And The Winners Are.......

Ok, here's an update on the winners in all categories. The following eight films have all won prizes for their respective awards. The Recognition of Excellence awards recognize technical achievement in high scoring films that did not place in the top three spots.

1st Place - CPU by Spidey
2nd Place - The ODD Squad by jdanstan
3rd Place - A Brief Case by TheMacB

Recognition of Excellence in Lighting - Synthetic Love by hiro
Recognition of Excellence in Cinematography - We Are Not Alone by Kaz
Recognition of Excellence in Sound Design - Wages of Sin by conrad johnson
Recognition of Excellence in Screenplay - Dead Inside by prezorg
Recognition of Excellence in Editing - The Sequence by pastywhiteboy

The following are the highest scoring films in each of the individual categories. There are no prizes associated with these categories, but the scores contributed to the overall rating of each film.

Best SFX - We Are Not Alone by Kaz
Best Cinematography - CPU by Spidey
Best Lighting - CPU by Spidey
Best Sound Design - CPU by Spidey
Best Score - The ODD Squad by jdanstan
Best Screenplay - A Brief Case by TheMacB
Best Acting - CPU by Spidey

Barry,

Sorry, I'm a little confused.

I want to send out the prize for Best Screenplay, does it go to "prezorg" or "TheMacB"?

And should I just pm them to get an address?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris--Thanks, it goes to prezorg. The Best list gives the highest scoring categories, but those films already won other prizes.

I was just looking at the voting sheet earlier today and was struck by how many good films there were and how fierce the competition was.

but a low place can be misleading -- I think its imporant to consider is the narrow margin between most of the final scores.

They usually have a point 1 or less than point 1 gap -- lots of them are as close as a thousandth of a point!

if you rounded it would look more like this:
1 1st
6 tied for 2nd
10 tied for 3rd
27 tied for 4th
13 tied for 5th
1 6th

that's 50 films right in the middle vying for 3,4, and 5th and being placed up or down sometimes by a thousandth of a point!

Wow -- lots of really fierce films this go around!

here's my logic
rounded score sheet

Good point. Also keep in mind that there were only a maximum of 50ish votes on any given movie. One person voting or not voting could change your score a significant amount. Look at it like this:
Let's say your flick has a 6.000 average from 40 voters. That means all their scores (6 each) added together total 1,440 points. If one of them didn't vote, your score changes. Let's say that person really liked your flick and gave you all 9s. That's 56 points gone, leaving 1384. That's now an average (divided by 39 and 6) of 5.915. Given how close this contest was, that tenth of a point could be enough to move you up and down 3 or 4 places.

I guess what I'm saying is, every vote counted here, so there's an element of luck to it. I think the most useful thing (having worked on a movie that came in more or less in the middle) is to look at the films that scored best and figure out how to steal from them--Err, I mean learn from them.

Just so as not to be misunderstood again, that was a joke. ;)

really? is that true? not saying it isn't -- just where are you getting that from though?

You're most definitely correct, but as long as the voter kept consistant standards for all of the films he/she voted for, then that shift would apply to all of them... it's more than likely though, that these are not all 100% on the same grading table... but assuming that they are, the votes would balance out.

Despite the small defect, I think this is a really good voting system and there just needs to be more categories to vote from.

:)

Oh, I just meant luck in terms of whether the posters who vote happen to be ones who like your flick-- I'm saying the sample isn't really that big. There could be someone out there who loved your film but just couldn't vote.

Anyway, I agree the system is just fine, and I can't think of a better one. I'm just giving my opinion on what exactly the results should mean to film-makers. i.e. they may be useful, but don't think of them as gospel or some decree that a film was definitivley better or worse than yours. ::shrugs::

I think we all know what you are saying and I for one don't appreciate it!:banned:

Ha ha. Very funny. Real cute. I am SO amused. Good one.

No, really. That wasn't sarcasm. Seriously, that was pretty funny. ;)
