FS7: Angenieux EZ 30-90 T2 vs Zeiss 21-100 T2.9-3.9

For me - probably 80% of my work is 1 or 2 man band and RnG but rarely need a servo type zoom for anything. So yes, investing in one or both of these new lenses is essentially like having a prime set with you - without having to swap out lenses - on the more RnG type work. I'm pretty sure you'll be losing something in IQ for the convenience of the zoom - and agree early stuff I've seen online makes the Zeiss look a bit better. But you could shoot sports, docs, all type of fast-moving "gonzo" style filmmaking with these lenses on nearly any camera.
A bit confused by the pricing just posted on the Angienieux's... assume you can buy the s35 version for the $10,500 US price and then, if ever needed or wanted, purchase the FF rear optical block separate? As well as the multiple mounting options?

I probably zoom in-shot maybe once or twice every couple of years.

Without us knowing how often you work, that really doesn't tell us much! It could be that you zoom in-shot on 50% of your shoots. :cheesy:

Back to the glass, the thing about the ramping on the Zeiss 21-100 is that the ramp is spread out across the range. ( according to the Zeiss rep in the video, that is ). As opposed to the ramping in the Canon 17-120 Cine servo that comes on like a ton of bricks towards the long end of the range.

As Ben pointed out above, if you are not performing in-shot zooms the ramping isn't as big of an issue. You simple adjust the exposure accordingly prior to rolling camera. Or you adjust all of your lighting so as to maintain the same stop. ( okay, that is kinda a big issue, now isn't it? )

And are you genuinely going to be going from 21 to 100 all the time?

Yep, almost every event I have to zoom out(wide) to the audience as they are doing a task. And I am almost always far enough from the presenter to be all the way in (tele) or almost all the way in.

'Preciate the reply:-)

Wait, there are productions where things are necessitated and you can't just do only that which happens to be your bag? Tell us more of this exotic and foreign world, traveler.

I'm using both (not at the same time thouh). I have probably shot more withiut FF than with. I find I have a more comfortable and less tiring body/arm position when pulling right on the lens hand held (I use an Eayrig 90%).
I shoot broadcast commercials that runs on the biggest channels here doing my own focus pulling quite regularly, and feel confident doing so either with or without a FF.
But I agree that the long throw on cine glass are more of a struggle without FF.
I think the 19-90 Cabrio was a great one man band lens, but the price was just too high for me. Same with the Canon 17-120.
would be interesting to see what Fujinon could come up with now that the market has changed quite a bit
If I'm really lucky RED will come out with my perfect zoom, but I doubt it will have the long reach I'm hoping for.
It looks very good from the outside, so time will tell

Which reminds me of something else I forgot to mention. I am with whoever said something like a popularly priced wider to tele f2.8 or so zoom will eventually be done. Say full frame 18-105 f2.8 for under 3k$ US. And whoever does it will have so many sales it will be like printing money. Probably have to assemble it in Vietnam or other low cost country but it will be done.

And if any lens manufacturer is reading this, many of us will give up a bit of sharpness for low CA, low barrel type distortions, and low vignetting. There's a lot more to lens quality than sharpness!

I suspect the new Sony E mount zoom will come down in price fairly quickly but many of us still won't buy it with an E mount.

Y'all have some fun,
Robert

Did you see the new Red lens Jared teased on Facedbook the other day? People putting 2 and 2 together and assuming it is sigma based but with all internal FIZ moters

I do not care for those sort of productions. They insist upon themselves...

I'll leave those to Dave Zoom and his crew.

Dave zoom, lol.

Reminds me of my favorite term "Johnny 5d" .... we've all seen him, out there... somewhere....

You bet. I posted about it in another thread here. Looks really interesting.
I own the 17-50mm Red Zoom. Really great lens, if not very characteristic

When have you ever seen a hipster wearing anything but skinny jeans? On the upside, they're so tight at least they won't be able to reproduce...

Yes but somehow there is some brand of skinny jeans.. that does have the obligatory saggy arse .. that is worm by all hipsters, toting 5D,s..

Or maybe the saggy thing is because Dave Zoom shows his arse elsewhere .... like when spouting film term drivel
