Annoying freakin problem with color2?

Basically after sending my final clips from final cut to color and once graded, when exported back to Final cut pro, I keep getting these gaps in between some of the clips. What the heck is going on? The frame rates, settings are the exact same but when exported back to final, every few clips would leave a gap. wtf? The music video and golor grading is perfect but now the new color in final cut have gaps plus several of the clips are playing really choppy. Is this a bug? We have a screening for the client Sat and I don't know what to do. My brain hurts and I'm probably going to loose this job. :(

can anyone help? thanks!!!

Has your FCP timeline been properly prepped for Color? Color doesn't like GOP codecs (HDV, XCDCAM, etc.,.) stills, freeze frames, gfx, speed changes, etc.,.

well, our primary codec we're using is AJA kona 720p 59.97fps. Is AJA the problem? The guys at apple never told us this.. So you're telling me 10 grand worth of HD hardware and color don't support it? wacked!

I had this problem also.

I dont know if this is the correct way of solving the problem but it worked for me.

In one of the first rooms (tabs) in color there is an option to add handles to your exported clips i just added 2fames.
Then once it came back into final cut there was no more empty frames.

Hope this helps
Dont have color on the machine i am working on at the moment or i would be able to tell you exactly where it is.

You may have to "prebake"* some of the clips before sending the entire seq to Color. Color doesn't like speed changes at all for example.

* export the clip with all of your changes to a QT movie and reimport it back into the timeline.

I think there's a fairly decent free tutorial over at the cow on prepping for Color from FCP, by Walt Biscardi

here it is

So you're telling me 10 grand worth of HD hardware and color don't support it? wacked!
Color does support it, but yeah isn't HD awesome! Still in SD land until I win lotto and /or get my advanced PHD in Theoretical Video Physics to monitor it.

He said no such thing...

He and others have said "prep your footage for COLOR." No speed changes (export those as self contained files), STILLS (JPEGs) or freeze Frames.

And two years ago that same level of functionality would have cost you 100 grand. I guess that savings buys a little entitlement? :violin:

I've had the same issue with Color/FCP.
No speed changes in my footage, yet small gaps between clips when I rendered clips back out to FCP.

Haven't had time to go back and try to get to the bottom of it - but it's definitely not just you, and it has nothing to do with speed changes.

wow, so basically if I'm editing a music video which has over 200 cuts or let alone a feature, I have to export each clip individually and then load color? That sucks.

Well, with total cost of what this company spent just for HD, I'm sure it cost more than a 100 grand. Plus there's nothing wrong with complaing knowing that I may loose my job. thank you! :nads:

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll make sure I "prep" my footage.

I'm gonna be snarky now...because you are completely misreading things and being an ass about it.

No one said that you have to export each clip individually. Where do I say that? I said SPEED CHANGES...FREEZE FRAMES...STILLS (I wrote this big in hopes to catch your attention)...THOSE NEED TO BE prepped for COLOR by exporting and reimporting. If ALL of your footage is slow or fast or freeze frames, then, well....sucks to be you. Don't use Color. Or export your sequence as a self contained file, re-import that, and razor all the cuts.

Please read what I write this time...pay attention to what is being said.

(God it's like talking to my 8 year old...)

Well maybe then they could hire someone who knows what they're doing. Sorry but you set that one right up....

Shane, understood thank you. People who know me on this form knows I can act like an 8 year old.. just for kicks.. :) I got it.

And Noah K, thanks for being an ass! I ain't no great Noah K so cut me some slack!

go to the tab named "setup" then go to "project settings" and in the handles box add some handles 2 should do it.

Send back to final cut and problem solved.

But is that really 'problem solved' or just 'problem hidden'?

If you rely on handles to fill the gaps left by this Color/FCP issue then your final edits are all going to be off by 1 or 2 frames.
Not really an acceptable solution I think.

Dude get over yourself- it was a joke. If you can't have fun with this biz you shouldn't be doing it...

Wow its been a while since I've posted here. I seem to recall BLUESPIDER as one of the more advanced users with a good sense of humor.

Noah, sometimes when even the brightest among us have an issue in production their sense of humor can get a bit short, maybe this isn't the best time to joke about the problem or tell them to get over themselves and that maybe they shouldn't be in this industry. Just a thought.

One concern that I have about simply adding handles is that what does FCP do with the additional 1 or 2 frame handle? If it adds every additional frame back to the timeline then depending on the number of clips you could end up out of sync by the end of the sequence.

Along the lines of what Shane suggested about preparing your sequence for Color, and admitedly this is a bit old school, but I combine all my video tracks into one track before sending to Color. I don't know if this is the reason, but I have never had this problem.
