Anamorphic Shootout

the Prima Lense without the Adapter that Come with it has a Thread size of about 38mm, with the adapter on it the thread size on that is about 67mm

Thanks for that. Just so that you are aware, this is a pretty standard dimension.

As I do not use mine I decided to put my Kowa 8-z on the bay.
I bought it to use on a super8 camera years ago, but it's not really easy to use as it requires the double focusing method. So, that's perfect for landscapes without traveling, I mean, land-scopes :)
I think it's pretty obvious those lens will have a second life with DSLR movies. The videos on this topic are amazing.
you can check the auction : http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260570032016
don't hesitate to ask me question I will help you as much as I can.
Maybe I'll go next time for the "generic anamorphic adaptor" which, to my opinion is better fitted to super8 camera use as it's lightweight and does not need the double focusing step through the tiny viewfinder. And even if the lens is soft, as super 8 is not really sharp, it will not be that an issue.

Is the Prima Anamorphic 2x or 1.5x? What's the approximate aspect ratio it produces? I'm guessing it's a very, very wide one considering how cheaply it sells for...

Judging from your footage I would guess it's actually a 2x, but I can't be sure. You can test by shooting a circle and trying different unsqueezed ratios.

2x anamorphic lens for 500$.. those sankors and kowas was around 100-200$ on ebay weeks ago, and you can still find some in that range, i dont like this greedy pricing!

hey people, i need to know if I can use this lens. (I know the bidding ended but a guy offer me the same lens for $50).

Thank you!

I have a lens similar to this lens. This 'dimension'...(very long and thin) is probably the WORST dimension to can work with. Typically you'll find that "short" and "fat" is best. The longer and thinner...the harder it is to work with and get to focus. That doesn't mean it won't work....it does mean you'll have to work A LOT HARDER to get it to focus.

Thanks for sharing man! I'm sure that you already know that 1.33 is "under" de-compressing it? It looks fine...I know some people actually PREFER it that way. Either way is fine....it's just a fact that it is 2x...again...nice either way. :)

I finally got around to cutting some Isco 36 footage, follow the 2.0.3 firmware link in my sig.

Nice squig! I just LOVE my Iscorama 36. Too bad I'm selling it this weekend... :( Oh well...I'm sure it will find a good home. :)

Hi HHL I'm shooting with a GH1 and a Canon 7D. After a year of trying to shoot with available light I found that regardless of my cam I love using artificial light. This has lessened my need for low light capability, and makes me love my kit lens more and more, I get my best images with it.

Am very very interested in going anamorphic. How much are you asking for your 36? Can it work with the kit lens?

I live in Beirut, I see that not very many people like shipping there, I can provide the cost of the lens in cash through western union if that's cool, safest way for me and the quickest from lebanon, you pick up cash immediately... and as for shipping we have a US mailbox if needed.

Pls let me know if this is cool, am looking up differences between isco 36 and 54 ...

Thanks and Cheers :)

Well, it's been a VERY LONG WINTER!!!! We had TERRIBLE weather here, as far as shooting goes, and my children were sick for 6 months straight. So...I finally got some time to shoot some actual footage. So here it is!

Keihan 16B Mounted on a Nikon 50mm F2.0
Canon T2i
ISO: 200
Shutter Speed: 50

Most of this was shot at F5.6, some F4.0, and very few F2.8. (I opened the lens up as it got later) This lens was VERY IMPRESSIVE. I am THRILLED with it's sharpness. Please also note that shooting with the T2i compared to the D90 is giving much SHARPER results. So, if you look back at other footage, it may not be an acurate comparison....as I have changed cameras. We'll update that stuff as time goes on. :) On another note, sad day, (I may regret this), I put my Iscorama 36 lens on ebay...sad to see it go, but so it goes. :(

Here's the footage:

Nice colours HHL! Beautiful footage there - and a beautiful film like feel. Did you do any grading?

It looks like you're finally getting some nice weather there too!

I shot some new test footage with the Iscomorphot 8/1.5x, cropped to the size of a crop camera sensor. I'm selling this if anyone with a 7D or T2i is interested?

No color grading. Just 100% pure T2i. Not bad huh? (Especially for a camera that cost 799.00!)

Did you color grade yours? I really like the saxaphone stuff. VERY COOL!

Screen captures below. Enjoy! T2i, no color grading. Keihan 16B anamorphic lens mounted on a Nikon 50mm 2.0. ISO 200. Shot at F5.6, F4.0, F2.8. Shutter speed 50.

I woke up this morning, and wondered if anyone had ever shot DSLR footage with an anamorphic lens. After a little bit of Googling, YouTube searching, and browsing this forum, I finally found this thread.

There is a project that I might be doing, and I'm thinking anamorphic lenses would go well with the "mood" of the video. I've gone through all of the pages on this topic, but I need to get a sort of "summery" of all that's been said.

The reason I'd use anamorphic lenses is for the lens flares and brokeh. 99.9% of the footage would be shot indoors. I'd be shooting on one of the Canon cameras. I'd want to rent the lens, unless there is a really old anamorphic lens that would be cheap enough to buy (under $200).

Is the 7D the best option for using anamorphic lenses?
If I can't find a local company that rents anamorphic lenses, are there some out of state that will ship me the rental?
Are there any high quality (but old) lenses that I could buy, which would be cheaper than renting?
What all am I going to need for this setup?

Thanks in advance!
