Anamorphic Shootout

Proskar 2x can focus as close to cover whole head in frame ,it would have to be disassembled and modified to focus closer.

Sorry for the delay in response. I just need to subscribe to this thread...believe it or not, I never did. (lol)

OK...for close focus, you'll find that they ALL need to use diopters to get close ups. One of my favs is the Keihan 16B. Shoot'um up!

Nice! thanks for the recommendation...Ive been looking around and have come up empty for the Keihan. Found a Sankor 16c in pretty good condition I am thinking about getting.

Small anamorphics for 8mm cameras, like the tiny iscomorphot 8 1.5x or the Moller Bolex 8 1.5x, can focus as close as 50cm without the use of diopters. Interestingly enough these lenses with the really small 22-24mm rear thread do not exhibit vignetting on a cropped size sensor even for a taking lens of 58mm (Helios 44). These are my lenses of choice at the moment, since they offer all the interesting characteristics of anamorphics, while being very lightweight.

Only thing I haven't managed to resolve yet, is that on a bright sunny day, footage outdoors appears to be over exposed even when the taking lens is stopped down almost to the minimum aperture, and you have to go to really high shutter speeds to keep reasonable exposures. Maybe ND filters are needed in front of the anamorphic (difficult to mount)? any suggestions on that?

I tried locating the iscomorphot and the moller but to no avail. Getting some of these can be a real pain...These anamorphics run like the stock market!

True. These are quite scarce. But worth the wait when you eventually get your hands on one. I ll try to shoot something with these lenses and upload

Hey guys, you prob already know...but in case you missed it. I'm renting my 4 iscorama units (and other anamorphic setups). My Iscorama (36type) Has a Isco 50mm F2.8, Isco 35mm F3.5, Nikon 50mm F1.8, DIopters +1, +2, +4, +10, +.4 Achromat. All for 500usd per month. :) I also have 2 Iscorama 54s... Contact me at kingif@yahoo.com to reserve. You'll want to contact as soon as possible to reserve the time-frame. Bottom line: Why be frustrated about not being able to buy...when you can rent at this cost? :) Mad love for DVXUsers everywhere!

Hey everyone! Quick question for Kostas!

I recently bought the Bell and Howell here http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180589649382&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_701wt_894

I was wondering if it was the same one as yours and if you could let me know the minimum focus distance and any info that I could use so I can be prepared when I get it!

Also, I've been trying to look, but haven't found info on whether or not you can rack focus (mind you, I haven't read the gigantic thread yet!)

Thanks!

i cant believe you paid so much for it, its so small you cant even use 50mm, you can use many 50$/sub 100$ anamorphic lenses with 50mm.Ouch.This lens is worth like 20$ for me if i can only use 75mm and more telephoto.
LOL there are lenses with much bigger glass than this and cheaper ones.Is it because of bell and howell name ?
This one would work with 35mm lens on 7D but would need to be modified to allow closer focus

You cant rack focus with this lens. You need to focus both lenses on the same point.

Hey!
No it is not the same. Mine is the Kowa for Bell&Howell which is basically the same as the Kowa 16H-8Z, with a slightly bigger thread. You can see a picture of mine here http://www.flickr.com/photos/52298454@N07/4819901675/
and here: http://home.pacbell.net/mnyberg/super8mm/super8_39.html
I cannot comment on the one you got cause I haven't ever used it, but I suspect that because of the longer lens barrel you will get vignetting on any focal length shorter than 85mm on a crop sensor.
Mine focuses down to 4.5-5 feet, and using a diopter it can focus down to 2-3 feet. On a crop sensor you can use it with a 50mm lens (maybe even less) without vignetting which is handy. But most importantly you can use it even on full frame with an 85mm lens.
You cannot rack focus with these lenses, because you need to focus both your taking lens and your anamorphic. Not much of a problem in a controlled environment. Needs some effort to be used but results can be rewarding.
Anyway, my lens will be up for sale soon since it doesn't get much use lately, I have a similar one and I definitely don't need two of them. But, it is quite pricier than what you have paid. These lenses are much sought after because of the good optical properties and of the combination of short lens barrel and large rear thread making them much more useful on DSLRs (crop sensor or full frame) than other anamorphics (Sankor, Keihan, Panavision etc.) which need longer focal lengths to cutoff vignetting.

Hi guys, I follow your test for ages,
and sunday I received my hypergonar Chretien HIFI2.
What a monster !!!!
I've shot my first test as fast as I can and edited in FCP with no CC.
here's a link with flares and vignetting.
aspect ratio is not squeeze as Edwin Lee said

I also have a anamorphic music video to post. I shot this with my inflight kowa 35 1.5x. i think it turned out good. most of it was on the t2i and a small portion of the shots are just cropped 5d. I was really impressed by the way this lens handled barrel distortion compared to 8z I have... the difference between the two in that area is astounding. I plan on using this setup quite often as it was fairly easy to use. check it out.... http://vimeo.com/16335289 password is ceramicindian

I have prepared some footage to test the Moller-Bolex 19/8/1.5x anamorphot performance on the Canon 550d in low light.

This is a tiny lens with 1.5x anamorphic ratio.
Most of the shots have been performed wide open with the Helios 55-4 58mm f2.0, and the Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 and at high ISOs (800 or more).

I really like this lens for the following reasons:
- Tiny, doesn't weight a lot
- No vignetting on a crop sensor @58mm and even @50mm up to f2.8
- Sharp enough even wide open
- 1.5x anamorphic ratio, easy to unsqueeze to aspect ratios from 2.39:1 to 2.70:1 without visible distortions
- focuses as close as 0.5m without diopters
- nice purple-blueish flares

You have to focus both the taking lens and the anamorphot to nail focus.

The lens is not in excellent shape (small glass separation on the edge of the back element) but I think that it doesn't affect the image quality.

Here it is: http://www.vimeo.com/19189116

Let me know what you think.

Superb footage from a lens, quite frankly, I've never heard of.
When in blazes did you find such a thing?

I've found the hypergonar in a small shop in paris...
and some tests done 10days ago with a canon 70-200

and
http://vimeo.com/19093223

Since I've found in kowa16s and a 2x anamorphic bell and howell.
I'm just waiting new lenses rings for them and the famous helios 58 mm
Expected on wednesday.... new tests coming.
I LOVE THIS LENS!!! I own 9 of them! :) I also have the Helios 44 58mm F2.0...looks GREAT with this (I own 8 of these)....I have some footy...but it doesn't look great....I was actually testing some color correction (looks awful BTW...)....and Noise reduction....(over done BTW). I have a VERY effective system for lens support and focus. I've even shot hand-held with it. :) I'm so glad that you're enjoying this lens....the flares are the best I've seen...bar NONE! Looking forward to more footy from you!

ps....I'll be selling some Hypergonar with support over the next 2-3 months. :)

I just purchased a Proskar Anamorphic. I'm going to try it out and I'll post some tests in about a month!
