Anamorphic Shootout

I'll let you know as soon I my freaking package arrives. (I order both of these 4 weeks ago...shipping was delayed.) So if you want to "hang out" for a while, I'll let you know as soon as I receive it and have a chance to shoot with it/them. :) Happy hunting!

So These can Be Used for Filming and Projections I take it,.

So These can Be Used for Filming and Projections I take it,.

Projections: certainly. Filming: that remains to be seen. These lenses (the ones you havce mentioned) were made specifically for projection. Other lenses, such at the Sankor, were specifically designed for BOTH. That is not the case with these two lenses. That doesn't mean that it can't...but I'm certain we'll find out. :)

I think Using the Generis Adapter and Using Diopters to better focus the thing seems like a good inexpensive way to Anamorphic 1.33 aspect Ratio..

My preliminary tests show that it does work. It is a little out of focus though. I'll do more tests and post footy to confirm findings. Others have found the same thing, though I haven't see their footage. I will say that diopters do NOT make the focus sharper. It does make it "closer"...but not sharper.

i wish I could get my hands on one that works with panavision or Zeiss, I know a Machine shop who could mass produce it for cheap in any anodized color

iscorama (Isco 36)? how much is is squished 1.5 or 2x

i have the screw apart (adapter back + anamorphic lens) m42 mount one. it doesnt say what mm it is.

Is it worth pulling the trigger on the generic adapter just to get something? Alas my lenses are Canon 58mm's, but Nikon's will do at 52mmm. Not sure how the old focusing works, is it just that they don't let you focus at a certain closeness - hence the need for the diopters - like being far sighted.

In that case do the diopters just let you focuser close and also focuser more into the distance, or is it just that it brings the distance range of focusing closer.

i'm afraid the generic adapter might be a nice option for camcorder sized sensor but not so great on a DSLR. i need further time but inital test proved to be quite hard to get anything sharp at all despite the nice flaring and no vignetting on a 49mm front thread prime.

a bit **** on a dslr i think..good for compact cameras like canon hv30..
the better quality century and optex ones you could get sharpish on a dslr @ f4..
try yours @ 5.6...

Hi Guys. I just shot a quick test, (results to ugly to post) :) I shot with the Generic Adapter, Sankor, and Keihan all at f5.6...the results are the same. The Generic adapter is soft. It's not as sharp as the other lenses. I'm not going to address this anymore. It's clear that the Generic Adapter is likely the "bottom" rung as far as Anamorphic lenses is concerned. I'll make sure that I let you know if I find one that is worse. :)

So far, it's also clear that the top rung is the Iscorama. I have the Isco 36...it rocks! As far as "second best"....I look forward to crowning someone....but for now, I won't jump to any conclusions.

Shootout summary:
1. Top rung: Iscorama
2. Bottom rung: Generic Adapter

More to come....

Hey Guys! I've been so busy...having said that, I'm trying to make time to shoot some footy and post it. Here's some pics. 2 new lenses that I received. ISCO "Kiptar" and the Kowa 16A. These two lenses will be very interesting. Enjoy the pics.

I will say that something that is proving to be VERY difficult is how VARIED these lenses are. That is to say that one lens TOTALLY rocks at short range....and then it's TERRIBLE at longer range shots. I'll try to detail it all, but it's going to take MONTHS. I just shot with 10 different lenses on this little set up and it was as tiring as it was confusing. Some lenses that I've learned to LOVE did VERY poorly in this setup. These two are new to me...and I liked with I saw from both...anyway. I'll do my best to give additional insight into each anamorphic lenses so that everyone can purchase one that fits their needs. Enjoy!

...oh ya....just fyi...this is all "hand held". I just received these two, so I don't have stepup rings yet.

Just found this thread now! I didn't know this was where the cool gang were hanging out these days!

For those interested, I have Isco 36 and Kowa 8Z "tests2 here:

Thanks for posting that hyalinejim! Great footy! I look forward to seeing more of Ireland isn't it? Anyway....VERY COOL! Thanks for joining the party!

Can't wait to hear about the Hypergonar results!

Me too! I'm still waiting for this part I ordered from India:

I'll let you know how this works out. (I know that if you are using a rails system, you would use something more like this)

The top most solution is just more affordable. The bottom most, is more professional, but...I figured I see if this other solution is acceptable. I'll report my results of course. If I'm not mistaken, you already have one of these too, yes? It is VERY heavy. We'll see if this helps some. :)

HHL, i want one of those Indian contraptions! Can you post a link?

Off topic:

I have some Pentacon Six medium format lenses and a Pentacon Six bellows that I've modified to mount to a Canon. That baseplate is perfect for mounting the bellows, and will allow for rise, fall and tilt (and possible cross shift, by fiddling with it a bit).
