And Here We Are Now... (short film, teaser inside)

Get a grip, man.

Based on your whole thread (disregarding what I wrote or anyone else), I'd say your thread of full of crap, but hey, what do I know anyway.
What does this even mean? Seriously. You're saying I didn't even direct a film...?

How do you waste money on putting your film in multiple festivals? You spend money to make money in film or else there'd be no festivals anywhere because people would realize they are a waste of time and money (according to you) to submit to every festival out there.
It's funny because you came into this thread acting like the seasoned veteran but you're really showing yourself to be the one who's rather naiive and ill-informed.

After you've completed a film, you set aside a budget for festival entry. Unless you have unlimited funds, entering every festival out there is not a legitimate strategy. So you weigh the ones that make sense versus the ones that don't and you enter those. How is that difficult to understand? Maybe someone else reading this nonsense who's completed a film and entered into festivals can chime in here?

Do you belong to any film groups or organizations here in Toronto? If not, I suggest you join one or two, you'll soon learn how things in film really work. And as far as being a defeatist, lol, I'm as realistic as they come. Things don't happen in film in a month... again, join a film organization, you'll learn this too.
No, I'm not in any film groups or organizations, I've been busy making films.

you'll soon learn how things in film really work.
You're not an authority on how things "really work". Unless you can provide me a link to your IMDB page, then maybe we can start taking what you say seriously.

What issues or questions am I dodging anyway? Just curious.

- How many years have you worked in the industry and in what capacity?

- How many films have you completed on your own and attempted to market in the industry (in Toronto specifically)?

- How many professionally produced productions have you been involved with in any capacity?

- How many films have you taken on the festival circuit or at least submitted into 3+ festivals?

- How many film scripts/treatments have you actually pitched within the industry?

If you're wondering why those questions come to mind for me, it's because you're talking like a guy with a lot of experience working in this industry. If that's the case, then yeah, I should definitely take what you say and consider it. But if you're basing all this knowledge from "film organizations" and reading posts on the internet rather than actual, tangible experiences that you have, well then I'll be happy to have been proven right.

I can't say anything else about your teaser. What else is there left to say? If your 60 second teaser says nothing about your story, it's just wasted space on a server somewhere.

The teaser trailer was only created for the benefit of those who helped out with the production, specifically the actors, who wanted something to show their friends/family since the film would not be posted for online viewing.

Personally I don't think a full length trailer is necessary for a 14 minute film, though I have no issues with a short teaser just to get a general idea of what the film is like.

The trailer itself hasn't been used for any 'professional' purposes.

hahahahaha. You do a budget BEFORE a film is done, not afterwards.

No, I'm not in any film groups or organizations, I've been busy making films.

hahahahaha. You really do need to join some film group or organizations. You are doing short 12 min films... what do you do with the rest of your time? Certainly not writing up budgets or proposals.

You're not an authority on how things "really work".

hahahahaha. No, I'm not the authority at all. It's just called being "realistic" about how things "really work".

How many years have you worked in the industry and in what capacity? 5

- How many films have you completed on your own and attempted to market in the industry (in Toronto specifically)? - Currently working on two.

- How many professionally produced productions have you been involved with in any capacity? - Four

- How many films have you taken on the festival circuit or at least submitted into 3+ festivals? 1

- How many film scripts/treatments have you actually pitched within the industry?

hahahahaha - these are things you really shouldn't say outloud or write on a message board. Read over this whole forum and then you'll understand.

The above post was really all I needed to call game, set, match on this one.

hahahahaha. You do a budget BEFORE a film is done, not afterwards.

Learn how to read. I specified a budget specifically for festival entry, whether you do that before or after the film's completion is inconsequential.

Some solid in-depth answers right there. In what capacity did you work on those 5 films? Oh and "currently working on two", so in other words the answer to my question there is "zero". All I needed to know.

- How many films have you taken on the festival circuit or at least submitted into 3+ festivals? 1

If you haven't completed any films, which film is this? How did your remarkable strategy of submitting to every film festival known to man work out for you?

If you knew anything about budgets for film, it's all done (festivals included) before the film is shot. Go to Chapters/Indigo and get a book on film production. The cost of festivals is built into the final budget or else you have nothing to set aside when the production is finally done.

Anyway, there's no sense in going on with this nonsense, I'm clearly wasting my time with this thread and with your defensive attitude. As mentioned before, read over this whole forum and you'll understand things a lot better and you'll be able to make sense of it all.

Best of luck on your current project, I'll be looking for it for sure on TV :)

wow, your trailer and now your replies really do indicate how f#cked you really are.

conceded defeat to what? hitting rock bottom? what the h#ll are you talking about?

You should've done a psychological short film, I think with your condition and experience, you would've made a much better film and trailer based on your thought process alone.

hey, at least you have 17 posts because of this thread, well done.

seriously dude, you're making the rest of us from Toronto on this site look bad. grow up, get some experience, stop talking out of your a@@ and you should be able to get along with everyone on here.

get some experience, stop talking out of your a@@

wow, I could just as easily say the same thing to you.

If you don't like the contents of this thread, don't read it.

I think if any impartial party read this thread they'd note how condescending and unfoundedly self-righteous you come off. You basically jumped into this thread and accused me repeatedly of either being an easily-scammed idiot or a flat-out liar when you know nothing about me or my film and have no tangible experience in the industry (other than what you learned in your 'film organizations').

I just hope that any young aspiring filmmakers reading these threads who are considering shooting their first film will disregard everything you've said here- as with your logic and jaded perspective, there's no reason to even try to be a filmmaker.

hey, I'm a young and aspiring filmmaker, so there goes that theory. I think if someone is new to film or dvxuser.com can make up their own mind about this thread. I'm pretty sure even they will know getting a producer in 5 days seems a little farfetched.

I'm doing my first film as a director, I never said I didn't have previous experience as a writer, DP, PR and 1st AD on a set before.

Film is tough... if you can't handle criticism, frustration or be patient, you shouldn't be in it.

There's a difference between providing criticism and needlessly attacking someone and implying that they're a liar because they've done something that based on your very limited experience you deem "impossible". I can certainly 'handle it', but don't expect for me to sit back and not point out the position you're coming from, which in my opinion invalidates a great deal of the 'wisdom' you've spewed in this thread.

The contract is signed and finalized, it's on my desk right now. The production company/distributor is legitimate, and recently debuted a series on TVTropolis. It's not a scam. It could very well lead to nothing, or it could very well lead to something, I have no idea and neither do you. Either way, it's done, it happened, it's not impossible, get over it and move onto the next thread.

I agree that Pavans initial post wasnt clear and does come across a little inexperienced.

But dale seriously its you that seem to be trying to win some major debate here that has no point.

ugh, I've asked Jarred to remove my posts from this thread. Frankly, I've said what I wanted to say and as much as a spirited debate or discussion is sometimes fun and healthy, I think this thread has run it's course.

Noel:

I'm not trying to win a debate at all (I stink at debates actually), just pointed out a few glaringly obvious things that don't make a lot of sense to me. I should've just said nothing at all, would've saved a lot of time yesterday when I should've been working on other things.

dre83:

Old enough to know better to engage in things like this, I'll leave it at that.

Well I bought a T2i a couple weeks ago and decided it'd be a good idea to shoot a little film with it. The last film I shot was easily the most 'professional' thing I've ever done, which probably isn't saying much, but I thought it would be fun to shoot something in the exact opposite fashion- completely run and gun, with my friends acting, no money or real equipment etc.

I'm almost done editing the film and despite the obvious technical faults, I'm really pretty happy with it. I have no plans to attempt the festival circuit or anything else like I did on the last one, will just be posting it online to view in full freely next week.

I finished a trailer that I just posted on youtube, you can view it here:
