Americans on the board...

Re: Americans on the board...

I appreciate the point -- I do. You argue it well and I could be persuaded.

However, the Senate was not popularly elected until after 1913 -- Senators (as I'm sure you know) were appointed by state legislatures. (Personally, I think it was a mistake to change it.)
Like I said I'm not going to get into a political debate with a bunch of simple minded over zealous flagwavers. Like I said I love my fellow American and I love the land, but my government is one of the most corrupt governments in the world. Oh, and for the brainiac who says "well then move to another country huh huh huh", this is my land too because I was born here and I don't have to like the government. I'd rather try to make a difference than just give up and leave. I'll leave you patriots with another couple of quotes:

"Patriotism is the rast refuge of a scoundrel. He is the man who talks the loudest" - Mark Twain

"The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice--and always has been." - Mark Twain

"Nationalism is an infantile disease.  It is the measles of mankind." - Albert Einstein
Tony, just a hint.

In this industry, you want to not call your fellow professionals "simple minded over zealous flagwavers". At least not without 27 smileys. People remember that shite. No one here posts endless flag waving crap, most were merely celebrating their country on its day of birth, which even my wife does for Brazil, all dressed in yellow and green and singing hard to pronounce patriotic songs.

I know you think the anonimity of the net protects you from saying, "that kid is a dork, why should I hire him," but don't count on it. And you wont be hired for not liking patriotism, but for how you get along with people in what is basically a nonpolitical forum.

Particularly when there can't be that many 25 year-old video wannabes from Springfield, Ohio named "Tony H." ::)

Oh, I agree, but those state legislatures were popularly elected themselves. There was, in the chain of things, a popular vote in the process of getting to the senate.

(By the way, seeing TonyH, I just wanted to assure you this is a friendly and adult debate. It would not be the first time I was wrong, I have been wrong at least twice in my life).

The Lords, before the 1999 reforms, had no way of increasing their numbers by vote (exception, I think Irish lords were voted into the lords for a while), or of changing their numbers, or expelling a member by popular demand. Kill twenty kids with a Bren and go to jail, and they send your ballots for the Lords sessions to your cell, since you are still Lord Mortimer and will be until you die, wence you son becomes Lord Motimer, no matter what the people around you care about.

Absolutely -- it's rare I can find someone who can discuss this stuff in such detail.

Anyway -- your original point that the United States is the oldest continuous democracy (in that catch-all sense of the word) is almost certainly correct.  I was being more of a devil's advocate than anything else.  Don't want to be too much of a simple-minded overzealous flag waver, of course!   ;D

Would you prefer apathy?  Your're the kind of person who would not FIGHT for AMERICAS Freedom and that is disturbing.  DO you have the right to your opinion?  OF course.  BUt you also are not the kind of would fight for this right.  Ironic huh.
America hasn't had to truely fight for it's freedom since the revolutionary war. Every other time it was for imperialistic reasons. I don't need a government to be free, I'd be more free without one.

However, if another country (yeah right, like who?) was actually trying to enslave my fellow americans and make us less free than we are now, I'd get my gun and fight faster than the rest of you.

WOW!  Do the (uninformed) insults never stop?

Not that I'd bother mentioning the War of 1812, the Civil War, WWII . . .

TonyH:

Define imperialism. Discuss how WW1, WW2, Korea, and Vietnam apply to your definition of imperialism.

Who was trying to take away OUR freedom in those wars? Unless you're talking about your right to have slaves, lol!

Re: Americans on the board...

Well, not that you've demonstrated a basis for knowing this, but Great Britain invaded in 1812 with every intent of keeping what it managed to take.

The Civil War was about maintaining the cohesion of the Union and morphed into freedom for millions of souls held in bondage.

Japan and Germany both had plans on the board for invading the US and dividing the continent somewhere around Chicago.

Hey, not to mention the Cold War.

Slapdragon, I'm not going to pretend to be a history guru, but if I wanted to I could find out the REAL reasons for US involvement in those wars. The United States doesn't do anything that doens't serve it's own interests.

I really don't have time to do that right now, I've got stuff to do. However, if you'd like to explain to me how the United States was defending it's freedom in those wars be my guest. 8)

So, no one hires you at all? Your business model is to flush your reputation straight down the toilet? I still recommend maybe $100,000 in business a year. As people on this forum can already atest, I do it based on people's public persona and based on my experience with them, and I have already had occasion to contact and start steering minor business around. Myself, I need to get my students internships and jobs, and need to get my home institution professional exposure (so people say, gee, that is where Slapdragon teaches, it must be cool). In other words, networking, or simply the polite, civilized exchange of information, ideas, and even job tips.

So, if I have shooting to do in Ohio, and weirder things have happened, do you turn down my $35,000 contract because I am a "right wing kook?" (I am a Republican that voted for Gore and does not like Bush, unfortunately I think Michael Moore stinks so I cannot join the Democratic party). I can say that you might loose the $35,000 contract based on your ability to deal with people in a civilized forum (if you act like this on the Super Power Rangers video game forum I could care less, that is not a professional forum). When otherwise, outside of this thread, you seem intelligence and knowledgeable.

The person who proposes a thesis must support that thesis with evidence. It goes like this. Since I am merely trying to find out what evidence supports you thesis, I need offer no evidence. If I rest my case, as you learned in rhetoric class in college, I "win" in an objective discussion because you failed to support your concept. If I claim the moon is made of green cheese, and then request you to prove me wrong, then I have "lost." My job is to support the supposition. I ask you to either prove the statement, or at least, take the easier task of disproving the null.

Re: Americans on the board...

Also, you guys should just let it drop. Political discussions are just devisive, especially when I'm involved. I don't watch the history channel a whole lot like you guys do ;), but I know enough to know that any historical event can be spun to make your country look like a hero. Historians pick and choose what they want to tell the story they want to tell. I'm sure you guys have some heroic excuse for every American war and I bet I can find a greedy excuse to match. So, why not just let it drop?

I'm not a history buff, but I'm good at research and if you really want to have a debate I'll do some research later.
