An Excellent Article from Canon: 'EOS C300 for Cinematographers'

As I read that article I remember a conversation that happened here on dvxuser shortly after the gh1 dropped. We were all excited and furiously discussing all the different aspects of shooting video with DSLR's (this was before the 7d so at the time it was just the 5dm2, D90 and the gh1) and there was a real need to name these things. Some of us were calling them video DSLR's or vDSLR's but it was Barry Green who coined the term HDSLR and it stuck. Now I see this article and Canon themselves are calling them HDSLR's. Way to go Barry.

Nice overview. Looking forward to using this thing on a production when they are ready. I would never buy one to own but after reading and understanding a bit more about the camera I think this thing is going to be put into huge use at the mid budget level for commercial productions, mainly because of what Canon has done with the 5D and 7D and the familiarity of producers with it.

The C300 is going to rent like crazy. Basically any time a professional production (e.g. Alexa A-cam) is using an HD-SLR now, they'll spec the C300 instead.

You'll also see indie directors renting them. The image is f*cking gorgeous, it sees in the dark (better than anything else), is tiny like an HD-SLR, runs forever on a single battery, has cheap-ass media. I'd see renting two, one with PL (A-cam), one with EF (B-cam + speciality shots). They'll intercut perfectly.

The F3 with a big frankenrig and an outboard recorder is not what directors want to be shlepping around just to get a decent image.

So yeah, maybe it's not a purchase item for most on DVXUser, but who cares? The people that do buy it will pay for it in no time.

I wonder if the 'R' is going to continue to be used with cameras that have no mirror or prism in them. I've been calling them VDSLR but maybe I'll just start calling them VDSL cameras (Just drop the reflex) to really start confusing people! :)

VD's for short

Haha, that makes me laugh, I do this video night where I play music videos at a local club and I call it 'Videodrone' as I always like the name Videodrome from the film of course, but wanted something different. One day I was thinking of how to shorten the name and wrote down VD and was like.....no, that's not a good idea! :)
