animated Short..Bukowski

Didn't get it.
Pretty much hated it.

The audio was a bit too distant for me. Maybe if it was more ala Frank Zappa I could appreciate it better. The visuals were well done for what they were, I just didn't get how it all tied together. I didn't understand any of it.

There may be something cool coming from you down the road as it looks like the ideas are there, they didn't gell on this one I felt. Yeah, clean crisp audio I'd like. The AE was alright.

I think you have a cool idea and the foundation is there, just need to tighten it up in future works audibly and visually. As it is now it looks like a rats nest of ideas. Maybe tighend that up a notch and you should be in a better position.

I appreciate the effort though my friend. Looking forward to the next one. :beer:

thank you for the input. Thank you for watching the short. I will take your advice into consideration. have a great day fellow filmmaker

First off, I'm not a filmaker. Why, does that make a difference? And really I thought you might have something more to say. Want to talk about your work? I'm down.
But whatever man.

Bukowski was one of those guys you wanted to push down a flight of stairs because lots of people thought he was talented, yet he was way overrated. Like Kevin Smith.

There's a great documentary about him that shows you how much of a bum he really was.

I see what you did here and for what it is it is very very good.

The problem Charles Bukowski is a right git.

Totally Bollix really....

Waste of time and space....

Now if you are interested in Charles Bukowski's negatives just ask. :grin:

Bottom line is you should keep doing what your doing and follow your heart and passion!

For a more balanced review of your work you should most probably seek some feedback from Charles Bukowski fans and aficionado.

Cheers all the Same! :beer:

Sorry if I sounded hostile. I prefer to call it a passionate opinion, but call it what you want. And I'm not sure what being a bum has anything to do with anything. Most of the best artists are bums, only because the pay sucks, if that makes you a bum then it does I guess.

I'll stick with my first post, post #2. And the other one was because I'd like to discuss it more. The fact that the author didn't want to, didn't help. I'm all for it. As I said, I can see some cool stuff down the road. Again, sorry if I sounded hostile, not my intent.

I have to disagree. If you pick up any one of his poetry books, sure, half the poems are so, so, garbage, but amongst them, are the other half, some of which are amazing.

This is one of my favorite Bukowski poems. It's called "The Shoelace."

a woman, a
tire that’s flat, a
disease, a
desire: fears in front of you,
fears that hold so still
you can study them
like pieces on a
chessboard…
it’s not the large things that
send a man to the
madhouse. death he’s ready for, or
murder, incest, robbery, fire, flood…
no, it’s the continuing series of small tragedies
that send a man to the
madhouse…
not the death of his love
but a shoelace that snaps
with no time left …
The dread of life
is that swarm of trivialities
that can kill quicker than cancer
and which are always there -
licence plates or taxes
or expired driver’s license,
or hiring or firing,
doing it or having it done to you, or
roaches or flies or a
broken hook on a
screen, or out of gas
or too much gas,
the sink’s stopped-up, the landlord’s drunk,
the president doesn’t care and the governor’s
crazy.
lightswitch broken, mattress like a
porcupine;
$105 for a tune-up, carburetor and fuel pump at
sears roebuck;
and the phone bill’s up and the, market’s
down
and the toilet chain is
broken,
and the light has burned out -
the hall light, the front light, the back light,
the inner light; it’s
darker than hell
and twice as
expensive.
then there’s always crabs and ingrown toenails
and people who insist they’re
your friends;
there’s always that and worse;
leaky faucet, christ and christmas;
blue salami, 9 day rains,
50 cent avocados
and purple
liverwurst.
or making it
as a waitress at norm’s on the split shift,
or as an emptier of
bedpans,
or as a carwash or a busboy
or a stealer of old lady’s purses
leaving them screaming on the sidewalks
with broken arms at the age of 80.
suddenly
2 red lights in your rear view mirror
and blood in your
underwear;
toothache, and $979 for a bridge
$300 for a gold
tooth,
and china and russia and america, and
long hair and short hair and no
hair, and beards and no
faces, and plenty of zigzag but no
pot, except maybe one to piss in
and the other one around your
gut.
with each broken shoelace
out of one hundred broken shoelaces,
one man, one woman, one
thing
enters a
madhouse.
so be careful
when you
bend over.

As far as the short goes. I loved the concept, and I'd be interested to see more of these. However, I think this one misses the mark. The visuals are kind of random. It's not adding a thing to Bukowski's poem.

Thank you for taking the time to watch the short. I am thankful that people took the time to check it out. It makes me feel good. Thank you for the negative and positive responses. Both are very valuable. Discussing it further takes away from the work itself, so unless it deals with improving the work from a technical aspect I find it fruitless. Debating Bukowski status as a bum or if people love or hate the short goes against what i really wanted to accomplish. Love it or hate it as long as it draws a response thats the purpose. I find him to be a great American poet and writer. I think anyone that has read his stories or poetry extensively as I have will find meaning in the visuals. Yet sometimes I get caught up in myself and can understand how some people got lost in translation. Again, Filmmakers, non filmmakers, animators, friends, Romans. countrymen, thank you for your input. I have another ready and will put it up in a little while. Thanks again.
