Re: Americans on the board...

Something I would like to see (Speaking of John Hudsons Amercan Dream) is that every person under the age of 18 get Full Medical. No child should ever be made to suffer because their parents can't afford medical insurance. Yeah yeah, I know - NOT GONNA HAPPEN -

Could happen. In SC community medical has free clinics for anyone under 18, so that is most GP work. Not sure about everything else, but I have never heard of anyone getting turned away for medical care in SC.

Re: Americans on the board...

Yes this I know of. Specifically I meant FULL CARE no matter what the issue is (Cancer, Leukemia, etc). Above and beyond the CLINIC.

Re: Americans on the board...

Well, one thing's for certain . . . insuring the uninsured does not require nationalizing 1/7 of the economy and putting everyone under the same plan.

Re: Americans on the board...

Wow, this thread just keeps going and going and going and....

I do have a questions, how is "stop-loss" not a defacto draft? Here's why ask, when I was a young pup I had to sign up for selective service because I needed the finanical aid to go to college, but pretty much bet that there would be no draft. in the end there was no draft. So in the case of the current situation, the current soldiers are being forced to continue their service whether they want to or not, so isn't that eqivaliant to a draft? I know they signed some form of contract that said if needed there service could be extended. Sounds similar that I could have been called into service through selective service. How is this not a draft from the a group of people who just happen to already be service?

I do worry about the effect "stop loss" will have on the military. Will the experienced guys re-up? Ranger, chime in here because I want to know. Also, I do worry that National Guard is going to take a hit.

I did want add one more thing, cursing is fun. There seems to be some discussion of censorship here and I wanted to add that point, but I want to add that you have to save up your curse words. They are fun and powerful when used selectively. We seem to have people who just throw them out indescrimently. I was on a plane next to two rocker who must have used the f-word in every third sentence. I'm not kidding. I should have said something but didn't. I wasn't morally offended, I just hated that they were over using my power words and stealing their power in doing so.

Take care all.

Re: Americans on the board...

Scott,

All full-timers who leave the military as volunteers go into individual reserves, and are liable for call-up for a certian amount of time (two years I think) outside of the draft. The draft is, by definition, a requirement that civilians serve military time as soldiers or auxillaries. When a soldier volunteers, right on their contract, it explains in painful detail that they are liable for recall from civilian life under the individual ready reserve program. A "stop loss" merely activates the IRR responsibilities of the volunteer before they muster out, retaining continuity of service in their active position.

Since a volunteer has the issue of IRR explained to them in exhausting detail before they sign on the dotted line, and if they read their contract it is equally clear that IRR applies to them, most of the military people I know around here (and this is a major training center) think those that are complaining are idiots. As my friend put it, "you buy the car and take out a loan for 12 thousand, then get huffy when you discover that you also owe interest."

Didn't Coleman Young say that?

Re: Americans on the board...

The problem with curse words in a forum is they break down intelligent conversation.  For example:

Poster One: I think that you are wrong because of reasons A, B, C, D.

Poster Two: **** you asswipe, I rule, you suck.

At this point, what does poster one say?  I generally call the person a moron and move on.  It is not the curse word that is the issue, but the fact that it has been used to end all chance of adult conversation.  This is what I consider a proper use:

Poster One: I think you are wrong because of reasons A, B, C, D.

Poster Two: Reason A is not a good reason because of counter reason W.  And you would have to be a ****ing idiot to really believe reason B, because of counter reason X!

Here, although it comes close to a direct insult, at least the insult is not directed at ending the intelligent conversation.

So the issue is not curse words, per se, but the use of "fighting words" to choke out conversations.  Children, when faced with adult reasons for something, will often respond with profanity.  They have no intellectual argument and hope to change the playing field from intellectual discussion to the child's field of calling everyone an asshat.

Re: Americans on the board...

I find profanity in portuguese a nice release. Plus, my students cannot understand it, so Professor Jackson has a rather saintly reputation.

Re: Americans on the board...

First the fun stuff, my high school english teacher said those who resort to profanity are those have run out of ideas. It was an alternative version of the violence saying. My favorite non-curse curse is "consume feces and discorporate." My favorite TV non-cursing cursing was on the X-Files with "There's you bleeping alien." with the character actually saying bleeping instead of the curse word.

Ok to "stop-loss", from what I've heard soldiers who were ready to "muster out" or retire were being prevented from doing so. Is this true or possible? If it's true then isn't that a form of draft, using existing soldiers? I figured there was some form of contract that said you could be called into active duty.

Thanks,

Scott
