GH4 Announcing Atomos Shogun – first 4K HDMI recorder compatible with the GH4

Atomos have just sent me some info on their upcoming 4K recorder, primarily for use with the A7S and GH4.
The Shogun is a 7″ IPS monitor backed with recording capability. It is the only 4K HDMI recording solution that can take advantage of the A7S’s 4K signal, 120fps HD output and custom HDMI timecode with start / stop trigger.
The Shogun also has 12G SDI ports and will record 4K ProRes onto single SSDs or RAID.
The recorder will be priced under $2k.
The Shogun also allows uncompressed raw Cinema DNG capture, although I believe this is over HD-SDI only.
The release date for this recorder is not until end of Q3 / Q4 2014, so potentially GH4 and A7S owners could have a while to wait for glorious 4K over HDMI.
On the GH4 this will be a 10bit output to a 10bit ProRes file.
On the A7S this will be an 8bit output to a 10bit ProRes file. so the GH4 maintains an upper hand here as well as that much lighter footprint of the internal 100Mbit codec, for file sizes 8x less than 4K ProRes.
I am super excited for both quite frankly.
The A7S promises an absolutely amazing full frame 4K image, and the GH4 has the more complete feature set and is more practical to use straight off the bat.

Wow, exciting stuff. Too bad for later release though.

Am I the only one who isn't interested in having a 7" screen strapped to my camera? Not only do I not want the added cost of something I cannot use, but often I don't want my subjects to know exactly what I'm focusing on....

I can understand not wanting a monitor and wanting a lower cost. I don't understand why you 'cannot use' it. Is it because you don't plan on rigging your camera up?

Well, at least you have options.

I typically shoot with an EVF so that large of a screen is just not necessary for my style of shooting. I just wish they would offer these recorders in different flavors for those of us who don't want the giant monitor. First convergent and then Atomos. I suppose I can hope for at hyperdeck with 4k hdmi maybe.

MY thoughts exactly. It looks like a great product, but what I really want is a 4K Hyperdeck HDMi.

I would have rather seen just a 4k version of the Ninja Blade. 5" is a good screen size, 7" is pushing it with the size of the GH4.

See now everybody has a different idea of what works best for them!

I happen to prefer a 7" monitor over a 5" monitor.

the price is fair!

Seriously? $2K for a recorder? That's more than the camera, which does a hell of a lot more than just record.

$2K is waaaaay overpriced for what it does, as is Panny's YAGH. These are $500 devices at best (and they'd still make quite a profit, I bet.)

Really? What makes you think they are only worth $500.00? Most of the good external recorders start around $1,000.00. Blackmagic is cheaper but it is also limited to SSD drives which drive up the cost. If you need and find benefit to external recording than the price is not bad at all. Considering how many Atomos units have sold over the years I would say I'm not the only one that agrees they are worth the money.

I have to point this out every time but I remember a time when spending $6,000.00 on a video camera was not unheard of. Heck many of the older DVCAM cameras were way north of $6,000.00 and they only recorded DVCAM. It may be harder for some of the younger people to see and appreciate the value of what we get today but there is great value in what we get. More than some of us who have shot for more cycles of the moon than we care to admit ever thought we would see.

The Shogun is also a 7" monitor with 1920x1200 resolution. You can load customized 3D LUTs. Built-in waveform monitor, focus-peaking and false color, etc. It has 2 fullsized HDMI ports. And 12G HD-SDI. It has Genlock and Timecode.

It's a little bit more than just a recorder and probably a little bit more than a $500 item.
