Anamorphic Shootout

@HHL haha wifey says okay but here already needs to buy a couch first !
i had ordered a spare 42-52 ring for my 16C and a 43-52 on the HV20... i will try and weld the one that fits best when mine finally passes customs :/ it might be a different barrel since it is not branded as panavision while still being sold as a superama-16 and looking very similar as yours with the zebra focusing ring that was popular in that era.

i met a retired projectionnist and few movie enthusiasts down here to scout for old 8-16-35mm gear and it seems hypergonars were highly regarded when they shared duties along iscos back in the days. now that every theatre is switching to digital, they are not too hard to come by but need a complete support system indeed as they will add about 2-4 pounds to deal with. i asked to borrow one from the local cinema to test for focus distances and will report my findings... it is marked from 15m/50feet to infinity.
while screening one of my short there, i saw all these modern golden barrel kolmorgens and ultra iscos and now curious if anyone could test them for shooting ?

My wifey says that I probably should have told you we have 4 kids. :) Maybe you'll need a couple of couches? (lol)

I have several of these and will be testing them also. :) I'll post results.

So far, I've only done "hand held" tests....but I am impressed. Can't wait to get my support system from India. (Hopefully it works!) :)

@HHL "I have several of these"... lol, collector much ? looking forward to your tests.
i just got delivery of the hypergonar twentieth century fox. man that big fat boy is heavier than expected and dwarfs the 24-105L. needs rails and proper support before further testing as hand holding gets way too much shake to judge sharpness. won't focus closer than 6.25 meters though and too much vignette for fullframe imho.

"Big fat boy" is RIGHT! That's why I have ordered some supports. I am trying to find a suitable put more affordable solution than "rails". I know that they can be a little expensive. We'll see how it works out. BTW....your Hypergonar is VERY different than mine. Interesting! Also....Mine appears to focus closer than 6.5 meters. We'll see though. I haven't had the chance to measure. (Plus I start shaking after a min because it's WAY to heavy to effectively shoot hand held w/o rings and support)

Regis, it would be funny if you'd post some stuff from there... deal?

E. :-)

@Emanuel : it is already 4 Kg with the 7D & lens to aim and focus both barrel very unpractical : i am so not dropping this beast for hand holding it too long.
i will try to get somekind of dof adapter rails reconfigured to match the size while awaiting some rings from HK to tie them up. then we'll have a decent try and share the results here but it already doesn't seem too good for anything else than long distance panorama.
i don't expect possible use indoors unless shooting in a castle or something with big wide rooms and corridors.

Yes it is threaded. It is NOT a standard PITCH how ever. The Sankor has the same problem. Basically, the only real viable option is to glue the nearest size step up ring. In this case, (I just measured it...I don't currently have this one, so yes it was handheld)...it would be 43-52mm step up ring. (It is BARELY under 43mm) So basically the way to attach it is to glue the ring to the Anamorphic lens, then screw the anamorphic lens to the standard lens. Here is an example. (Sankor 16C)

hey HHL, just wanted to let you know that I tried a 49mm to 40.5mm step down ring for the Sankor and it did seem to fit. you can get one on ebay I think if you would like to use that instead. although I do appreciate the use of superglue ha. thanks for the tests though and I look forward to the shootouts.

Thanks killacam! Have you actually screwed it on? I ask because you would be the only one who bought a stepup ring that had the same pitch as the Sankor. What model did you get? Sankor 16C? Could you post where you got your ring from? VERY COOL!

very cool finding !
i think it should work ; the 42-52 ring does not screw on the sankor 16c : too much play.
40.5 should be it. but i only found a 40.5-49 step ring when i'd love a 40.5 to 52 if that exists.

I got this one from ebay seller qualshot: http://cgi.ebay.com/Step-down-adapt...ltDomain_0?hash=item35a6243edc#ht_1225wt_1165

yeah it screws in. I got the Sankor 16C. you still have to kind of futz around with how much you screw it in in order to not have the image skewed or tilted but it beats having to figure out a diy mounting option. you could probably make a mark on the lens and the step down ring when you get it aligned right.

What is the definition of frustration?

Ordering step up rings and finding out that they are 1-2mm to small. RRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I may "rig" the Hypergonar this weekend and shoot some footy, but I'm not sure that I can. What's worse, is that the size it needs is ONLY made in CHINA. Yet another delay....

I guess this is the point of the post though. If at all possible, get a lens that someone ELSE has already taken care of this stuff. Otherwise, it can be a PAIN. I'm also working with the support system for the Larger lenses. I have 4 different types of lenses that are VERY LARGE. Bell and Howell, Hypergonar, ISCO, and Kollmorgen. They will all require a support system though. I am trying to find something cheaper than an entire rail solution as this can be a bit spendy. Again, if you get a lens that someone else has already figured this stuff out...MUCH BETTER. (less frustration anyway) Back to the grind....how am I going to make this freaking thing work?

what size did you order ?
i'm trying anything in the 66-67mm range for the hypergonar rear but it seems (again!) non standard pitch.
front barrel is at 20cm away and 100mm diameter so it will need proper rails supporting the end and secure alignment.
looking at parts from the gini rigs right now.
i'm pretty sure it won't be a good player with the 5D unless shooting super telephoto because of the long optical path : too much tunnel effect (when there is that much, it is not honest to talk about vignette lol)
on the 7D might work at 135mm but again the focusing is going to be very far away ...

I ordered 67. I does NOT fit. I think 69 is my next bet. I might try 55mm for the INSIDE thread. We'll see...I will let you know though.

I was able to use my 67mm-72mm ring to adapt a square front Lomo Anamorphic lens to my 35-105 f2.8 Sigma. I didn't get a chance to shoot with it yet, but, it's pretty solid. I am using my support from India. I think will work with some lenses....I think I want something a little longer for my Hypergonar. We'll see. I try to post some pics later tonight of the Lomo setup. :)

Hey Guys. Bad weather...wrong size rings...incomplete setup...I'm still gonna post something DANG IT! :) This is a Lomo Anamorphic lens (square front). It is mounted (by step up ring 67mm-72mm) to a Sigma 35-105 f2.8. I promise I'll shoot better footage with this setup in the up coming weeks. But Here's some to start with. BTW this is a 1.5x Lens. i hear you on the swearing lol got 4 different of these 67mm-ish rings ordered last week
i think i might go to someone with a lathe/milling station and be done with it and epoxy.

nice lomo but seems a bit soft

I agree. I need to give it more time and a better shoot, but, so far, it does seem a bit soft.

The one good thing about super glue is that it hold well....but it's also not too bad to remove. I hit one with a hammer (gently) 3 times and it came off. So it's not sooooo permanent. (If you decide to get one custom milled later.) :) I feel your pain.

@HHL:

Do you have any pictures of your rig? Which Lomo square front lens do you use on your sigma?

The footage looks nice, i would really like to see it on vimeo HD.
