Combining 16mm and HVX200 or DVX100b

I am shooting a feature where most of the footage will be a telecine of 16mm film and some of it will be digital 24fps. I have heard the dvx100b shoots 24fps but won't necessarily line up with telecine'd film. Is this true? If not, will the hvx200 work?

I just mean can I combine telecine 16mm footage with hvx200 or dvx100b footage on the same timeline if i shoot 24fps? I will be editing with adobe premiere pro 2.0

I'll move this over to the Premiere Pro forum, where hopefully some PP2.0 experts will tell you the proper procedures.

Are you talking about 24pn or 24pa footage? Do you need to remove the pulldown? This will determine whether there are potential issues. PPro 2 has a new checkbox in the "Interpret Footage" dialogue to "Remove 24p DV pulldown" but I don't know if it would have any affect on removing the pulldown from telecined footage like After Effects can.

Sorry, I'm not a cinematographer. My question is purely this. If I shoot 16mm film and telecine it, will I be able to use the dvx100b or the hvx200 in the same timeline? If so, what settings do I need to use when I shoot the digital segment of the movie?

If you telecine the 16mm film to tape it will be interlaced. What format are you planning to transfer the film too? If your doing an SD transfer to digibeta for example it will be 30 frame interlaced and there should be no problems combining footage from the DVX100b.

What is the deliverable? Are you going back to film?

Also, there are a lot of things to consider other than frame rate, aspect ratio, resolution [SD or HD], are you going to one light it and then color correct just what you used?

You should discuss this stuff with the facility who will be doing the transfer to make sure everything works the way you want it too...

I will not be going back to film. I am using both formats specifically so they will look different at different times in the character's life. I will be using smooth grain and rough grain film for example. It will be SD 16:9.

I appreciate everyone's comments. This forum is awesome!

either camera should work. It just depends on the quality you want.

I recently dug up some of my old 16mm (not super 16 mind you). It had been transfered to Beta SP and then using that edited and burned onto a SD DVD. What amazed me was that my last film that I shot using the DVX100A ended up looking much better on a SD DVD. It was cleaner, sharper, with deeper blacks and an overall more pleasing image. Now, 16mm is certainly a technically more powerful format than DVX100 but, if you are more comfortible with a DVX100, you can produce results that look fantastic for a SD DVD.

Now, the debate between an HVX and a DVX is debatible. The HVX has a higher rez CCD and a sharper lense. This is going to give you a sharper image even in SD but, when burned to a DVD, I don't know how noticible the differences are (I plan to do some tests when I get a hold of a DVX100 again). The real plus to chosing the HVX200 in SD is going to be the DVCPro50 codec if you use P2 cards. This gives you twice the color information and will give you much more options for Color Correction in post.
