FS7: Another Baseplate/Shoulder pad/Rig thread for FS7 thread

I've just received the baseplate from Westside AV

The plus is that its simple, relatively inexpensive and does what I want - a relatively lightweight solution that gives me rails and a shoulder pad. The shoulderpad could be more comfortable and the forward back position has its pros and cons. t feels like a good compromise though. Worked for me with the Sony VF all the way forward. I have no interest in the Zacuto VF as I can never get the Zacutos to focus right - maybe its my progressive lenses.

I shot some handheld yesterday and it was easy and fast to work with and it felt balanced enough on my shoulder but I only had a canon 24-105 on the cam. Not completely centered like the Zacuto but that has its issues also. The more you put on those rails though any of these rigs is probably going to end up front heavy. I'll just add a monopod connected to the rails with a quick release for that.

I just use a Giottos quick release so it was easy to put a plate on the bottom.

Very much interested in Olofs solution. Can you post pictures with the 24-105?

I don't have the 24-105 Canon any more, but here are photos of the Canon 24-70 f2.8. I am just completing a Metabones foot that fastens quickly and will also work with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 foot, in these photos you see a standard lens support that works great as well. These are w/o matte box but with the Odyssey on my Odyssey mounting kit. I will also have the rear hook for VCT14 with 15mm rail clamps option ready to ship next week.

I'm not happy with my Titla cage rig. The front cage portion doesn't sit flush against the body, due to it attaching to the baseplate on the bottom jutting out a few millimeters. This applies outward pressure on two of my lens adapters' foot supports (Metabones and Commlite), which I worry may cause the E-mount to flex and go out of alignment.
Beyond that, the rear V-mount plate only has one DTap, which is used for to power the camera body. There are additional 5, 8, and 12V barrel connectors, but they don't do me much good as I have DTap cables for any monitor or transmitter accessories. The one barrel connector I can use is the 12V, which powers my Atoms Shogun.

Too much hassle to ship back to Hong Kong. Would anyone like mine?

Is it necessary to put a mount under a 70-200/2.8? I don't on my Canon cameras. My Metabones adapter arrives soon, along with an FS7. Do I need to factor in additional under-lens support (I'd rather not) or is the Metabones Ultra strong enough without?

TIA,

Ben.

David,

You want an Anton Baurer Multi Tap as a first measure and some reasonably priced custom cables. Try Media Blackout on the net. Also take the allen key that came with your Metabones unit and remove the foot. Don't know about the Commlite.

You need support. With that said, I'm rigging something off my Wooden Camera Handle that will support the 70-200 from the handle, so you won't need rods. I did something very similar on the FS700 and it works great and perfect for run and gun because you can use the lens without a rod and plate setup. I'll post pics or PM me.

Sorry about the Tilta not working out. Looked like it could have been an economical solution. I am having a serious case of product paralysis over which baseplate I actually want for myself. Hopefully as they become more available, I'll be able to get a few different ones for review and then after I write the article decide which one i'm going to buy.

Thanks Gene.

Please post pics - I'm sure it will be of benefit to others too.

Cheers,

Ben.

As I mentioned in the above post, an A/B MultiTap and removing the foot from his lens adapters would solve the problems initially and he could get some custom cables made to utilize the other outputs. Not a biggie. I would also get a proper lens support device that attaches to the rods for the heavier lenses. Removing the Metabones foot, zero cost. Buying a Multitap, $60 plus shipping. Every Anton Bauer based system operator should have at least one Multitap in their kit, if not more along with a set of P-Tap based cables to deal with accessories (AKS) that are thrown at them.
