Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Is there any place here or elsewhere where I can view more 16X9 footage (using the anamorphic) with the DVX? It would be cool if we had a special 16X9 clips section.
I have a distribution deal for national homevideo and broadcast and the DVD version needs to be in 16:9. Since I own the camera already, I was hoping to shoot with DVX100(olderversion) and the anamorphic adapter without having to bump up to the 900 or purchasing the new Canon XL2. I just wish I could see more footage before purchasing the adapter.

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

As of right now, all orders have been shipped. Thanks to everyone for your patience, your guides should be there in just a few days!

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

I just wanted to say, I got my guide last week, and I love it.

It is very well written (even a dope like me can understand it) and I would have been lost without it.

My next project (starting next month) will be shot with my new anamorphic lense and I am feeling much more confident now.

Thanks again for putting together such a helpful guide.

Chris

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Thanks for all the great reviews, I'm glad that it's actually helpful to people! :)

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Barry,

I have been working with the anamorphic adapter and your guide this week and it has been great.

I have tried the tape measure method and auto-focus method for setting the appropriate focus.

Most of the time the auto-focus method works great, but sometimes it seems like the camera is going a little wacky and it just can't autofocus. For example the AF numbers will flucuate wildly in a range from like 52 to 68, like it just can't make up it's mind. I should add what I am trying to get it to autofocus on is not moving.

Have you ever seen this before? Obviously I can use the tape measure method in these instances, but I am wondering if you know the cause?

Thanks,

Chris

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

That's "focus hunting", and it usually happens under dim conditions and/or when there's not much contrast in the scene. The camera looks for contrast between light and dark on vertical lines in order to measure when something is in sharp focus, and if there's not enough light or enough contrast, it'll hunt. It's much worse in 24P and 30P mode... Adam Wilt timed the camera at 55 seconds trying to lock focus on a non-moving subject in low light in 24P mode.

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Barry,

"focus hunting" that makes sense - the lights were very dim. Next time I will raise the light level or bring a tape measure.

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Barry -- If you have a chance look back on the thread and please answer my question if you get a chance. Which is basically this: If I'm shooting in squeeze mode in default F5 and change the setting from thick to thin -- will I get that increased resolution you talk about in your guide. I realize that it would be better in advanced but my NLE doesn't utilize advanced. Thanks

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

Always use THIN mode when shooting squeeze. Using THICK with Squeeze is just wasted resolution.

Using THIN with Squeeze would deliver about the same resolution as using the anamorphic adapter with THICK. Using the anamorphic adapter with THIN will deliver about 35% higher resolution than using Squeeze mode with THIN.

I just Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

I just recieved the guide and it's been a big help determining whether I'm going to purchase the anamorphic adapter. However, I still have a few more question after reading through it:

1. Are there any extra precautions to take when executing tracking and dolly shots?

2. It seems you have to be pretty accurate with the focus and zoom numbers. Will rack focusing be a problem?

Re: Anamorphic Adapter Guide now available!

I've done dolly shots with it, no problem.

Yes, focus is critical. Rack focusing will require more attention than without the adapter, because you have to take into account that at further distances you can get away with a more wide-open aperture, but the closer you focus the more stopped-down the aperture needs to be. So as long as you plan out the recommended aperture for each focus distance and make sure that you're covered for the smaller of the two, then rack focusing shouldn't present any difficulties.

The DVX user's guide is on its way, includes a DVD and should be ready by the end of this month, if all goes well! Thanks for the nice words! ;D

When I saw the mailman with the Priority mailer I knew it arrived. Barry you did an excellent job and the guide is a great asset to have. Now I feel 100% confident with my adapter focus and questions. Thank you Barry for putting the time you did into the booklet.
