I have to work on that backlighting.

Thank you both for watching.

I think it was a combination of dull lighting and poor acting. People don't have goofy smirks on their faces like that in real life. It seems like most indie productions like this suffer from over acting. Watch the film "The Cutting Edge". It's a great documentary about editing and there's one particularly good section where the have a completely striaght-faced guy (not acting at all) and the editor pulls various emotions out of the actor by cutting it different ways. It's good stuff.

Thank you for your comments, but I'd have to respectfully disagree about the acting. Those that have seen this that are working have said great things about the performance. I will admit tho, the lighting could definitely be better. I need to work on that, but for my first time, I'd say it's a good start.

That's fair... Acting is mostly subjective anyways. On second thought it might be the writing... For example the line "Face it. It's over. You're caught." is just not believable. People don't speak like this in real life. This is how something may be written in a novel, but generally, people don't speak that cleanly and in complete sentences. This is why porno dialog is so bad.

Think of white rapper vs. black rapper. The stereotypical "white" rapper cleanly recites lines with rigid rhythm as if they're reading out of a book. Black rappers slur, speak in run-on's, mispronounce, ect. and it sounds good (again, subjective to weather or not you like rap). It's sounds like they're talking to someone and not just reciting lines. They probably failed english class, but they're rich now.

I've heard on numerous occasions people working on student films say things like "hey, I've got an english major friend. He could help us write a script!" BAD F-ING IDEA! An english major is the last person you want working on a script. They'll butcher the F out of it. They'll write it like an book, they'll fallow rules. What you want is a drunk pissed off person to write for you. They'll write like how people talk.

again this is all subjective. I really don't have any credentials to speak off to back my argument... these are just my observations.

Thank you for your outlook on this. As it was a reel piece and I was locked in to doing the scene a certain way, it might have guided my writing a bit. I don't really consider myself a writer, but necessity dictates that I do my best at it. :)

No, I was purely talking about the 'look.' If the exact same sequence was shot on film, even 16mm- same ligths, same actors, everything- it would have a different look to it.

24p isn't perfect, but does capture that elusive film look better.
