An Educational Thread on CF Cards

here is mention of jerky video but it is for the san disk, i guess i will just go with Kingston and hope for same results as everyone else... seems odd to go against canon's recommendations since they wouldn't be making money by recommending a more expensive card (at least as far as i know)...
here is the link about jerky vid:

There was a mention of frame dropping with a SanDisk Extreme IV, which is a 45 MB/s (300x) card. Another guy reported jerky video with a SanDisk UDMA 60 MB/s (400x) card. Don't you think that if it were a really serious and widespread problem, then all of us who don't have such fast and expensive cards would have even worse problems?

so i was going to use the abes of maine promo going on and just get 3, which is probably overkill but makes the most sense money wise... anyway... i am just wondering if anyone has used this promo yet? is it mail in rebate or instant? is it a prepaid gift card that they return to you or is it refunded back onto your card you paid with? i might call them tomorrow but i thought i would ask in case someone has used it:

What is weird is reading all of the problems people are having with their fast cards, yet here i am working with a much slower one with no issues to report.

I'm pretty sure those Sandisk cards that give problems are fake. Bought a Extreme III 30MBs (UDMA version) on Amazon.jp and it works great with both, pictures and video.

OK, here's another (probably stoopid) question: What are the features of a UDMA card that separate it from another? Is it purely speed or is there something else?

mhood- i believe it is just speed... i think anything over the 133x becomes classified as UDMA based on the MB/S rating... i might be way off...

okay i am going to go with two 16gb cards and stick with the suggested 133x cards... i am vouching not to spend the money on san disk, but want to know if you guys would recommend kingston or transcend more? or even adata? are there other brands that i should consider? are there brands to stay away from?

the 7d is at 8MB/s right? so if i am reading the chart below correctly we could actually go with 66x cards (as previously suggested) if we really wanted to save money i suppose... am i right on that?
is the drawback slow offload times?

One thing you do have to be careful about, there are counterfit cards out there. Not that they aren't cards, they are mislabeled as being faster or bigger than they really are.

Here are the speed corelations according to Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CompactFlash#Speed

Rating Speed (MB/s)
32x ................. 4.8
40x ................. 6.0
66x ............... 10.0
100x ............. 15.0
133x ............. 20.0
150x ............. 22.5
200x ............. 30.0
266x ............. 40.0
280x ............. 42.0
300x ............. 45.0
433x ............. 65.0
600x ............. 90.0
666x ........... 100.0

I'd recommend Kingston over Transcend, but only because Kingston has a lower price (thus a better value). A-Data doesn't have near as good a reputation as either of those two brands.

You can get any card reader. There shouldn't be any difference in performance, just build quality.

@jrod81, I never tested the 66x. In theory it should be fine. The one advantage I can see with a 133x is that if the card is fragmented it ought to be able to jump around without data loss. 133x is pretty darn cheap too.

If you test the 66x let us know.
